@@Caspian_77 ur lucky I just happened to be on my phone! Our Giant just turned 2 in September. This dog is like no other dog I’ve ever had! They are extremely dedicated to their owners and must be with them constantly. So if u don’t like a shadow dog they are not for u. Extremely territorial with her property, excellent protector! Cautious of strangers, doesn’t really want attention from them. I feel very safe with her here. She would defend us to the end. Away from home she’s not aggressive at all, just stuck up with people. She loves her kids in her family. Anyone she’s raised with she loves. Very, very active dog, must be exercised . Very stubborn, senses any weakness in u she will challenge for control. Need a firm hand with them but kind. Not a dog for a first time owner. We love her, she can be stubborn and challenging, but we adore her! Don’t regret getting her at all! We get stopped constantly in public about her. They draw a lot of attention, not many out there. Good luck with ur journey if u decide to purchase one. Thank you peace ✌️

And it is true as a puppy they love to pick up anything on the floor...we call our wonderful pup our slipper thief...she just earned her AKC CGC title and she’s only just turned one years old...but still a sock and slipper thief...she’s quick! Doesn’t chew...just steals them and runs into the living room with your slipper, sock, or anything else that might find it’s way onto the floor! Love Skansen Schnauzers...so playful little clowns! All 4 of my Giants had/have natural ears and cropped tails. I've been so thankful and happy the tails were done. What she said about tails sweeping EVERYTHING off of end tables, coffee tables, night stands is a fact. Their butts are close to 30 inches tall. The remaining short, thick tail makes a great handle to grab in an emergency to stop the dog. They are done when the pups are so young their eyes are barely open. The Vet simply pinches between the tiny bones to separate them and the skin is trimmed and sealed with surgical glue. The Vet will explain how at that age the sensation in the tail is so low they barely even move. Do not believe everything activists yell about, they just need a cause to belong to something and if they weren't yelling about cropping a tail they'd be yelling at people trying to stop human abortions.
@mattiaspettersson788
@mattiaspettersson788 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve owned five highly active working giants with natural ears and tails over the years. Tails sweeping stuff off of tables is a very, very small problem. It happens but not very often. This argument is just an excuse for croping tails. If it is such a huge problem owners of all other large breeds with tails would have the same issues but they don’t. Don’t forget that the tail is a very important part of a dogs balance system. Yes, they can compensate for some of the lack of a tail, but not completely. Just as you as a human can compensate for the loss of a finger to a certain degree.
@14goldmedals
@14goldmedals 3 жыл бұрын
Mattias Pettersson I respect your opinion and as a fellow Giant parent, I can tell you that if I believed anything would cause undue pain I wouldn’t let it happen. Watching all my big boys levels of agility never pointed to any balance issues. They live (lived) on an acreage 5 acres big so they have room to really open up the jets! Also in all the videos online I’ve never seen anything detrimental to docking a tail. I think for working dogs it’s an advantage because whatever or whomever they are protecting someone from, the Giants adversary can’t get ahold of the tail.
@hannahm.8288
@hannahm.8288 3 жыл бұрын
Look up “ear hematomas” and “broken tails” if you think cropping ears is purely cosmetic today. This breed is so strong that they can significantly injure themselves with very little effort.
@mattiaspettersson788
@mattiaspettersson788 3 жыл бұрын
@@14goldmedals The pups are forced to compensate for the lack of a tail but it alters their movement patterns and so on. You can't get around the fact that the tail is important both for balance and movement as well as for communication. You can try but anyone with knowledge in the fields of physiology and/or communication will tell you that you're wrong. And for the protection argument: Why do all GSD:s and Malinois working as police dogs have their tails intact? If this was a valid argument in any way those breeds would be docked too and they aren't. These are just arguments that we heard over and over again back in the 90's when we stopped docking tails. Some breeders stopped breeding Giants because of the ban. Good riddance. If the love of the breed isn't deepaer than that the breed is better off without them.
@mattiaspettersson788
@mattiaspettersson788 3 жыл бұрын
@@hannahm.8288 Ear hematomas occur in all breeds with hanging ears. In my five giants cases one of them had one ear hematoma, and she lived and worked hard for 8 years. She also had problems with what we call "water tail". A few times in her life about 2/3 of her tail went limp after swimming (this lady could swim and play in wather for hours if given the chance). A problem that went away after a few days. This happens to all breeds with tails now and then. When it comes to broken tails one of my males had this "problem". He broke it once. His tail was very thin and whip shaped and he came from one of the first litters with natural tails born in Sweden. Thus the breeder had no idea what the tails would look like. After a few generations of breeding this relatively small problem was more or less gone. Back in the early 90's I briefly worked at a animal hospital. We saw cases of ear hematoma a few times (never in Giants) and we saw a few broken tails. The broken tails was almost always seen in short haired hunting breeds like the German breed Vosteh but thanks to good breeding I think that the problem is as good as gone by now. As with all other charachteristics it's a question of breeding the right dogs if you want to fix a problem like broken tails and done right it can be fixed pretty quickly.

