FAQ:
Who is this lady?
Gina Petitti was born in 1935 in Faeto, Italy. Her family ran a farm in Italy and she met her husband, Vito, in the same town. In 1970 Gina, Vito, and her 4 children immigrated to America. Gina’s husband passed away in 2012, but she is surrounded by a large family, which includes 9 grandchildren, and lives 5 minutes away from her eldest daughter in New Jersey. Gina spends her time cooking, gardening, and being an active member of her local Church.
Where does Gina get her recipes?
Most of these recipes are from what she learned growing up in Italy, but some of them have evolved over time. She has also learned new recipes from friends and family in America. She is always eager to try new things.
Why is no one helping her in the video?
Grandma Gina doesn’t want help! Usually, it’s because we will slow her down or not do it “her way.” For the videos we only show her, but when the camera cuts we jump in and help form the cookies or prep for the next step.
Why don’t we buy her a new...?
Grandma Gina has a closet and garage full of new gadgets, spoons, forks, pots, etc… but she doesn’t like them because she is used to doing it with her old tools. She has fun getting her hands dirty!
Who is behind the camera?
Her retired son-in-law films, her daughter helps her prep, and she usually has one or two grandkids in the kitchen.
Does Gina read the comments?
We print out and show her how much love she gets from all her viewers, and she is very thankful and hopes you enjoy her cooking! Your comments bring her lots of joy, laughter, and inspiration to make more videos to share with you.
Thank you for watching, we hope you subscribe, and we will see you in our next video!

You have blessed my life so much. I get sad at times because my children who are grown have no time for their mama. I try not to be sad and think of you my friend who's family still loves her and wants time with her. I am so happy that you let me be a small part of your life.God blessed me with a husband that loves me very much. He says he can always tell when you post a new recipe because he says I am happy. I have made every recipe you have made so far. Sometimes I feel just so old but with you I feel like I have a new friend and I pray for you and your family daily. God bless and may your holidays be wonderful filled with family and friends and lots of love.

She's showing us techniques that have existed long before all the slick media shows started featuring them. I'm talking back to 1980's and before (yeah I'm old). My point is that she is showing us traditional cooking methods and procedures in a purer form. Yes, even back then (as now) there are individual differences, but Gina is a resource we should respect and treasure; not just for her food (which alone justifies the presentation) but also for her philosophy of inclusion and sharing. She reminds me of my grandma and my mama who drew the whole neighborhood into our house. In my family home even the mailman helped celebrate my high school graduation when he stopped to deliver the mail, but stayed for prosecco and cake. This is the spirit of Gina and her kitchen.

I love your cooking, you remind me so much of my Grandma Matiana, my grandma didn’t speak very good English either, she spoke Spanish but I remember going to her kitchen and the first thing she would say you want some tortilla with butter and I’d always say yes because there was nothing like her tortillas! My family came from Calabria, Simbario. They were farmers & woodworkers. They came here in 1885 after the civil war. They lived in NY for awhile, but decided to head west as NY was too crowded & expensive. They ended up in Washington State, bought land, built homes & had a farm. I come from humble people, it explains so much. They had no education & even pulled my grandfather out of school in the 6th grade to help the family. They had 13 kids & by the time I was born in the 50’s, they had lost all but 5 of their children & a year after I was born they lost everyone’s favorite my grandfather Joseph. I named my first son after my grandfather, who was named after his father. Everyone is all gone now & none of the kids had big families. They only produced 5 children between them all. My mom is the last of her generation. When she is gone, no more stories. I miss the big Sunday dinners at my great grandparents & I miss all my great Aunts & Uncles. My grandparents were old by their day standards of having children & they only had two & only one had children, my mom. I had no first cousins & since my second cousins were so old, we called them Aunts & Uncles. I was the first in our family to graduate from college & my son was the first to earn his Masters & two Bachelors. My grandmother lived to 85 & I miss her everyday. During its heyday, my Italian Family was large, loud & beautiful, full of warm wonderful people. I had 4 children, three survived & none have procreated! Thank goodness my brothers kids, they have all created new life.

