Man I know this is 6 years old and you will probably never see this comment but thx 🙏🏻 my friend I’ve scoured the internet KZbin and just found this video and when I heard that noise coming from your truck I almost shouted! Right now it’s 1:24am in Tennessee that means I was about 6 hours away from replacing my transfer case well I guess I don’t need to tell you the hell this noise can put you through thank you man for taking a minute to pass on that information God bless you friend!

On the silverados when you hear the noises most of the time its the rear differental when it spins. If its not your emergency break parts ,please dont go buying a drive shaft or u-joints first. Open up the rear differental cover and make sure you got abowl for the fluid. Look at your magnet that cathes metal flakes and look at the spider gear if its ate up replace them. Dont let any mechanics steal your bread that your family needs. God bless

Nice vid! One of my favorite fix-it stories - some friends of mine bought a brand new Silverado. Every time they accellerated from stop, it clunked. they brought it back to the dealer a couple times and they said "it's the driveline taking up slack - these trucks do that". After a couple months, they brought it to Jiffy Lube and this high school kid said, "your truck is done - and, oh yea by the way I noticed there were no bolts in the transmission/transfer case crossmember. I put some in for ya". Ha ha! clunk was gone...

So, just like many folks on here, I have had the grinding noise happening for a week or so. I have 210K on my truck, so I went ahead and replaced the following: upper A-arms with ball joints, lower ball joints, pitman arm, idler arm, tie rods, sway bar links, rotors, pads, new hub bearings, and CV shafts. Still had the noise. I didn't know where to go from there. I thought it might be my abs module, but then I stumbled onto this video. I took the back wheels off and the calipers. The rear pads and rotors looked good, but the parking brakes were bad and very loose on both sides. I pulled those off, put it back together, and took it for a test drive. The noise was gone. I will replace the parking brake assemblies in the next few days. Thanks for posting this video, it is a life saver. I was gonna do the front end work anyway, so I didn't mind spending the money, but for someone who is not able to do that at the moment, this is a very inexpensive thing to try before you start chasing a ghost.

I have a truck that had this same issue with the e brake. Finally I found it myself after new hub assemblies, and cv axles. It's a noise that's really hard to pinpoint. Glad you got it figured out. After four vehicles of the same basic type I've decided to stick with them, since I know most of their quarks.

It was a light rattle indicating smaller parts, those other mechanics were D-heads, all those other parts they replaced would have made more of a clunking noise. What a sad state of affairs when professionals stuff it to somebody. Thanks for your time making this video, this is why I do all my own work, I may miss on a few but it's just parts cost I eat and not the huge labor costs.

I have been through this kind of situation so many times. My attitude now is to buy a basic vehicle with nothing on it --- manual transmission, no air conditioning, roll up windows -- etc. The problem with "options" is that they fall apart one day after the warranty expires. Of course you might have to go the used route to do this. I am a veteran and the Army Jeep is my kind of vehicle.

I have had everyone I know look at the truck to see if they could help me and no one could figure it out. I think I heard this noise today. I heard a different noise the other day and I'm pretty sure its the starter but it went away the next time I drove it. I picked up a starter today thinking this noise might be related but now I'm not so sure. The noise I heard today only lasted a few seconds and sounded like a harley next to me. I'm changing the starter today because of the first noise and if I hear this noise again I will now know to loom at the e-brake. People like you have made my life so much easier so thank you so much. Ive had so many different noises from a piece of metal in the bed holes where you hook your straps, to the carrier bearing, to u-joints, to the exhaust hanger, and now starter and probably the e-brake. Lol
@danwayne7863 жыл бұрын
Quite enlightening video. Always good to have a vehicle, visually inspected , road tested and ramp tested. I suspected I have a differential noise and yet 4 mechanics have said it is the wheel bearings. Only two have said it is the differential causing a grinding noise. I'm still having more opinions before making a decision.

I just picked up my 2009 Silverado from the dealership and it’s still making this exact same noise! I got the same answer, exhaust hangers and ball joints. It clunks over bumps and makes a horrible grinding sound (intermittently) but the differential and transfer case fluids look normal. Thank you for posting this!

