Cut through the Yorkshire Wolds, this 1747 yard tunnel opened in 1853 on the Malton and Driffield Junction Railway, finally closing along with the line in 1958.
Since then it has suffered two major collapses, in 1978 hear the southern portal where the brick lining has failed, leaving the chalk bore fairly stable. and another in the 1980s near the northern portal, this appears to be a failure of a construction shaft.
This effectively blocked a section between the collapsed sections we were unable to access, but we explored what we could.
I understand this tunnel floods after wet weather conditions so oir timing for this visit was well planned.
