Slightly unrelated, but this a great reminder of how influential people like George Lucas & Steve Jobs were to the technology behind the entertainment industry. They saw something in teams like Pixar and by giving them a platform to execute their vision, they forever revolutionized the industry. These sorts of stories are always fascinating to me, it's that perfect mix between art and tech coming together to create something extraordinary. That original Pixar team were just cooking!

The most brilliant story beat was them deciding to contrast B + W. It explains the story in a metaphorical sense without even exploring it yet; the juxtaposition of an old west cowpoke and futuristic spaceman.

It's absolutely crazy how much of all 4 sequels took a page from the original Toy Story script that got rejected by Disney. "Going on a road trip and becoming a lost toy in the process", sounds a lot like the plot to TS4. Plus, the other 2 you pointed out.

Coolest thing is that they did in fact create the coolest toy that everyone did want. It wasn't just a generic interpretation of what one concept artist thought could suffice for what a kid would want. The whole world wanted a buzz lightyear.

Hard to believe that Toy Story went through so many revisions. Truly tells how much work, care, and effort goes into these films. Also, thank christ the Black Friday Reel was not the final version of the film, and I will never, EVER, understand what Jeffrey Kaitzeberg was thinking when he try pivoting the film into that direction. Then, again, he allowed Shark Tale to be made, a film that mine as well be Finding Nemos own equivalent to the Black Friday Reel, so, idk.

It's crazy that Pixar on their first film was able to land Tom Hanks during his run of back-to-back Best Actor Oscars, arguably the biggest male T.V. star at the time in Tim Allen, and one of the all-time great comedians in Don Rickles. Pretty astonishing.
@RatzaChewy
@RatzaChewy 3 ай бұрын
It's pretty essential to the film that they did. Even though they toned down how jealous and bitter Woody was after the test reels, Woody in the final film was still a bit of a jerk. It's just that Tom Hanks has such a believable everyman quality to his performance that you completely understand why Woody did what he does. And Tim Allen being pompous but harmlessly deluded only added to that.
@jessekittrell2946
@jessekittrell2946 3 ай бұрын
It was because of the Disney connection. If it was JUST Pixar they don't get those guys. Disney had distrubued The Santa Claus & was in talks to buy ABC (Home Improvement was running on ABC). Pretty sure that's how they got Tim. Hanks had done multiple movies with Disney (Turner & Hooch was Touchstone but they were a part of Disney.... plus Splash). He's obviously a big Disney fan (he played Walt in a movie even).
@Lucifronz
@Lucifronz 2 ай бұрын
@@RatzaChewy He was riding high a little bit on being the favorite toy, so he was very insecure about potentially being replaced since Andy wasn't playing with him. But they toned it down quite a lot to where you can sympathize with him, which was important. He tries to push Buzz behind the cabinet so that Andy won't find him and will pick Woody for the trip, but winds up knocking him out the window, where the rest of the toys somewhat justifiably (but also irritatingly) assume the worst and throw him out too. Thing is, the other toys always kind of got on my nerves, because their blind hate for Woody and lynch-mobbing gets in the way not just in the first movie, but in the third movie, when they should trust him more, they refuse to believe they were going to be put back in the attic for safekeeping and that it was all an accident even though Woody was pretty clear. So they're all pretty flawed personality-wise, Buzz included. It works, though. They're all good movies, even 4, although I do lean on the side of people saying that Woody probably shouldn't have abandoned Bonnie. It's not that they didn't work up to it, but it just seems like something that would crush Andy, to find out that the kid he trusted with his favorite toy just lost him at some carnival and didn't even care.

Bill Murray was also approached for the role of Buzz, but he lost the producer's phone number, which he regrets because he claims he would've accepted the role. It always amazes how masterful at storytelling the people at Pixar are (especially during 1995-2010) including the "plot hole" of Buzz freezing whenever people are around, even though he thinks he's real. Pete Doctor revealed that the screenwriters did try to think of an explanation but they realized that it always stopped the story cold and ultimately wasn't needed.

Even Mike, the Little Tykes brand cassette player with the microphone attached. These were all toys I had as a kid, if not was handed down by my older brother. It still bewilders me that not only did Steve Jobs co-found Pixar, but it also helped get his CEO role back at Apple after being ousted from the company some years prior. Even more surprising / unnerving is that the company was spun off from a small animation team at Lucasfilm. And eventually both would come into the hands of Disney 6 years apart.

The fool & plastic spaceman are my favorites. it has women choir voices singing in the background. They're more serious & heart toning with the film than they used with. Especially plastic spaceman. The fool is semi same til get the end song the last lyric is just "Ow!" somebody got hit. Makes sense, makes up with the movie all the way. I can't deny them for not trying.

Jeffrey Katzenberg sure had a lot of confidence during the 90s, considering he was the man who would eventually think Quibi was a good, profitable idea

Eventually I wanna see you do the infamous Circle 7 Animation version of Toy Story 3 which saw a defective Buzz and countless other Buzz toys being recalled and shipped back to the Taiwanese factory only to find out that the recalled Buzz toys are just being destroyed and replaced with newer ones

13:26 if only Disney used test audiences when they made The Acolyte, or Wish.

I couldn’t believe that The Brave Little Toaster was originally meant to have 3D backgrounds. If only Disney had that chance. I wonder if the execs were eating their words when Toy Story became a hit.

I've been a walking Pixar encyclopaedia since early childhood, but the video still managed to entertain! I'd be much more interested in a TS4 video though, since I know much less about its production.

Thanks for this! I didn't know about Billy Crystal potentially being Buzz. Maybe he could have made it work but he sounds to me like he'd work better as a more down to earth character. I love Tim Allen's voice for Buzz.

Another Fun Fact: Paul Newman and Jim Carrey were the studio’s first choices for the roles of Woody and Buzz, but were deemed "too expensive" for the film’s budget. While I’ll FOREVER associate Woody with Tom Hanks and I’m glad Tim Allen voiced Buzz, I could weirdly see Jim Carrey voicing Buzz Lightyear. Plus I’d love to see how he’d play opposite Hanks as Woody!
