Vince McMahon, and, the WWF had a HUGE controversy in the 80s for actually encouraging the use of steroids, and, supplying them, and, other drugs, to their wrestlers. So, wanting to distance themselves from that probably has a lot to do with them not mentioning wrestlers that died as a result of substance abuse.

They refused to acknowledge Jeff Hardy's extreme drug use when they decided to fire him. It's a running issue with everyone that has been involved for long periods of time. Kurt got out of drugs because of an experience he had. Went directly to Vince and said 'I have a problem. Send me to rehab yourself so I won't run from it' and Vince obliged. Most of the names on this list likely had issues related to drugs that were or were not ever publicized. Then you get the CTE cases they won't talk about because they can't openly admit fault due to the litigation.

CTE, the short version, is a brain disorder linked to head injuries, caused for example by repeated "chairr shots" to the head.. The WWE usually stays away from ANYTHING to do woth concussions because its probably their greatest criticism from concerned people. This was always going to be a tough but important video. One thing Vince was always good for is if a wrestler asked for help with substance abuse he would pay for them to get help. But you can't help someone who isn't willing to be helped
@AdeptusCaeiusIII Жыл бұрын
Kurt Angle told a story of going into Vince's office and asking him to take him to rehab. Vince not only agreed, but was enthusiastic Kurt felt safe coming to him about it. From Vince himself and the handful that admit to having had drug issues, he has apparently been very happy to hear when someone admits they have a problem and bends over backward to help them. The ones who refuse he won't give the time of day, but coming to him to admit it yourself? He respects that.

One big reason drug overdose deaths aren't mention on WWE TV is bc there was a time in late 90's early 2000's is bc many wrestlers were passing away from overdoses. There are many videos on KZbin that quickly go over the numerous deaths. Many used a rougher style of wrestling which lead to their bodies being in constant pain and a lot got hooked on pain meds. Fortunately WWE has instituted a wellness policy and offer to pay for treatment to former employees going through addiction.

Mable/Viscera/Big Daddy V was one I never understood why WWE didn't acknowledge properly. He was with the company for many years in three different eras, and there was nothing dubious about his death. I feel like they're a bit better about this now though, with the commentators acknowledging it live even in cases it happens too soon close to the show, even for people that never worked with the company. With Shane O'Hare, I feel like there was a mentality at the time that there was no other company than WWE, and that you were too old at your late 30s and 40s. I remember DDP talking about how he accepted less than he was worth and any creative they threw at him when he went to WWE because he felt he didn't have many more years in wrestling, and there was no other place to work, and how he regrets that, and is tough to think that even the mentality and perception around the business can cost someone's life. I really like what you said about how the way they acted with some of these people wasn't fair to them or to people going through the same, in and out of wrestling. Hopefully now, wrestling is at least a little better at shining a light and acknowledging that.
@JordanBDC Жыл бұрын
I think some deaths are just hard for even Vince and the company itself to process that they don't have enough time to make a tribute video or even have the strength to have a ten bell salute, especially when the wrestler is released and their causes of deaths are even more gutwrenching. When it's a bigger star like Eddie, Benoit, Bray or Luke Harper, they kinda have to pay tribute or else that would leave lots of fans and people angry.
@wake-up720o4 Жыл бұрын

Most wrestlers are not prohibited from going to funerals, but some people burn so many bridges that nobody wants to be around them. While I'm a fan of wrestlelamia, they are not covering the full stories of many of them. The "Hush hush" is due to sponsors, and catering to their wants. But the WWE does offer free drug counseling for all current and past workers. CTE is chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or brain damage from tons of concussions, that can affect people's moods, and lead to early dementia.

CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) is a neurodegenerative disease linked to repeated trauma to the head. It is also one reason why WWE left out the chair shots to the head and takes more seriously concussions and other injuries to the head. There was a lawsuit from multiple former WWE wrestler, who tried to sue the company from developing CTE later in life. Also multiple boxers, MMA fighters and American kick-once-run-ball-in-hand, aka NFL players have been known to suffer from it.

Ill admit it I cried when I heard about those deaths has a die hard wrestling fan watching since 3 years old so I grew up with a lot of these wrestlers that died from taking there own lives and other stuff so probably get more sad when a wrestler dies than a NBA player or NFL and other sports cause I've been watching wrestling probably more than any Tv programming so thank you for this video even tho it was sad.
@JordanBDC Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's because in sports like Boxing, NFL, NBA or anything else, people are out there getting injured (mostly concussions and CTE) and almost everyone that dies is because of old age. Kobe's death came out of nowhere and it was sad because he was young and loved by many and his cause of death due to the crash along with the others was traumatizing and hard to process and it still is 'til this day. When a wrestler dies, it always comes out of nowhere, young or old but mostly young and their causes of deaths are always the same which is scary. Wrestling also have more deaths than any other sport and it's not really considered a sport, that's why wrestlers' deaths are sad.

