I noticed at 12:42 that Chase’s hands naturally bounce at the moment he pulls in to his thighs. Made me realise a good transition from pulling IN to pushing OUT isn’t about a mechanical, overly thought “Pull, THEN Push”, it’s about a vigorous pull that organically bounces off the thighs, fully transferring its momentum into the push without interruption. Thanks for the great video!

Great vid guys! For me the biggest mistake is listening to the people who say that if you learn how to lift front and rear wheels separately then it is only thing you have to do is to link them together in rapid succession. Maybe it feels like it for the people knowing how to bunnyhop but it is wrong in my opinion. I am mountainbiker for 25 years and I can lift both wheels quite high (no clips) if necessary on technical trails but I could not bunnyhop at all. Then I came across nice bikepark with excellent tabletop jumps for beginners, really nice, low speed, low risk ones but with relatively steep lips. This is where I've learned completely new to me attitude to the bike, to bring the bars towards me, to pop from the lip, then to push bars forward to land nicely. And then I've noticed that I can replicate that on the flat as well in a form of a bunnyhop. I still suck at them but I think the drills with a broom that you guys show may help!
@JoyOfBike9 ай бұрын
That's rad it was such a natural progression for you!! Bike parks, skateparks, & pump tracks are the best teachers in my opinion - the skills you learn there easily apply to the trail. Report back after some practice, would love to hear if it helps! Happy hopping amigo.
@MrWhynotnow9 ай бұрын
I'm right there with you piast. Same scenario. Adding this skill to the arsenal seems like a great way to improve overall trail riding, and adding to the confidence clearing jumps and tables in parks. Putting this new attitude as you say to work is exciting. Like you, I still suck but this video gives me great confidence I can master the hop.
@chasewillie.18 ай бұрын
For sure! That's the thing-it's totally possible to get into the air by pulling both wheels off the ground at the same time, even on flats. But it sounds like you've noticed that it allows for so much more control when applying this skill to obstacles like jumps if you are doing it appropriately. Glad it was able to click for you! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Thanks guys - it was really doing my head in why I couldn't get the bars to come in to my waist and it was because I was leaning back to initiate the hop. I'd seen other people's instructions that showed them pulling the bars in to their hips (and watched people that were good at bunny hops do it too) but I couldn't figure out how to do it myself. Your off the bike exercise was a light bulb moment .. the dragging the bars up and into to your waist\hips as you launch yourself vertically upwards is totally natural when you do it off the bike. So what I need to do on the bike all makes sense now.

Very helpful, thank you. This will help my form and consistency. Flat ground seems fine but whenever I try curbs and small objects I’m scared to case the back wheel. I need to get more consistent and not have tunnel vision on the obstacle. Prolly need to go back to fundamentals

you guys are awesome! I'm a skater who never quite became a bmxer but always preferred bmx as my bike of choice because of how compact and agile they are. I could always do manuals a bit and my hops were decent and loved to boost them off stuff like speed bumps and the little curved corners of drive ways and side walks. Just got back into bmx and felt a little rusty but your tips were great! especially the plyametric jumps. it's almost the same jump I've used to teach new skaters how to ollie. similar physics, except using your front foot to level the board instead of the arms with the bike. anyways this video was super helpful. Keep rolling guys! 👍😎👍🚲

I have seen SOOOOO many youtube tutorials telling to do the same technique as manual and yet i can never do a perfect bunny hop with those technique and actually loses my balance doing that and never in control of my bike as i am leaning to far back. Glad you mentioned that mistake at the beginning. You are the only tutorial to say that. I will incoporate your technique the next time im out to practice ! But is it the same technique with hardtail mtb though?

This was a fantastic video, however I think it was missing something pretty important What is the best technique for your feet during all of this? To scoop with your back foot? Both feet? To just kinda let them go flat and pray?
@JoyOfBike7 ай бұрын
Great observation! We actually intentionally left that out, by way of correct form you shouldn’t really be doing anything with your feet. By executing the plyo jump & putting energy straight down into the bottom bracket / ground, anchoring your hands on the bars & tucking your knees to your chest as you reach the peak of your plyo explosion the pedals should follow your feet. If your feet are popping off it’s indicative of a couple possible things: 1) your feet are too far forward or backward on your pedals, the ball of your foot should be over the spindle of your pedal 2) you’re not hopping from a central position (either too far forward or backward) & not putting energy directly into the ground Scooping is something that’s VERY misleading, your feet naturally tilt if you’re jumping vertically off the ground reference the clip at 4:01, you’ll notice the clip without the bike my feet are in the infamous ‘scooping’ position - but this is a byproduct of correct form, not something I’m intentionally doing off or on the bike. I hope that makes sense? Hope this helps! Thanks for tuning in amigo 🫶🏻 -Mike

When u pull the handlebars toward your thighs are your heels down or toes down. My feet sometimes don’t want to stay on the pedals
@JoyOfBike9 ай бұрын
My feet stay relatively flat or toes slightly pointed to the ground - pause around the 4:03 mark. Practicing the plyo jump will really help you not think too much about your feet rather pushing STRAIGHT down into the ground. If I had to guess, your feet may be coming off if you're not applying force directly downward on the jump portion, which direction do they tend to fall off?
@ylana44449 ай бұрын

@JoyOfBike7 ай бұрын
Make sure you're putting power directly into the ground, if you're too forward or backward your feet will more than likely blow off.

