I have an old town auto pilot with a trailer with lots of electronics. Loading and unloading was still a pain. It’s heavy and I’m older women. I ended up buying a new deep V boat last summer. I do miss some aspects of kayak fishing but the space and range of an 18’ boat is awesome. Fishing any way that works for someone is the best.

Kayak all the way. I've been kayak fishing 10 years now. On my second PA12, currently the 360. I load in & out of bed of my truck without any bed extender's. I keep my kayak completely rigged. Rods stay in horizontal rod storage. The PA12 has 2 tubes per side but you can easily slide 2 rods in each tube. So I can come home slide it in bed of my truck & roll in a few minutes. I have a 10" Garmin with LVS34 system & steady cast with fishing specialties pole. I have plenty of room, besides my electronics only other 2 things connected to my yak is 1 phone mount & 1 rod holder. I keep my kayak a simple as possible. No trolling motor. Kayak fishing to me is about stealth & simplicity & getting to hard to places boats cannot! John boats are awesome too. To each their own! A metal John boat is very load, unless you build a floor & use marine mat or carpet it's not very quiet unless you don't move... Only negative for John boat is a trailer & being loud. You can fix the noise issues. Hard to get away from the trailer. With the big lakes around me they charge you to park only if you have a trailer... So no trailer you park & fish for free!

Definitely a kayak for where I'm at right now but there are times when I wish I had a boat. Another plus for the kayak is sometimes you can get a really good deal on a new one. As an example there's literally a PDL 106 on google right now for $1585 (which is about what I paid for mine just over a year ago). That would leave you $200 for a basic sonar fish finder and then enough for wheels and a crate and get you out the door for just under $2k. You can also get a roof rack for your car and then just car top a kayak which can make it a little easier to transport. On the other hand a boat is better on larger bodies of water and can be a little more fun if you are fishing with someone else.

I don't have a vehicle to pull a big ass boat, that's why I went with a kayak. Now a good fishing kayak is a scarce thing in my area so I had to drive 7 hours one way to pick up my SS127. I still went with a trailer as loading a rigged up kayak onto roof of my car just didn't sound like fun. Was a bit of a challenge just getting the bare one home. I fish mostly smaller lakes so I think this kayak will work perfect for me. And if something bigger is required, I have a few buddies with boats that are always up for a day on the lake.

There's an option between the two you're talking about and that's a canoe. I bought Coleman Scanoe on sale for under $400, put a nice 55# thrust trolling motor on it, and my two boys and I used to go fishing in it all the time. I built really nice stabilizers for it so the boys would feel more secure (and therefore I would), and I used to stand up and fish in it all the time. It was like a floating dock. I liked it so much that even after the boys got older and lost interest, I still used it by myself for quite a while before moving on to a single person kayak which I also motorized. I had three adults in it several times with no problems. I love my motorized kayak now (also done on the inexpensive side at well under $2000 with everything new). With my multi-person canoe experience, I just don't feel the need to ever go with a full size boat. I could be convinced to get a Gheenoe (which is kind of a hybrid canoe/skiff), but other than that...nope.

You can find some great deals down here 😂. Found one completely decked out ready to fish for 1200$. For 10k I can build a new jon boat to bass boat conversion 😂😂. Kayak prices have gotten ridiculous. Btw the jon boats I use can go where a kayak can, I float in 4" to 6" of water lol. You can get silent or stealth model trolling motors too. I love my 10' jon boat. Can take two and two guys can carry it.

Okay, those deals are not common. Let's be real. That said, of course you can find some deals if you look hard enough. We didn't say you couldn't. However, I would love to see someone portage a jon boat over a dam and or launch on a lake with no boat launch. I've done it, and it sucks a lot.

You truly don't have to look that hard. They are all over marketplace and local ads year round. Maybe take a hour to find a really sweet deal but you can find numerous deals in that time.
@FoamingPussy6 ай бұрын
@@aaanglersThose deals are extremely common, especially in late Fall. Check your local classified ads. I got my 12' John boat with a brand new 6hp outboard and tilting boat trailer, all for $500. You can pull it behind literally any car. I pull mine with my Pontiac Vibe unless I'm going somewhere serious and absolutely need my truck. I can hitch up the boat & trailer loaded up, outboard motor trolling motor and down riggers mounted, gear, the works, and still walk back to the back of the trailer and pick the entire rig up to shoulder height with little effort. Tilting trailer allows me to launch from pretty much anywhere. And if I can't drive up to the water, I drag it. Put Teflon strakes on the bottom as skids for portaging across dikes when I'm duck hunting in it. My favorite thing in the world is pulling up next to a big F350 with a 34ft boat in my little station wagon, launching my boat solo in about 70 seconds. Using a guide rope to pull it over and tie it up to the dock. Go park my car and come back to see them still struggling to launch and some other clown that's been at the dock for 30 minutes trying to get his $100k boat to start. I hop in my little boat, fire the motor on the first pull, and leave them all behind. One time I even saw the dude's wife punch his arm and say, "see you don't need something big and fancy, you just need one that works." He's probably close to a quarter of a million dollars in between the truck, boat, and all his gear. I'm all in at like $5k including my car and all my gear. Guarantee I can catch just as many fish. It's not even really about what you have fishing, it's about what you know.

