The Famicom actually had a modem that people could use for financial services and several games were planned for it but never materialized. Also, the Atari 2600 had a 3rd party modem that allowed for game downloads and the company behind it eventually became AOL. So there really wasn't online gaming, but there was online capability.

Speaking of Ken’s claim about the PS2 being a PC replacement, that claim was enough to scare Microsoft and immediately announce the Xbox; which at the time, was a small side project by its DirectX graphics API team. So not only was the claim bullshit, it also lead to Microsoft becoming Sony’s biggest rival.

And, in some ways, the N64 is technically the most graphically impressive system at the time since it had things like texture filtering and most importantly 3D correct perspective that the Ps1 and Saturn lacked. The latter allowed things to stay steady, which is why textures in Ps1 games noticeably warped around as you moved the camera.

Also on the dreamcast thing, well it IS a 128bit CPU on the best way possible, the one where you use the 128bit as four packed 32bit numbers being processed 4 times faster than the usual, as in what happens with the SSE/Altivec/etc, so it IS correct to call it a 128bit console. The true stupidity is to measure console power by bits, which is pretty much wrong since the start, if you consider that the PC Engine, an "8bit console" was able to play pretty convincing neo geo ports with the help of a shitton of RAM in a cartridge, and that by the same measure of bits used in the dreamcast, the pentium 4 CPUs that can run freaking Crysis are also 32bits.
@Kona_chibi
@Kona_chibi 4 жыл бұрын
This is what I was thinking. Back then, saying a console was 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit etc. wasn't a claim to it's CPU, but a way for the younger generation to gauge the consoles graphical power. We saw that the PS1 was visually twice as powerful as a Genesis or Super Nintendo, then the N64 was visually twice as powerful as a PS1, and then the Sega Dreamcast was visually twice as powerful as an N64. Saying a console was x-amount of bits was basically marketing spiel for "it has awesome graphics". I remember in college we used to talk about how, since the Sega Dreamcast was 128-bit, so too was the PS2, Gamecube and original Xbox, and that the PS4 and Xbox360 were going to be 256-bit, and then 512-bit and so on, because we didn't see bits as processing power or anything, we saw it as graphical markers, the idea that each new console generation's games would look twice as good as the previous because it's bits were twice as high.

Wait, it doesn't have an actual 32 bit CPU in it anywhere? lol. I mean, dubious claims are dubious - the n64 in practice pretty much never used 64 bit calculations (I mean, why would you, for games?