CJ, how wonderful your memory of your family is. I enjoyed reading it and it brought back my own memories. My family was from the north (Treviso) and immigrated to Canada. When I was growing up, my father's family were and still are in Italy. My mother's family were mostly in Canada. I can remember visiting our mother's sisters and brothers and all of their families and having wonderful meals with the required singing afterwards. My father had no family here but made up for it with many friends from the same area he was from and let me tell you, the feasting and singing was something to behold. My parents made it to 4th and 8th grade but all 7 of their children had no choice. My father was insistent that we each had to further our education so we are all university educated. I only wish I had paid more attention to my mother's cooking. So now I watch Gina here (I love this lady) to see if I can replicate some dishes my mother made. I hope you have a great day.

I have to say - I am so happy to see your videos of traditional foods that you grew up with, and thank you for sharing these recipes/methods with us. Not only do you remind me of my grandma, but you cook, speak, and have a certain love of life that I find so endearing. Having grown up in both Hawaii and Los Angeles, I never really understood what my grandma said, as English wasn’t her first language. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve understood that language barriers do not mean anything - it’s about the love and care, and the smile on your face, and it really shows through your cooking. Grazie mille, Nona Gina! (Can I call you Nona? 😺)

Dear Nona Gina, Watching you makes me miss my mother-in-law so much! Our Nona Katherine (Kierra) grew up in Newark's first ward and lived her whole life in Newark and Hackettstown (in the summer). She made the best manicotti ever- they melted in your mouth! My husband is her only child, and we have two daughters. We all miss her. She went home to God in 2010 after 103 ½ years of good life, traveling to Italy many times, and other places, too, after her husband passed in 1978. I wish she were still here, but I know they are eating well in Heaven! Thank you for all the joy you bring me and everyone else with your videos. Our country needs more real food, like you prepare. I just discovered your videos this weekend. Gina, you remind me of my grandmother. We are Irish ☘️ but I think Grandmas are the same the world over. She is no longer with us but she was a great woman for cooking and baking. X

Grandma Gina. You're making me hungry. I loved watching you cooking your courgette soup. (I'm English. That's what we call zucchini.). I was going to cook something else. But you inspired me to make some soup. I liked your singing at the end too. You must live in the kitchen!! KEEP COOKING!!

I made your fried zucchini tonight with a nice zucchini from my garden. I never would have thought to put the egg on after the flour. Soooooo yummy! I’m making the other half of the zucchini tomorrow. I’m glad my husband doesn’t eat zucchini....more for me! Thanks Gramma Gina!

I smile too because Gina reminds me of my aunts who came over from Italy around 1900 and settled in Paterson, NJ where their husbands worked in the silk mills, as did my grandfather too but he married an American and moved to upstate NY. I remember visiting my aunts and how the kitchens were always busy with wonderful meals for all to enjoy, like how Gina prepares for her family. I loved their accents when speaking English and when they could not find the words, ask their children for them. I once asked my grandfather to teach me Italian but he said he forgot how too. It was not until funerals did I hear him speak it. I guess he felt I was better off not knowing. My Italian aunts were hard working individuals but always had the family first and of course all the love that came with it. I'm an old man now but Gina brings me back to those days....and I smile.

You surprised me Grandma Gina! I thought you would use the egg first and then the flour. I see that it is better your way as the flour does not get all sticky. Thank-you for your kindness and for teaching us. I wish that I would have appreciated more the things my Granny could have taught me before she passed.

Good morning Gina, I am getting sooo many Zucchini! I must tell you I am 85 years old and still enjoy cooking for my husband. His Mother used corn meal to fry medallions of zucchini so this is his preference! Most pleasant man! It’s the least I can do, huh? I enjoy you very much. Next I will try your Lasagna!

My Italian grandmother used to make it a little differently. She would make a relatively thick batter with flour and eggs, reggiano parmigiano, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and then dip the zucchini in the batter and fry it. It is one of my favorite foods with a nice steak.

I made your stuffed cabbage yesterday and it was absolutely wonderful!! The best stuffed cabbage ever!! My husband and I like it very much. We are vegan so I used Beyond Beef and Follow Your Heart vegan mozzarella and vegan parmesan and it turned out delicious!! Tonight I am making your fried zucchini using egg substitute to go with lemon soup. Yum!