The "Jack Tunny" one surprised me the most... as he was, as stated in the video, and "MAIN authority figure" in the WWF in the 1980s. Chris Canyon wasn't as BIG of a surprise, but it (IIRC) had to do with his sexuality (which makes it even worse, if you think about it). Canyon was a homosexual, and while he was "in the closet" for his career, no doubt that was a factor in him choosing "his own way out" (pardon the expression). As far as we'd come as a society (in the US), that was still somewhat "taboo". Which, IMHO is just plain wrong. As I always tell young people, "Don't be afraid to be WHO YOU ARE!" But sadly, they have reason to be afraid. Too many nutjobs running around that will commit violence against them for being "who they are". But, stay strong.... and be unapologetic about being yourself. You have support, even if you don't know it. 6:50 - Bunny, a LOT of they boys get into drugs because of the pain that performing causes. They look for relief (I know, because I am disabled and rely on pain medications to function at a minimal level)..... and end up getting hooked on it. Some survive, but many don't. It's really sad, because it's really not their fault. Anyone living in constant pain will look for relief from it, especially when their job depends on it. Myself, I'm beyond being employable. But the thing about medication is, after a time, your body becomes used to them, and eventually you literally NEED them to be "normal". I have a good doctor, who regularly monitors what I'm taking, and a wife that keeps me grounded. So I have a good support system. Not everyone has that, and they allow themselves to get "out of control".... and worse, enablers that help speed their way to the grave. I honestly count myself fortunate, in that regard. 9:10 - Also, I have a feeling that MANY of these were because of the "Chris Benoit" situation. Where, they did a "Tribute Show" to honour him... only later to find out the details of his death. To put it in short, Benoit, his wife (Nancy, who was a former WCW manager (and whom I had pictures taken with and autographs of) and their young son were found dead in their home... the details later revealed that Chris had murdered his wife and son, before taking his own life. It was a really messed up situation, and WWE had already run a tribute show for Benoit. Complete with Superstar clips talking him up. When the horror of the event was discovered... WWE quickly retracted that tribute show, and has never aired it since. They won't even acknowledge that it happened. THAT event, I think, really changed how they do tribute shows for deceased wrestlers. There's also the "drug overdose" point to consider, because WWE never wanted to acknowledge the toll wrestlers.... excuse me.... Superstars put their bodies through in the course of performing, that could lead them into addiction. Like I said, living in constant pain can cause someone to go down a bad road. One MUST be cautious and constantly aware of that, lest you fall into the trap. 11:10 - CTE is basically a string of concussions that seriously affect a person's brain, and how it functions. This has become a MAJOR concern with both the WWE and the NFL. Because athletes in both systems often suffer concussions frequently, both have taken the problem MUCH more seriously. Actually, Chris Benoit (who I mentioned above), his autopsy revealed that, at his young age, had the brain of an 80+ year old because of the damage he suffered from. It was likely a contributor to his actions that fateful night. But to be fair, BOTH organizations have taken great steps in either preventing, or at least dealing with concussions in recent years. 13:00 - Okay, back up 10 seconds... but yeah. Bunny, believe in YOURSELF! I had to learn the HARD way to do that. My first wife is the one that gave me the encouragement to leave a "dead-end" job that was mistreating me (and I had only allowed it because I didn't believe in myself).... to find something better. SHE was the catalyst I needed to make that change. And that happens to TOO many young people. I've been there! You CAN find success outside of the limited microcosm you have been trapped in. My first wife (who died of cancer in 2006) was instrumental in my finding the RIGHT job for me. She encouraged me to write a book, and to never be ashamed of who I am. THAT is the message I try to pass on to others. I learned it in my 30s... and want to help people in their 20s to realize that same thing. Don't believe the "haters"... believe in YOURSELF! You CAN do it! You CAN be a success, but you have to believe in YOU. Period.

Overdose, heart issues, suicide and injuries have always been the four main causes of deaths of young wrestlers. Overdose is rare now and to make you feel better, there are some men and women in their 40s to 60s-70s who are able to live long and are still alive today. Being a wrestler is like being a pirate, you travel in the seas (on the road or in a plane) doing what you love (wrestling and making money) with your crew (your friends and co-workers) on the ship (in the ring) until that cannon hits you (death) unless you are able to dodge it.

