Bunny takes a trip to Hampton Court Palace for one of the highlights of the Royal Horticultural Society's show calendar. As well as Live Q&A sessions and writing an article on the show for The Telegraph, Bunny shows us some of her favourite show gardens and explains what she likes about their design.
This is Part 1 of Bunny's two videos on the show gardens at the Hampton Court Palace Festival.

Can we take a moment to appreciate that beautiful bed of flowers right next to the calm pool of water in Samuel Moore’s garden? How lovely.

Loved Samuel's garden, it's a garden I could live in. If you don't have large enough table for six people, elbows are touching each other which is irritating and it's great to have enough space on the table for food and platters. This garden is for using, love it, love it Samuel it was a joy to see.

Great recap. I appreciate hearing your assessment as a designer. Alexandra at The Middle Sized Garden yt channel featured a few of the same entries. It’s so informative to compare and contrast your two different opinions (although largely in agreement), one as a professional the other as an avid and experienced gardener. I had never considered the experience that designers and installers gain from being involved in building these - the shows serve many purposes, not just entertainment for the masses. Thanks! And I look forward to your next installment!

Every garden has its own beauty, so I find it difficult to understand how awards are given out. Thank you for sharing and inspiring us with these new ideas! 🌸❤️🇨🇦

I thoroughly enjoy your thoughts on these creative gardens. It is such an inspiration to see the ideas of the talented designers. For a home gardener we can replicate the ideas on a smaller and less expensive scale. Greetings from Boston. MA. USA. Love your channel!

Thank you for this video. I love that you dwell a little longer on each garden. The TV coverage seems to rush through everything so that you never quite get a feel for the design. I feel like i know the gardens better after watching you. Fantastic insights too.

Thoroughly enjoyed this video. I liked hearing what you thought were the unique and interesting ideas, as well as getting the inside scoop on what it takes to put a garden together for the show. I have to confess, I liked the wacky garden a lot. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Bunny, thanks for these excellent videos and your insight. I'm a Gardener from USA/NY and use Heptacodium m. often when late season color is needed. The white flowers changing to red calyxes are great for late summer into fall. One thing I wanted to note with these trees is that some don't have as good red calyces as others. The one I put in my own garden has great structure, bark, and flowers, but then only about 1/3 - 1/2 of the calyxes are red/visible after that. It improved a bit over about 5 years, but still that tree is not what others are that I've planted. If you can get them late when the calyxes are showing. Or get a cultivar (if they have them?) That claims better red, that maybe worthwhile. Those with good red calyces are so worth it and easy to grow. Enjoy and thanks! Ps. Ilex crenata grows like a weed here... almost annoying, but thankfully some of the newer varieties are able to replace some boxwood that are declining from blight. 😅

I’m very new to Heptocodiums so I’m glad you have flagged that up. Will check out the various cultivars. Ilex crenata grows well in Hokkaido too so it must appreciate the colder winters and hotter summers than you get in uk. Many thanks.🐇

I feel the judges were a bit unfair with the Second one to mark them down on the hedge not being thicker is poor on their decision then to mark him down on the table being to big for the area when he probably was thinking of social distance I just feel they were unfair

@@elsagrace3893 thankyou for you interesting reply but may I just say in some circles ones say feeling!, as to give an opinion or belief is to apply a stronger sense of statement it was in a lighthearted comment. if I care about something then I give my opinions and beliefs as they are part of me not if a hedge is to thin are table to big kind regards

Yes is often the case for show gardens. A real shame. I sometimes think one of the hardest parts of designing a show garden is getting the sponsorship and that takes quite a lot of effort and perseverance. But there is no doubt that if you have a successful garden at Chelsea it really does help your career. 🐇