Some info for ur wife who probably has some of the same worries about the dog in the house. They are very intelligent and was house broken very quickly. Plus this dog does not shed! A big plus for me! The only thing is to have a small towel around when they eat and drink. I just wipe her beard good and she’s ready to go. They are very loyal and already Guards us and keeps her eye on us, but in very respectful manner! No aggression. She always places herself between us and anyone she doesn’t know. I’m impressed at 17 weeks old. Good luck with ur wife! Lol

bigbro9395 hi ! I get her worries about the destructive thing, but actually since I replied to ur first comment my Giant is now almost 6 months old. We’ve had absolutely zero destructive behavior from her. But we are make sure we always find time for her to exercise and expend extra energy. What u hear about them being high energy is absolutely true, so if someone can’t be around to do this then I definitely wouldn’t get one. We provide a lot of chewy toys and mental stimulation. She’s been an excellent dog. This dog is so protective of my husband and myself it’s unbelievable, but she does it with no aggression and a lot of class! Love this dog! Good luck!!

@@bigbro9395 my giant doesn't chew on anything other than his food / bully sticks. No destructive chewing whatsoever, other than his toys, which he has only really destroyed one out of oh, I'd say ten stuffed animals. You can direct puppy chewing behavior to "their toys" as opposed to household items. It's just training. I'd also add, a tired dog is not a destructive dog, as they don't have pent up nervous energy. You gotta exercise them, they're not a lap dog. They need a physical outlet. I'd recommend a large yard and hour long walks in the evenings, daily at minimum.

In my experience, you can teach a dog a signal and a word or one or the other to jump up - perhaps by tapping your collarbones and saying " hugs" or a silly word like "scritchy•scratchy" or hold your hands out to them - for some loving hugs or pets or a good neck and ear scruffing. That way they learn that they don't get any extra good attention if they try to do it themselves on their own decision and impulse. Don't give in now cuz you'll teach bad habits! Don't reinforce the bad habit if it's their decision only give them love and hugs or scritchy•scratchy if it is your command that they jump up on you. Likewise, the experience I had when my Jack Russell simply would not learn to stop barking I taught her and all of my dog's hush and I knew that and she would do it for a second and then she would turn right around and just bark up a storm at the slightest little thing... so, when I could get her to hush for that second give her a treat that failed also after a few moments. So then, I set it up again to treat her when she was quiet with the command hush and then I encouraged her to bark her fool that off and I gave her treat after treat telling her speak speak and then all of a sudden I threw in a hush and gave her a treat before she would start up again. And it struck her finally. It was like magic!

@adviksandhu1943
@adviksandhu1943 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, my advice to you is maybe try getting a little bit of a lazy breed, for that, look into some mastiff breeds. If you can provide at least 2-4 hours of vigirous exercise then I think your dog will manage in an apartment MAYBE. Remember, Giant Schnauzers can workout and exercise the whole day and need their owners with them to stay as they are prone to separation anxiety. So just make sure your dog is happy, only then they will do what you want them to do and will also live a long and happy life. Also, you cannot solely rely on your dog for protection, I suggest buying a weapon and learning some basic fighting skills to truly ensure your safety. I hope this helps!

This isn't the dog for you. Unless you are very active and run or bike with your dog.. An apartment is too small for this kind of dog.

I sit around all day reading as I’m an investor and my giant is with me all day .. we go and run 5-10k every two days or so and she is happy, smart, obedient, sociable, very vocal when barking .. like people asking silly things … she wantS to chop their heads, I keep her on a leash and read her intentions when I’m outside as she chases cats and small dogs to kill but yeah … it’s the perfect dog and as the lady says it’s all true, no health problems at all

They are cropped for cosmetical reasons. Once upon a time they started cropping them on the Standard Schnauzers because the rats that the dogs were hunting bit them with infected wounds as a result. At least this is what has been said. Now cropping is just a (dumb) tradition. It’s a messy process with high risks of infection. A friend of mine worked at a kennel in Spain 10-20 years ago. After seeing the process up close she stopped buying dogs with cropped ears.

Look up “ear hematomas” and “broken tails” if you think cropping ears is purely cosmetic today. This breed is so strong that they can significantly injure themselves with very little effort.

It's banned in most civilised countries. Most of mainland Europe, the UK and Ireland. Defenders come up with flimsy arguments but they do it because they think it looks cool. It actually gives pedigree dog breeders a bad name.

I wished it was illegal in the US as well to crop tails and ears. A schnauzer is born beautiful, no need to modify it.
