@@BulletProofDiesel I had a very nasty coolant leak through the exhaust (BMW 320 CD e46 from 2004). After I went to the mechanic (which told me that i must change the head gasket) I looked for help on BMW forums and KZbin. I found you guys, and I thank you very much! Problem SOLVED! The oil breather ok, the head gasket i haven't checked because it would have been too expensive so I changed the EGR COOLER ( the rectangular inox thing beneath the EGR Thermostat) and the Engine THERMOSTAT. Guess what, problem solved, no more white smoke, no more coolant leak! Thank you again, and I hope that this will help other people too. Cheers!

I think this is exactly what's happening on my '20 Duramax. The dealer destroyed my engine and replaced it roughly 30k miles ago, now it's losing coolant and throwing a P20EE code.

I have an early model 04 6.0. >250000 miles Bulletproofed. I had white smoke and coolant leaking from the exhaust. (launched >12' @=>3000 rpm) I used an old dgas cap, clear hose/clear bottle for the bubble test. Bubbled fairly vigorously, stopping when I unplugged the egr valve. Did not start again when it was plugged back in, or for the next few minutes. Egr cooler failure, not head gasket, right? I pulled everything to get the cooler out for replacement and found a dummy cooler. Plugged at both ends. Coolant seems to have flowed through freely, but never exhaust. Egr valve was steam cleaned, with considerable damage to one of the o rings, but otherwise looks surprisingly good. I have broken bolts in the rear end of the exhaust manifold, and visible leaking from the point where the bolt broke on the driver's side. This is my first diesel. Without tearing more apart, how can I locate the leak?

I have a 2004 F350 and here about 4 weeks ago we had the holes broke from the over flow take and after replacing that now we have no power in the truck and its got black slugs coming out with white smoke does this tell me that the EGR cooler is bad and we need to replace it now after the truck over heated do to the holes braking on us?

hi i have a 07 f350 6.0 it started to blow black smoke wile driving on the freeway, than i herd it star clattering, at idle is the worst, i just had the IPR switch replaced 1 week ago, and they did remove the turbo, no engine light came on butt blows a lot of smoke and clatters real good, butt it has full power on the high way, thanks mike

Check your battery voltage and alternator state it could be the ficm going bad or spool valves on the injectors . Or a turbo problem like the vgt solenoid .

If it has a leak, where would the leak be coming from ? Are you referring to the erg housing, egr solenoid, ect. ?

Most of the time, when an egr cooler fails, it will white steam/smoke all of the time. If there is white steam/smoke and you have mysterious coolant loss (no coolant leaking on the ground), then it is most likely a failed egr cooler.

I have a early 04 powerstroke I am getting a p0401 code I can't figure out. I've replace egr and bulletproof cooler done a smoke test no leaks replaced ebp sensor and cleaned tub but it still reads 2 to 3 psi at hot idle map sensor13.5+and climbs with aacceleration baro 13.7 and stays in one place maf sensor 35g/s and climbs with acceleration vgt 72 at idle and clean iat sensors I have kno idea why i can't get this code off i do have a afa intake and siverline 4 .5 inches from cat back. Stock for most part

2003 F-350 6.0L was bare block overhauled, resealed and studded 40,000 miles ago. if there's no white smoke out the exhaust, but do notice besides the loss of water in the degas bottle just after a couple of minutes at start up it starts to push the water out of the degas bottle when I remove the cap, question: can a cracked or failed EGR Cooler also push the exhaust thru the cooler to push water out of the degas bottle ? otherwise..... starting of a blown Cylinder Head Gasket ? I will remove the EGR Valve and inspect in the Intake Manifold next to verify.

It can occur at any time when the engine is running. The white smoke is normally the result of a ruptured EGR cooler.

Hi, if someone can help or suggest me, i have a kia optima 2l turbo gdi and i don't know if it could be a reason but 2 days after i have clean the intake with the crc gdi cleaner, some symptoms have coming, firts i noticed a lot of thick smoke at the coldstart and it stop when the engine come warm. After this check engine is come with code p2297 vacum leak and o2 sensor out of range bank1 sensors 2 (possibly the thick smoke) i have already change the pcv valve. I don't have white smoke out of the tail pipe and i'm not overheating. I'm getting a lot of pressure in the cooling system. Truck runs cold. Has no heat and then after about 5 miles, it finally starts to rise. It sits at 210 for a few seconds, the heat comes on and then up almost to overheat and then back down to about 120. Then I get the "low coolant" warning. Antifreeze is coming out of the reservoir and all over the side of the truck. I've replaced the thermostats. It changed NOTHING. I replaced the radiator cap and it was perfect for about a day and it built pressure worse than before. I'm at a loss... P.S. I originally thought it was the water pump because there was a leak coming from, what I THOUGHT was the weep hole. But it's higher than that.

I was sold a 03 f350 6.0liter by a dealer who had bulletproof on windshield AMD he also said it had been bulletproofed. Since then I'm have a egr recirculation low code come up and cant get it out of it. Plus map sensor code.. But I've not seen no bulletproof parts on this truck. The guy lied big time to sale it

Only to keep the check engine light from staying on. A tuner will not delete the code being stored it will only deactivate the light being linked with the code. The code will always be there. If you say I don't care if the lights on. That's cool, but it will make you blind to any other code that will be problematic to your engine that may need attention immediately or failure can occur. With the light always being on you'll always assume its just the delete. I'd suggest checking codes every week. If delete is what your insistent upon I heavily suggest you have a dealer level scan tool bypass the check engine light to the EGR valve code set. Take my advice serious. If your engine throws a code and is not seen too. Its possible that you can experience engine failure just from a a simple easy way out.

We have not experienced this type of warning on a 6.0L F-Series truck... that being said, an engine overheating situation can be caused by a failing/failed EGR cooler. If you have coolant loss and it is not leaking on the ground or external of the engine, then the EGR cooler may be the culprit.

If the engine is equipped with an EGR cooler, it could be that, or it might also be a problem with a cylinder head/head gasket.

Smoke like that on start up sounds like bad when. My assumption would be when the motor is shut down coolant is leaking back in threw the exhaust or intake and filling cylinders. If the eye is bad it can so take a set of head gaskets with it . Which is a COMMON misdiagnosis . If the edge is bad replace your oil cooler as well. As it is the most likley reason the get cooler itself failed . Buy a new cooler and install get delete . that's if the head gaskets aren't already mess up . The early years were worse for the gasket issue with the bolts stretching to much to fast . Tuners cause most this problem as well

Nice, so my mechanic told me that my engine siezed ( which he rebuilt 50,000 km earlier) because my egr cooler had a split and leaked coolant into the oil . I'm guessing he is full of crap.

When the EGR cooler fails, it can cause a hydro lock situation and not allow the engine to turn over. Obviously the EGR cooler would need to be replaced, then remove the glow plugs and crank the engine over by hand, this should allow the coolant to exit the cylinder. While it may be possible for coolant to leak by the piston rings - In our experience, an EGR cooler failure doesn't leak coolant into the oil.

Usually not by itself, but the conditions that cause an EGR failure can trigger limp mode; for example, a plugged oil cooler will cause the EGR cooler to rupture but can also lead to an overheat situation.

And yesterday I was on the highway doing 160 km/h and just lost power and went into limo mode since then. When I restart the car again and hit the gas it pulls normal and then just puff limp mode again....