I have a 2006 18ft 150hp bass boat (about 25K new at the time) since new and an 8ft Pelican pontoon boat. I fish a lot of electric only lakes and if the ramp is good I use the bass boat every time. The small pontoon boat gives you a higher vantage point than a kayak and is a good fishing platform, fits in my truck bed and weighs about 100lbs and takes about another 75lbs to rig (seat, TM, battery). I do have to get fairly close to the water to launch it. I am considering getting a paddle kayak too since the lightest one could be portaged a fair distance and it would be totally about access I don’t think kayaks make great fishing platforms. The one thing you didn’t mention was tournaments. For 15K you could get a Kayak that is suitable for fishing Pro Level tournaments. Even used you are going to be over 50K for a marginal rig that would be suitable for the AAA level tournaments.

For 10k the boat has super reliable power. Granted I have another 5+k in decking and electronics. But when it comes to lakes and bigger rivers I’m team Jon boat all day. Admittedly however I do I have a couple higher end paddle fishing yaks for floating the skinny water that boats can’t get to. Crescent wins in that department for me 🤙🏼

I LOVED my pedal drive kayak. However, after about 5 years of ownership, I was happy to let it go for $1,200. It was an awesome vessel, but I could not bring my kids... and my body is getting older. I got a used 2018 1436 Jon Boat hull ($400)... a barely used 2004 Mercury 5hp 2 Stroke outboard (Free but $130 for the wire drill bit set to clean the carb, fuel lines, fuel filter, water impeller, head gasket from taking it apart for inspection [5 bolts!!!!]and hub oil). I then used the money that was left to get a new saltwater 55lb thrust Minn Kota Riptide tiller and LiTime 100AH lithium battery. With the 5hp she will cruise with me and the son and loaded cooler at about 12.5 mph... but the hull can handle 15hp... which will not be coming. So I can keep getting into the hp limited lakes. She drafts in about the same amount of water. Great for push-poling in the salt flats too. Now, I have spent more money getting a spanking new aluminum trailer for $1,600 and more goodies on the way soon for about the same (side scan fish finder and such) About to update the sheet metal to create some casting decks like a bass boat. Adding gator glide epoxy to the bottom and then painting. I am about $2,500 into it and will be about $3,500 into it when I am done. I will have a much more capable machine that is able to reach those distant targets with ease now. Even planned out some camping trips with the son.

But I'm going to invest 1-3k in a used motor and some electronics probably will be the cost with the basics so around 5k into the whole rig is pretty nice. Now my take on it is kayaks are really good and I love mine so my take is if you can get a decent jon boat under 3k with some basic stuff and decent length and width that would be the way to go but if not go the kayak route.

I have a well setup Perception Outlaw kayak, a canoe, a paddleboard, and Alumacraft Escape 165 boat. Taking money and space out of the equation... The boat is safer, faster to launch, hauls more fishing gear, and you can reasonably take a piss while on the water. The kayak is great for skinny water, but if you like to pretend you're a pro-bass fisherman (like me), buy a boat or get a tricked out custom trailer to haul your tricked out custom kayak. The paddleboard is for swimming and frog fishing. The canoe is for sailing, duh.

Your conclusion is on target- different boats for different folks. In my case I don’t want to deal with a trailer- own it, tow it. store it, launch with it or even need a launch ramp, at many local lakes and rivers. So I car top my Hobie Lynx, the lightest peddle kayak I could find, about 44 lbs. @blind_eye_fishing7 ай бұрын
@@aaanglers yes you are comparing apples to oranges. I can rig out a small jon boat to do the same things as a kayak for far less money. But yall was comparing big jon boats to kayaks that's apples to oranges. The "fishing" kayak spectrum is way smaller and less options than the jon boat market that extends from small skiff style to actual bass boat style. The problem is you guys have plenty of knowledge on kayak fishing because you've done tons of it but you have limited jon boat experience lol. I've fished many variations of both but have tons more jon boat experience from the smallest lightest setups up to main lake actual bigger boats. You seem to forget what all falls under the classification of a jon boat. Jon boats aren't limited to one size or even hull shape but generally are flat bottom aluminum boats/skiffs. There is very bottoms too though. There is 8' jon boats but they aren't super popular. Yall are talking the medium most popular sizes which doesn't compare to a large bass boat but can somewhat compare to kayak with more opertunities and options of use. You can't add a gas engine and travel farther distances with a kayak but you can with a 10' jon boat, you can take that same jon boat through and around the same places a kayak goes though. The best all around versatile vessel is a small jon boat and is exactly why the stayed popular for well over 50 years and are still popular in many areas of the country. Kayaks still have a long way to go to be as versatile as a jon boat it's that simple. They also have a long way to go to meet the affordability of jon boat setups. Btw yes if fished from kayaks, canoes, jon boats to big 20 plus foot boots lol. I know the advantages and differences in them all. I prefer a small jon boat in small waters and prefer a decent bass style boat on big waters. The fact is you prefer kayaks and don't want to admit the actual cross over of a well setup jon boat with more advantages because maybe of that limited experience with jon boats. Just so you know they make the same wheel caddies for jon boats. You can launch and do all things I've seen done with kayaks with a proper jon boat setup. But you can't add a gas engine or have the space you have with a jon boat with a kayak. I'm not saying that each don't have some advantages or that some shouldn't choose one over the other. But the most versatile cross over into kayak and or actual bass boat style fishing is a jon boat properly setup. And since there's way more jon boats out there they are simply cheaper to setup to what you want to fish over either kayak or bass boat.