WWE has had issues acknowledging drug related deaths since the early 90s when Vince was indicted in federal US court for supplying steroids, but the biggest tipping point for not wanting to acknowledge drug related deaths was the death of Eddie Gurrero and subsequent testing policy (and all the PR they put into it) that followed. They're happy to parade out their success stories, but the failures get swept under the rug in hopes nobody notices.

12:38 What you have understand is it is VERY hard in the wrestling industry to make a good name for yourself if you are not already a established name, or in one of the few major promotions, or have a lot of years of experience. Of course these wrestlers already know they have to go out and continue finding work and proving they are great. That is what they do. However, the goal ultimately for most North American wrestlers is to one way or another get to WWE or get back to WWE in the case of those who were let go and be a success. So if the wrestlers working on the indies are taking forever to find success, it can be stressful and they might feel they don’t have options. In Sean O’Haire’s case, he had already given up wrestling but the depression was definitely connected to his career being cut short early after WWE release.

WWE lifestyle is hard, WWF was even more so, taxing on both the body and the mind. Training the moves, having the matches on TV, working the countless houseshows, being at fan conventions or backstage events, big PR tours, recovering from soreness and injuries, trying to stay in shape all while being on the road or in hotels away from home sometimes 300+ days a year. Many wrestlers abuse substances to manage that lifestyle long term. Pain killers to deal with the pain, uppers to drive through the night despite being sleep deprived to make it to the next show in time, downers to drown out the stress for a while, steroids to stay in ridiculous shape even if there is not always time for proper diet and weight training. Many people don't really seem to know what they are getting into when they enter this industry, I lost all my desire to be any kind of wrestler when Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit both passed away within 2 years from wrestling related issues.

I think there's one obvious reason for why Chris Kanyon's death wasn't acknowledged on TV. Kanyon was a first gay wrestler to come out.... and he was punished for that in 2003 by being brutally attacked by The Undertaker who... let's be real, was ruthless with Kanyon. He didn't care a single bit for his well-being... that was very rude. Chris Kanyon was way ahead of his time, his matches were fun to watch as he was from time to time doing some interesting moves that almost nobody used. But his sexuality caused him a career, unfortunately. And for what I understand, WWE has no problems with mentioning the guys who ended their own lives... they even had a tribute for Chris Benoit before they found out what he really did.

How, do you think this? The guy received the royal treatment from every major promotion, from , wrestlers and KZbinrs. They even still have hidden things in wwe to celebrate his time in the company. I don't know what you expect , if you think he wasn't given the respect he deserved.

What do you mean? WWE have him a decent push, he was 3x world champ before his death, almost every feud he had was great. His gimmick was ruined but that didn't really stop him. After his death, WWE gave him (and Terry Funk) a ten bell salute on SmackDown with a whole three minute tribute to him with his rocking chair sitting in the front of the stage. The whole episode was literally about him and Funk more than anything else. Funk's death was heavily overshadowed, that's how much WWE cared about him. And it wasn't even done from there, they continued to pay tribute to him on the Raw after that SmackDown. WWE would upload Bray's moments on KZbin week after week and the money WWE got from his merch sold was given to his family, there's a high chance that the next WWE game would have him on the cover with his own showcase mode. Will he go to the Hall of Fame next year, probably. This is literally more than what WWE did for Eddie.

What do you mean they had a whole tribute show a 30 min vid on KZbin about him millions of videos dedicated to him how is that not enough

This is why WWE is evil, once they are done with you, you are toast. In those times there was no AEW, no real options. Vince doesn't care about his wrestlers, just the money they bring in

Try seeing what happened to their kids of the wrestlers who had saldy passed Also why didn't they pay tribute to them i mean if bad terms then what about the good terms they should've at least included a tribute at the beginning of the show

A few of these were substance abuse related or suicide (that we know of). They wouldn't want people to look up those because it's supposed to be a 'PG show', and those particular cases are far from acceptable. Kind of like the ban on even mentioning Benoit after his death. It sucks, but they would want to prevent any culpability, I'm sure.

There is no excuse. People need to see how horrible his organization treats it's family of performers when they feel they might not be making money off of an individual anymore.

They treat the wrestlers well.. or they wouldn't stay with the company. It's a business, you don't get as big as WWE treating employees like crap.. Yes when you no longer able to bring in money, your gone, but that's how any company works.

WWE not acknowledging drug overdose deaths is largely due to the Chris Benoit situation. WWE had to change a lot after that incident to be trusted by the people watching it.