Great tutorial! However I’m still wondering, between the ready-position and the vertical jump, how do I make the front wheel come off the ground? I don’t quite get which motion lifts the front wheel. 🧐
@JoyOfBike6 ай бұрын
Good question; it’s really the explosion upward that does this. Anchor your hands to the bars but don’t pull up & apply the plyo jump - this should result in your front end lifting!

I have a pretty decent hop of around 80cm but a friend who can pop higher seams to snap the rear wheel up so fast... my hop always looks delayed, and the front wheel is always a good 10 to 20 cm higher than the back ( the same thing happens when i hit jumps). Any advice? Great video, by the way, nice and simple.
@JoyOfBike9 ай бұрын
Without seeing it, I'm assuming the timing of bringing your knees to your chest & pushing the bars forward may be just a little early. Try to execute that movement at the peak of your hop, same thing goes for jumping - try to use every bit of the lip, often times we pull off too early. Video yourself & see if your back wheel is making it to the very top of the lip - if not practice trying to use the WHOLE lip, this makes jumping way less work!

@JoyOfBike really good that you take the time to reply... I'll try to change just one variable at a time.

Great tutorial, can be followed 100%, the focus on the rear wheel and on "jumping" are spot on 6:28 - you CAN bunny hop higher then jumping plyometrically for 2 reasons: inflated tire acts as a spring and there is some dynamics from squating down upward bike&rider movement results from Newton's third law that states that for every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction btw bunny hop is based on the same general principle as ski jumping :) "springy" tires inflated to optimal pressure help a lot to increase the height, this pressure is somewhat between 30 and 40 psi depending on rider's weight

Hope all is well… Thanks for always bringing the dope content… never rode bikes before.. bought a free coaster last week of July 24… been trying to dial my bunny hop, drops, fakie, lookouts.. I’ve hit a few skateparks, taken a few falls.. I’ve advanced and I’m also feeling pretty raw… obviously you all been riding for years and it was cool to recently learn how long chase has been doing bmx… so here’s my thing… my bunny hop is ok.. maybe one foot on a good day… I can relatively on/off curbs without to much effort now… once in awhile I’ll pull to hard or my front wheel gets so high, a feeling of weightlessness almost and I barely hop and land directly on my back wheel… I haven’t looped out or anything but this feeling is scary 😢 is this a good or bad thing moving forward. Thanks
@JoyOfBike28 күн бұрын
Dude!! So stoked you're finding the joy; puts a huge smile of my face to hear it. Free coasters are a BLAST, I need to throw mine back on for the winter & play around. The falls are usually an idication of progress, but man they can suck!! Amazing you're starting to progress & can feel that though - it's so addicting. It can end up being a bad thing IF you loop out, however this sounds like an inidcation of the timing being off just a little bit. As your front wheel reaches the peak really focus on that plyometric jump. Push a TON of energy into the ground to take off. High bunny hops are a result of a ton of input engery paired with great timing which is a byproduct of endless practice! In fact sometimes when I'm doing a high bunny hop I still mistime & have jump off the back.

I am pretty sure I have the right theory in head, but have problems making it reality. First of all it scares me out to stand still while pulling handlebars to the belly or waist. Secondly when I try to bend my knees to pull the rear wheel (I surely can do it) it feels I straightening them only to hit the ground whith whell. And thirdly when I don'e bend them well I often land in kinda standing manual which teffifying as well. Whould be nice to get some advices.

If I go for a bigger bunny hop I find if I don't 'scoop' with my toes I lose my front foot and slash up my shin. Other than not wearing shin pads is there something I'm doing wrong?
@JoyOfBike9 ай бұрын
From my experience this can be indicative of two things: 1) not applying force directly into the ground, this usually occurs when you're leaning back as you go into the hop. 2) riding too heavy on your toes, try to focus having the ball of your foot on the concave or spindle) of your pedal as much as possible I'd start here: Practice the plyo jump demonstrated in this video & really focus on taking off and landing on the same mark, essentially straight up & right back down, then apply that same jump while on the bike.

How does pushing the bike forward lift the rear up? I try with my bike and the back wheel just rolls
@JoyOfBike4 ай бұрын
If you're tucking your knees in unison with pushing the bike forward, the bike should follow along with your feet & bring the back tire off the ground.