Thank you so much for this video! My 2001 GMC Sierra was making the exact same sound and I was at my wit’s end trying to find where it was coming from. Took it to a mechanic and showed him a video I had taken with the noise and explained your situation with the e-brake. He said he pulled the back left wheel off and stuff started falling out! The e-brake doesn’t work but the noise is gone. He didn’t even charge me. Said if I wanted the e-brake fixed I’d need to go to a scrap yard and find a rear axel because the rust damage was so extensive, but if I didn’t care about it (I never used the e-brake anyway except while changing a tire and I always chalk the wheels when I do that anyway because I never trusted the e-brake in the first place) everything should be fine the way it is now.

The Burb Billy, brother ya just saved my @$$! I was headed home yesterday and the grinding started. Drove around forever with the higher pitched tinging sound due to being told repeatedly it was shock housing and needed new shocks. Well sure enough took of the driver’s side rear wheel (parking brake is located) and brake caliper. As soon as I pulled the rotor off the parking brake shoe ring and slack adjuster feel out with it with needle bearing and the sprocket gear for the parking brake slack adjuster all feel out. Removed the rest of the chewed up metal brake pieces and the rest of the parking brake assembly inside the rotor. Put the wheel back on and took it for a test drive. Immediately the nose was gone. No more grinding and the high pitched tinging from the brake shoe ring assembly is gone. Never heard this truck sound so good. I too am a contractor and this happening just weeks from Christmas I thought I was toast and possibly the worst dad ever lol. Thanks again. Your post alone saved my families Christmas.

and you would know would you ?? you are a mechanic ??, to be quite honest here the term now is automotive technician from all the diagnostics that a lot of us suffer through which we get paid little for. there is that much technology now that a lot of mechanics as you call them do not know everything and i would love to know the one true GOD mechanic that does i have been doing it for 25 years and i know a lot however each day i am still learning as it is that intense of a trade. so if auto-technicians are getting it wrong gaurantee if you dont tell them they are wrong they wont change however we all make errors of judgement, i recently told an owner of a buisness i rang him up after he diagnosed a car with a faulty head gasket on a car he told my customer now $4,000 to replace engine, i told him he was wrong and it was simply a coil pack , no sign of a head gasket failure at all, he did not like being told he was wrong as he was obvious some multi-millionare big franchise owner who thought he was the TOP dog,i have since replaced coil pack at a cost of $68 AUSTRALIAN i run a humble mobile automotive buisness myself and i have out-stripped a lot of these brand name people to shreds on diagnostics, i actually put the time in and fully research un-paid on problems i come across, and i really hope one day that my self learning pays off, not wealthy from doing it thats for sure, the more research you do the better, a lot of automotive work where people come unstuck is they start over complicating the thinking of it when it is usually the simple answer that is the correct one most glitzy workshops fall down on this though they work for money not problem solving and it is the same in every proffesion out there they work for money not because they should be applying their skills because that is what they do

bser3973 newer vehicles hav newer issues that mechanics miss. I got a volvo for almost nothing bc no one could fix it. Took me 2 months to nail it.....wrong remote receiver. I'm still keep my old stuff.....less electronics to troubleshoot.
@mookie02716 жыл бұрын
while there is some truth to what you are saying I as a "mechanic" are no longer called mechanics but automotive technicians, and there are switched on Automotive technicians , called that because of the diagnostics we have to do, a lot of the time i am bogged down with research looking to fix problems and give solutions to people, unfortunatley people dont listen to mechanics they could not give a fuck about what i have to say , because $$$$ signs get in the way of people thinking clearly about safety etc... cars require loads and loads of work you can not just get in a car and drive without working hard continuosly on the car you have to have it running properly, you are wrong about "mechanics" not knowing what they are doing, if you give them patience time to bring solutions to you they will and treat them with the respect they deserve, i stuggle with making money as a mechanic, however it is bizzare seeing as we keep society in the modern era going, yet we are all largely underpaid, considering police, amnbulance fire departments, food transporters all grinds to a halt and society goes bakwards, so give it a rest , so sick of you people bagging "mechanics "

It’s not hard. People tend to find a shade tree mechanic or go to dealership and corporations. Shade tree is good for what they know. Corporations hire damn near anyone so you rarely find a good mechanic there. Look for the mom and pop shops that’s been in business for a while and specialize in your vehicle is the key. Ask questions learn to trust. Sometimes ask questions you know the answer to. Ask them to show you what’s wrong and what the fix involved. If they can’t answer your questions stand clear on them.

