It was only a speedboat if they won, if they lost they wheeled out a car or caravan. The show producer made a deal with the supplier that if he could give away 3 boats or more per series they would get the boats at a reduced price from the supplier saving the show money. So to create the illusion that the prize wasn't a speedboat every week they would have a boat and a car/caravan out the back. If they won they wheeled in the boat and if they lost they wheeled in the other prize. They actually admitted to doing this in a documentary.

Thanks for this very funny upload the humour of which will be lost on younger members in the comments. I grew up in the eighties and what's strange watching it now is how normal and working class everybody seems delivery drivers , warehouse managers, taxi drivers, housewives. And just the fact everybody is quite nervous and timid. Contrast that with today when contestants on TV shows act as if they've been on TV all their lives! Full of it. I miss the Britain of those non woke non reality TV days. I'm really nostalgic. In fact I wish I could back!.

Talk about joy immediately extinguished, they fluke a win then immediately the screen went up and they ran over to see their prize and it dawned on them what they had won you can sense them thinking what use is this? Bowen was trying to reassure them by saying its worth a fortune, its worth a fortune. On the secondhand market they would probably have been struggling to have got more than a £1000 for it in todays money.
@eddiepurple Жыл бұрын
I love his "worth a fortune" comment, I heard that whenever someone won a car on Family Fortunes, Les would whisper "DON'T TURN THE KEY!", because after the show they offered the contestants a favourable sale back to the car suppliers, with the car untouched. I wonder if 1982 Central TV had the same deal, or if they just let everyone work it out themselves?
