In this most recent Average Joes Adventure, Brendan headed out to find out whether the burbot spawn had started yet or not. Turns out it did not, but that didn't stop him from catching a few burbs, including one perfect sized eater. Brendan explains what kind of structure and bottom he looks for when fishing for burbot, as well as what type of lure he uses to catch them. He then cleans up the fish, preps it for cooking, cooks it in a couple different ways, eats it, and gives his review on each style.

I was waiting to see a comment on those 😂 Those are all Ottawa Valley Perch! Those are all between 13.5-14.75”, this year we got a few more between 14.5-15”! Shooting for 16” next 😁

Do you recommend salting the meat for most whitefish?

I salt every fish I catch when prepping! All white meat fish and bigger lake trout fillets. Only ones I don’t wash with salt would be smaller Brookies/splake or a smelt. All white meat fish though I do wash with salt! Thanks for the comments Nick! Appreciate you watching!

Bit surprised you didn't throw the pre-spawn female back. There must be loads of them in that lake.

One thing I didn’t mention that I learned as I was filming this video is that not all females spawn every year. This female in particular I don’t think was going to be a spawner this year, her eggs were very under developed. That being said, she was a good size to keep, not too small where there is nothing to them, but not a really big spawner. I generally like to keep in the 4-6lbs range, best bang for your buck! This lake does have a good population of Burbot, that’s one of the only species left in the lake that is doing alright! 👍🏻