i have 330k on my 94. yesterday it started making a rattling sound around 1700 rpm. it did this for a few days about a year ago and went away. i’m hoping it’s just the manifold cover because i know for a fact that it does rattle pretty loud. oil pressure and everything is fine so i’m going to tighten it down and hope it goes away. it sounds like a fan hitting something metal that’s the best way i can describe it. and just for the record that’s not what it is i’ve checked haha. also the sound isn’t heard in park or neutral so i’m assuming it wouldn’t be a knock of any kind? i usually do all my own work but i haven’t had to anything this in depth before so any insight would be appreciated.

I have a Chevy Venture 2005. It was rattling in the rear. I found the emergency brake line mount that was welded to the rear axle casing had broke away at the weld and was hanging about 1/8" about the axle. It was beating against the axle casing with every small bump in the road. The mount was welded about midway between the rear wheels. When I heard your noise it reminded me of the same rattling sound. My cure was several wounds of electrical tape and no more rattle and the emergency brake still works.

Mine was the ebrake rusted out inside the wheel but the thing about this video is it's getting a lot of views and comments, the comments that are getting posted are from people just like you posting about their personal experiences with these trucks. You can't get better info than that if you own one of these. So thank you and I hope you have a great new year!

Looks/sounds like the leaf springs. Had same problem with my truck and got the leaf springs changed out for free.

I'm having the same problem with my gmc yukon. I checked with few mechanics and they said to replace the gear box which is in thousands. Whats the actual problem? the breaks, bearings or what else. If i know the problem i can explain it to the mechanic and get it fixed. Thanks

I had an 03 Silverado it did the same thing. The shop I usually go to nailed down to my emergency brake (which is on the rear). They removed it and said a new one is $300ish. I never replaced it.

The Burb Billy Growing on you? you replaced so much in the effort to the $105 e brake solution that you are now keeping that truck into the 300k..."damnit!"

+The Burb Billy (The Burbbilly), have you done your follow up video/2017? Just curious your feelings now. I have a 2008 GMC Sierra crew cab/1500/5.3 L V-8. I bought her brand-new and have put all 228k mi on her. Before this truck I owned 8 other vehicles that I didn't care for, except I did like certain things about my 99 Sierra & my 99 mustang GT. anyways, my 08 sierraTx edition takes the cake👍🏻, the my kids and I call her "Lucy", she has kept us safe through a few accidents 2 of them which were serious. Being sideswiped while traveling 65 mph & had to replace the tire, wheel,and back axle., The at fault vehicle was totaled and the driver injured , & fortunately we were all fine! & another time, we were rear ended, the other vehicle was traveling a decent rate of speed and it totaled their minivan not a scratch on my Lucy, myself or most importantly my kids. I LOVE DRIVING THIS TRUCK. It's just now starting to have a issues, list started @ 220k.
@lindsayprice84117 жыл бұрын
MISSION SAVE LUCY🙏🏼.Opinions? Anyways I've had no problems up until 220k miles& & Im trying to decide whether to keep her or not? shes paid for and for a single mother that's what I need. Lucy's check engine light will not go off. Truck shakes between 40 mph - 55 mph. Recently, very noisy with slightest bumps,, steering "loose"? The tire shop says that she's a lost cause, claiming bad rear differential & the transmission is going out.. I am not in agreement there. In the last few days my dad and I have replaced the brake switch (fixed my cruise control/doors locking and unlocking/ect). Next we cleaned the throttle body sensor we have already replaced it about a year ago. We also found that the struts/bushings were super loose, so we replaced and tighten those. The transmission fluid was too low. So we added a quart of fluid. Waiting to see how much all this helps. But I really want to do all I can to save this truck. Any advice or opinions are welcome. Appreciate it!!

