Even for people without disabilities, subtitles on in video games are really helpful when you are distracted by something happening on screen or in the background so that you aren't missing any story development.

Or in general if the voices aren't that clear. Or not in your native language. I mostly leave or put subs on in games, since in them the dialogue mixing can be hit or miss. Though for movies and tv shows that are in English i can mostly get by without subs. My native tongue is Finnish but given the level of our education and me being around English media (mostly games) since i was a kid, and there being very few games in Finnish on the PS1 i have a pretty good level of fluency with the language. Summa summarum, subtitles are nice to have, especially in games.
@EnraiChannel

Sometimes the audio mixing is just awful anyway, so subtitles never hurt. This is more prominent in movies, yet there it is always harder to find non-fansubs for your own language if you aren't native English speaker. Games at least have subtitles 90% of the time. I mean, at least English subtitles is a must.

For me, having subtitles helps with words on how they're spelled and pronounced. An example would be like using the word segue (to transition) since it pronounced as seg-way, not say-ge, and many people think its spelled segway like the machine. It helps teach me new words and how to pronounce it as well.

@@ActionGamerAaron First off, it's not irrelevant, it was mentioned IN THIS VERY VIDEO as an accessibility issue, right alongside Puyo Tetris, just a couple sentences apart, with footage shown. Second off, i mean UT3. It's a 2007 game. It was SHIT. And it was not the second or third game. The timeline goes that, original UT (also at various patchlevels known as UT99 or UT Gold), then UT2003 then UT2004 which was basically same thing but fine tuned and expanded with a few modes and is the best thing ever, and then UT3. All prior games are recognisably UT games, you can't be in two minds about them, and UT2004 reaches a remarkable detail level actually, it's quite an accomplishment really, so the argument that all the graphical detail made games hard to read in the video... well i disagree with it on these grounds. UT3 is a slow-walking grey-brown mud simulator. Oooh we have so fancy Enlighten lighting now, well you can't bloody see shit. I was SO BLOODY DISAPPOINTED. If you want a little taste test, try the Unreal Development Kit, a free SDK based on Unreal Engine 3 (first engine Epic released for hobby developers, well before UE4), it's got a part of the game in it.

I can’t express how it feels to finally hear someone else say that they have troubles with certain blues and purples (like the Puyo Puyo example). Growing up, I would always call one color the other, and then someone else would, often in a condescending manner, correct me as if I didn’t know how colors worked. And it always made me apprehensive to say what colors I see. Playing games with deuteranopia hasn’t been too bad for me; most red/green situations I’ve been able to deal with. But it’s the other times, like you mentioned some greens with oranges or blues with purples that have forced me to slow down on some decision making. And there are very few color blind options that I actually like. My favorite being Borderlands 2 where they not only alter the color of the loot to more readable hues, but also display what color the loot is. Anyways, thank you for bringing this topic to light!

@@DerOrk As someone who had anosmia temporarily, as a side effect of a needed medication, partway through their life: the factoid that "smell is 90% of taste" is wrong. Maybe 50%. But it varies with the dish. You can still taste, but it's more muted. I found myself going for sour and spicy food and drink way more, as I wasn't getting the same satisfaction from other foods. But I could still taste them. I'd say, if you're *really* curious, maybe the best way to simulate it is: stop drinking high fructose corn syrup drinks if you're unfortunate enough to be somewhere with that disgusting cow fattener. Wait three days, or a week, or as much longer as you care to. Ideally forever. But anyway! Before you next drink one, eat some dark chocolate, ideally, or something else sweet and rich if you're allergic to chocolate. Pancakes (though in the US, somehow it's okay to sell what's almost entirely corn syrup as "maple syrup" which just boggles the mind in its false advertising - so make sure you're not getting corn syrup there, too). Drink a soda with high fructose corn syrup. Eat that sweet, rich thing again. It'll probably taste pretty bland, in comparison. You can still taste the sweetness, but it's... off. It's lacking. Unsatisfying. That's a lot what it's like.

I think that a lot of developers forget a very important thing about 3d games: they're not actually 3d, they're flat representation of it. You have to develop with this in mind, you have to improve the illusion of 3D rather than thinking that just because the game is 3D that will fix it. Its pretty impossible for a person to blend in to the background in real life, but that can certainly happen in a game if there's not a lot of color and lighting contrast between construction and people. This is why military simulators are usually a nightmare, especially in early 3d technology.

This is the blue+black / white+gold dress all over again. Green? Yellow? It's two sides of the same coin, it depends on how we interpret the colour from context. If I put this into photoshop I know I'd colour pick the palette as shades of yellow, but I also know if my egg yolk was this colour I'd throw it out rather than eat it. The reason for it is that we rarely have desaturated darkened yellow presented as it's a very unnatural and unappealing colour. So you're arguing whether somebody is colour blind simply because of interpretation and linguistics more than anything else. This often happens with yellow where many will argue orange shades are yellow too. Lastly many monitors get colour spaces wrong, I own several and I spend a lot of time on trying to get the colours right for work related reasons. I bought an expensive monitor once where yellows would just not render right, there was so much focus on improving colours that yellows became greenish tinted, because usually green is the spectrum where we need most detail as it's the primary colour in nature and thus we genetically see shades of green better than we do for something like red.