We said "THE BEST YOU COULD GET", affordable is a whole other conversation. We were talking about RIGGED out kayaks and jon boats. Kayaks in general are really affordable with limited to no maintenance. You can get off the bank for $100-300

Look, I am married. My wife truly loves to fish. I will pick Us spending 15k on 2 fully decked out kayaks vs any boat for 1 reason. We both get to go where we want! Im fine spending 20k on 2 fully decked out kayaks as the waters that are most worth fishing in my area do not allow gas motors. Freedom to fish is what it's about!

The mod V Jon boat like mine; which is a Tracker 1448 Grizzly with an Evinrude E Tec 25HP 2 stroke. She goes 28 mpg with two good size dudes on board, and the stock prop. Plus a bow mounted 55lbs minnkota trolling motor. Plus with comfort and safety with a 5 foot beam it does not compare to kayaks with low free board. Also I😢 own 3 hobie kayak s ,but a 1448 is much nicer dryer and safer ride. The weather is not always perfect. Those tricked out to max heavy kayak s need a trailer too, or your going to get a hernia! Your bias towards kayaks is obvious.....
@aaanglers7 ай бұрын
And you are biased towards jon boats. It’s okay. We were neutral leaning towards kayaks, because the final part of the decision is preference. Isn’t it great that you can just buy what you prefer and fish how you want to fish?🎣
@malibujoe017 ай бұрын
@aaanglers I'm not bias. I own 3 hobbie s ! Yet it's a better investment to buy a Jon boat instead of a tricked out kayak that you would likely need a trailer for. My point is if you have garage the Jon boat is more useful and has way more utility for the money. If your tight on space kayak without a trailer and probably not 10 k investment is the way to go...
@aaanglers7 ай бұрын
@malibujoe01 okay, but the video was comparing a tricked out yak with a jon at the same price. You could get both cheaper, you don’t have to trick either out. And if you have a garage then do what ya want. The definition of bias here, is that we presented a neutral position, said we personally prefer kayaks for where we fish, and you can do what you want. And even though we did all that, the boat guys came in the comments and said don’t buy kayaks (not just you). That is a bias. To each their own, everyone has a preference
@malibujoe017 ай бұрын
@aaanglers For the second time I stated I own 3 hobbies. I have two, outbacks and one Pro Angler 12. You are bias ones; because of your living situation. For a 10k investments a Jon boat with a gas outboard ,and storage and the room for two people being able to fish together beats the heck out a 10K kayak investment. In fact, the only thing going for the kayak is no need for a trailer. But that's a big maybe with all the loaded accessories.... GOOD Day Sir.... 👍
@malibujoe017 ай бұрын
Again you guys are pushing the 10 k tricked out kayak over a Jon boat like its a no brainer; when it's far from it! When in reality space saving is the only positive over the Jon boat. Re- watch your own video from my perspective. The trade-offs are much better with a small boat....vs a kayak $ 500 or $ 9900 !

Neither, I went with a Sea Eagle 285. I live in an apartment where "feral tweekers" roam the neighborhood. You can't leave anything outside. Sea Eagle stores in a bag in my entry closet, But here in WA kayak anglers kind of suck. Biggest kayak con is the people in them. Ignorance seems to be their most redeeming quality. Best thing about night fishing is no kayakers.

There is no fucking way in hell u can find a peace of water u can get into with a kayak I can’t get into with a 12 to 14 foot Jon boat….. I can run 6 inches of water all day with the trolling motor and in half and inch of water I can lift my gas motor and get out and push just like I can it kayak….. 12 to 14 foot Jon baits also don’t absolutely need a trailer… I can slide on in the bed of a truck no problem….just like ur plastic kayak and I can also mount wheels on the back…. Just like ur kayak…. If I choose to I can buy an electric motor for a Jon boat or just run my trolling motor up front no problem… in my area used 12 to 14 foot Jon boat $500 bucks in darn good shape bare boat … $1000ish boat trailer and working motor…. I bought a 12 footer with a 4 hp motor for $300… and a trailer for $100… I then bought a used 4 hp outboard for got a heck of a deal at ducks for a minota edge trolling motor for $175 and then added a cheap 200 dollar low Arnie hook2 in the rear and humming bird helix 5di up front for like 350….. all said I’m into the hole rig for less then 1300 bucks and even if I went to spent $3k on forward facing sonar I’d still be into it for less then 5K…..and can go any where and do anything ur $15k kayak…..