Lindsay, thanks for the post/question. I'm not a mechanic but I have had this truck for a while now and have learned a few things along the way. First, the dash clusters suck. period. Some people report bad transmissions or weak trannys, I have not had that happen yet. I'm in a similar situation to you now, I can look to buy a new vehicle or keep my "trusty rusty". When I look at the cost of a new car/truck and what the payments will be, my "trusty rusty" looks like it may be in my life for a bit while more :-) One of my brothers is a motor head and he loves the 5.3 that we have in our trucks. I have to say I love mine as well. I am well over 200000 and I have a tick but I'm blaming that on me. I used a semi synthetic motor oil and pushed the changes out to 5000 miles per the shop recommendation and never should have done that, found sludge when I change the oil. It's a tough call when you're looking at a new car purchase because of the cost vs what may happen to "Lucy" and what that may cost you. I feel that these motors will go past 300000 so if I get this tick resolved I am planning on getting my A/C replaced and holding on to mine. Hope this helps and I really like the idea of an updated 2017 video to cover some of the other things I've dealt with how I feel about these trucks. Thanks again for the post and for being a viewer, take care.

my 1999 has a f**** t case so I only use 2wd. it does make the same sounds and my dad said it sounds like something loose in the tire or axel. could it be the same thing? and did your park break work still?

also, after an idiot mechanic forgetting the c clip, my drive shaft fell out and scraped the pavement going about 60 after leaving the shop.

very apologetic, but unable to explain his stupidity. got my engine codes cleared for free but could have done that myself, and he fixed his mistakes for free as well. still not impressed. here i am a few months later and everything he fixed is falling apart.

@Anthony123212 Жыл бұрын
Had the exact same thing happen to my 2013 Chevy Silverado. The way I found out the cause of the noise was when it shredded the tube that feeds the brake fluid and when I went to hit the brakes and they didn’t work. Could’ve killed people. Thank you, Chevy and all the over priced mechanics in the Chevy dealership. Wish I could own a house, but instead I constantly have to repair my truck. 👍🏻

I've spent $1000 as well buying parts I don't need. Major thanks for sharing this video! I was actually getting ready to buy another part to see if that would fix it. Strange how mechanics can't figure this out.
@mathewfisher75198 жыл бұрын
put your back on jack strands and take the tyres off and then spin the wheel hub with your hand to see if thire is a grinding noes if so you may need a wheel bearing or a you duh shield could be rubbing on it them 2 thins are come but spin both sides and if it's just the one side it's just something symple and u want that or if no noes put your lug nuts on as far as they go.. not with the tyre on the truck if they can snug them up to the brake drums that's just so they stay in place or they dont come off And start your truck up and put it in drive then give it some gas about whare u hear it the most the. lison and if u here it lay nex to it and u can here whare it's comeing from .. I did that to mine and it's coming from the drive shaft and it so you just need to replace the the York's or grease them up and it should stop

took me 2 seconds to hear loose brake pads , I have heard them so bad sounds like front bumper is about fall off.
@NoSmileification8 жыл бұрын
I just fixed a rattling noise from when my shocks were replaced, they weren't put on tight enough because the bolt is very slightly smaller than the bolt hole. It is LOUD when your driving with the non stop motion that shocks get. I would bet it's something with the brakes whether its a loose part or the clamp on the leave springs is broken. Any driveshaft or major drivetrain issue and you wouldnt be driving, or at least you would seriously feel it.

Bearings in the hub are fucked. I diagnosed mine in 5 mins. No lift no jack. Just real common sense and know how.
@shauncunningham508810 ай бұрын
I had the same issue. I looked at my transmission fluid and it was down a quart I put the cord in noise one away. Go figure, be careful when you talk to people saying they same thing no things they don't they just show you're everything and I do all the work on my truck so I kinda listen to him but I don't listen to anybody. I just go through this commands step-by-step by step-by-step. Do the same. My friend, good luck with your truck.

during the video of your undercarriage the first thought i had was the E-brake because it sounded like something was loose....happened on a '79 Plymouth Volaré of mine....the actuator bar had come loose, and was dragging/rattling on the inside of the brake drum....had a pretty good worn spot on it too....glad you finally got your problem fixed

I had problems with the dash cluster but didn't need to replace it. The connectors were dirty and the connection was not tight enough. I sprayed electronic connector cleaner into both male and female connectors. Then I gently nudged the outer prongs of the female pins to create a tighter fit. It has worked perfectly since.

My daughers mother is having similar issues with hers. if the noise is sounding like its under your seat...try getting a look at the transfer case...also have that diff looked at...Might have parts coming loose inside...the pin that hold the spyder gears together can work loose in some cases. I hope you have had it figured out by now. Good luck.