Author and artist, here. I had a friend who was near-monochromatic colorblind (he could see some yellows, but that was about it) and playing board games with him was very interesting because we'd have to use a marker to write symbols on colored game pieces so he could tell them apart. It started shifting how I view color and how it should be used to accommodate people who can't see it, or see a different version than we non-colorblind people do. Now whenever I design things for use in my larger projects - city and country banners for the worlds I build, for instance - I try to keep colorblindness in mind so everything I create can be told apart by shape and brightness. And it's not even difficult to adjust those things. It takes less than a minute to shift each item so it's got the right contrast. It's sad a lot of game developers can't even take that time, and I hope that in the future more people will start keeping colorblindness in mind.

The thing I love about colorblind accessibility is - a more readable screen is _always_ a benefit to a visual medium. In terms of color readability, we are the worst case scenario so we’re the perfect test for your UI. Beyond colorblind _modes,_ they’d do well to design their _entire games_ with readability by default. Personally tho, I prefer navigating a game by its art, so I was really excited to see colorblind modes that change the models directly. I’ve gone my whole life wondering if people can pinpoint the color offset we experience and counteract it, and I’m amazed to see that they’re having some success. I mean sure, it turns my screen purple, but...

I can't remember if the CCs are on by default in that game, but watching the old Yogscast coop letsplay of it i was like "yeah, this gels with the game style a bunch" and then just kinda got used to having subtitles. When I (rarely) play Fortnite I do have deuteranopia on with very mild setting, enough to help me see the colors better but without turning the world into an alien landscape. The adverts are a huge scam. The "colourblind person sees colour for the first time" reaction videos are bullshit. They do not make people who see in black and white see colours that they have never seen before. They're pretty much sunglasses. You know how polarised sunglasses filter out certain frequencies of light? Same deal here. They darken everything apart from the hue that you can't see as well, making that hue relatively brighter. So all they can do is make a hue you can already see a bit brighter. They become more useful the less colourblind you are, and are dependent on lighting conditions etc too.

Worth noting, given how long I've been reading books on game development, that the fact that old shooters had Red team vs Blue team IS in and of itself an accessibility feature, since it's based off the observation that these are the most distinguishable colours for people with the most common type of colour blindness. Accessibility might not have gotten the attention back then that it does now, but that doesn't mean nobody was giving it any thought. I mean have you ever really thought about why it was nearly always Red vs blue, and not say Red vs green, or yellow vs magenta? It was a choice dictated above all else by consideration for colour blind players...

It was hard to describe to management how such a small tweak would make the site better, until two of our operators also reported that they could see the "fault" indicator from the "okay" indicator for the first time too. Personally I can see the frustration that probably caused, but I also kind of understand why they went with the mechanic. They could have worked around it though like Guacamelee did. Granted, I don't know how well it works, but they added a pattern to their color coded splashes, which correspond with the Xbox face buttons, that moved into a specific direction depending on the color.

Back in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow there's a puzzle to open a door about mid-game or so where the player has to flip some levers to all show the same color. A couple of my friends were watching my now-roommate play through the game when he started this puzzle. And ten minutes later, he was still struggling with it, obviously getting frustrated. It was clear that he was missing something in what should have been a fairly simply puzzle. After much trepidation and debating if he should chime in, my then-roommate piped up, "Uh, I think you're supposed to make all the red levers turn green." To which my poor friend turned to look at him, gawked, turned back to the screen, inhaled, and exclaimed, "THEY'RE CHANGING COLORS?!?!" This story became his life's contribution to society. All of my friends and I tell it to everyone we know, even random strangers we may not actually know. People in subway trains. People's parents. I wasn't even there, and I know it like the back of my hand. One of my friends wants to tell it as his speech at his own wedding when he gets married. And now, you can share the story too. Tell your friends. Tell your not-friends. Tell everyone about the man that was colorblind playing a puzzle in Lords of Shadow, and feel content.

My initial idea was to have colour sliders for every colour or colour pallet in the game, but now that you say that people with colour blindness only need small UI and critical colour differences tweaked I can finally rest. Happily knowing that I only need to test my game on my 5 inch black and white TV to test how the colours contrast with eachother and readability, while avoiding colour critical challenges.

I remember when I was younger playing Halo 3 online. A guy asked me what team he was on because he was colorblind. I never realized at that point people that played games and are color blind were at a disadvantage when playing games. It kinda blew my mind tbh.

I think why Tetris is so easy is because unlike Puyo Puyo, color code identification is only useful for seeing your piece lineup at a glance, but all of the pieces function the same way of connecting columns one way or another. And even for colorblindness, the GAME BOY figured out how to identify which bit came from which piece by TEXTURING them differently. Of course, that info is gone in the latest game, but having retro tetronimoes as an option for colorblindness would be one of the easiest QoL improvements ever.
