'Buran' Soviet spacecraft

"..The only orbital launch of Buran occurred on 15 November 1988 from Baikonur Cosmodrome Site 110/37. It was lifted into orbit unmanned by the specially designed Energia rocket, which to this day remains the heaviest rocket running on liquid fuel. Unlike the NASA Shuttle, which was propelled by a combination of solid boosters and the Shuttle's own liquid-fuel engines fueled from a large fuel tank, the Energia-Buran system used only thrust from the rocket's four RD-170 liquid oxygen/kerosene engines developed by Valentin Glushko and another four RD-0120 liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen engines. From the very beginning Buran was intended to be used in both fully automatic and manual mode..."

- the automatic landing of Buran from orbit onto airdrome;
- the absence ot the main rocket engine on the orbital aeroplane. The main engine was placed onto a central block of a carrier-rocket ENERGIA which is able to launch into an orbit 120 tonns of payload against 30 tonns for Space Shuttle;
- the hight lift-drag ratio of the space aeroplane Buran is 6.5 against 5.5 for Space Shuttle;
- the space aeroplane Buran returned 20 tonns of payloads against 15 tonns for Space Shuttle orbiter from an orbit to an aerodrome;
- the cutting lay-out pattern of thermoprotection tiles of Buran is optimal and longitudinal slits of tile belts are orthogonal to the flow line. Sharp angles of tiles are absent. The tile belts of the Buran fuselage and fin have an optimal position..."

I had read that the Soviet shuttle had a couple of jet engines so that it could do a fly around in case it missed it's landing, but to see it take off under its own power is super impressive. I mean, ... wow. Just wow. Amazing. I'm sorry the program was cancelled. If Russia ever goes back to space I hope they revive their shuttle program and improve on its design. Seeing it take off, not launch strapped to a rocket, but lift off on its own ... that's really something. It truly is. Incredible stuff. Absolutely incredible.

It didn't have the engines in the end. At the beginning of the program they wanted to include them, but they soon realized they would cause a lot of problems when re-entering the atmosphere from space, they were impossible to protect. So in the end they scrapped them from the final product (the one that you see taking off by itself it's a prototype) due to excessive complexity. The only Buran that was launched in orbit in 1988 was essentially a glider.

I'd say that the Buran had some features that the US shuttle didn't have and it's a shame that the Soviet Union didn't move forward with this program. At one time the Soviet Union had the most comprehensive space program on Earth. Not the best or sophisticated, just comprehensive. It is quite obvious that the Buran was a direct copy of the US space shuttle in very many features. As far as safety goes, the US shuttle had an impressive record in every respect including safety. The same cannot be said for the Soviet manned space program however. QED

Records of the shuttle - 1) It was the first shuttle. 2) It was a lot of starts. 3) It was cheaper in the output to the orbit (amongst shuttles). Buran had a large payload and it was more energy-intensive in maneuvers on orbit and in atmosphere. More crew. The possibility of unmanned flight. Crew rescue system. There is nothing surprising - Russian military knew the technical possibilities of the shuttle. And they ordered more advanced machine. True, they did not quite understand why they need it. - "Americans have shuttle ... so, we need the same ... and even better!")))

amazing, for sure taking cues from the American shuttle but improved on. And also least not forget made on the fraction of a budget the USA had. The rd180 engines were bought by the USA to power their titan V's. Alas made for a threat that never was. The American shuttle was too big because the DoD insisted it be able to take one of their large cargo's. The Russians in copying that, made Buran more expensive than it needed to be.

You're wrong, the "Buran" in addition to the appearance has nothing in common with the American spacecraft. The laws of physics are common to all, but the concepts are different. No one copied anything, and the idea of reusable spacecraft in the USSR was announced earlier than in the United States. As well as in General space flights and rocket science. The USSR was a pioneer in Space and in many industries. Many simply underestimate the power of the Soviet Union, which was one against the entire capitalist world and then lost only thanks to the betrayal of the top of the country. And the USSR collapsed from within. The Communist model of society is much more progressive than capitalist and HUMANE. All that now have trade unions and citizens around the world, the first were announced and implemented in the USSR.

This is an analogue of the Buran spacecraft (Orbital ship for horizontal flight tests). This ship is now in Germany (Technik Museum Speyer).

It isn't Buran, it is BTS-002 (OK-GLI). You can see 2 atmospheric engines to the sides, for normal atmospheric flight, with afterburners and no real thermal tile coverage on the nose. I think 2 Lyulka AL-21 engines.
