I used your series of videos to replace my IMS bearing, RMS and clutch over the past month on weekends. I have a 2002 911 with 76349 miles. Original bearing was in perfect condition. My throughout bearing had worn a spot on the clutch fork and the. Pressure plate had one of the 6 bolts loose to the flywheel. So my clutch is much lighter now. Thanks for the great series of videos. They inspired me to tackle the job myself.

Congratulations for your video. When I change the oil filter, I cut the filter paper and check that there are no traces of metal particles. No traces of metal particles means no problem IMS.

That's a great tip and something I've started doing as well. Even though I don't suspect a bad IMS, it makes sense to replace it now, since I need to do the clutch.

Hey thanks for these videos! I'm looking to be a 986 owner soon too so these videos are perfect! It really makes me want to get the 986 that much more! Keep posting stuff about the car! Very nice!!

Great series, gave me motivation to pull my tranny and have it rebuilt from video 1-4. I found that there was no need to remove the droplinks at 12:20. Once you detach the brackets towards the center of the bar, it will just rotate out of the way and you can tie it up.

Thanks for posting! Not sure if I'm ready to take on this big a job but it's great to see a complete vid set on how to do it.
@JonasSilius8 жыл бұрын
Just for the future reference, you can remove the wheels first and then undo the axle bolt by either putting the handbrake on or sticking a big screwdriver into the vented disks so that it doesn't let the disk turn. Good videos mate, keep it up!

Seattle?! Dang I was hoping we'd be able to hang out in California. :) Love your perspective on 986's (and 996's) feature, as it were, because of fear uncertainty and doubt around the IMS bearing. I'll be buying more in the future for sure.

Oh, man, We would totally hang out if I were still in California! I love what you've been doing with your 986s.

Thanks for making this series of videos. I have a 2004 Boxster base and the clutch just went out completely. I’m starting the replacement next week and will use your videos along with the 101 Boxster projects book. The IMs has been replaced with the LN bearing but it will be a good time to check it again. Are you still responding to questions if I come across anything that comes up?
@TheSchadenfreuda8 жыл бұрын
"The braces and the plate" do not affect the alignment. They form a stiff triangle to keep the lower end of your suspension castings in place. Those braces are not adjustable. The only way you will change the alignment is if you A) wreck the car, or B) if you move the eccentric bolts that actually affect the alignment, and fail to put them back where they started.
@BurnersCars8 жыл бұрын
Have a look at the front-most bolts on the two diagonal braces.

Welcome to my beautiful city! Keep up the great videos! Hey once you're done with all the work on your boxster you should try to make it out to the Redmond town center exotic car show. It's every Saturday from 9-11am on non raining days of course. July 9th is Porsche day. Insane turn out every year. It would be nice to see your car there.

Hi, I saw one of you videos where you used a Pelican sourced IMS bearing and used 3 set screws to hold the shaft by pinning the sprocket on the shaft in place. I don’t see anyone else using this method, but wow, what a time saver! Some say there’s a risk of slippage and/or pushing the shaft in. What are your thoughts?
@Stephenspounds8 жыл бұрын
I love the fact that you are tackling the notorious IMS issue. Take your time and it will be done before you know it. BTW, are you going to replace the entire axle or just the boot? Seems like joint was kinda dirty and not sure if grease was still inside. Would hate for you to have to redo the axle.
@BurnersCars8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And thanks for weighing in on the axle; I had the same thought. I'm going to take it apart, clean it up and probably replace the CV joint, depending on what it looks like.

Amazing videos. Great job. I am not even a DIY guy on cars but your thoroughness has given me the confidence to take this job. So THANK YOU. Here is my first question of many..... How high do you have to raise the car? Most jack stands don't go past 17". Thanks Thom in KC
@BurnersCars8 жыл бұрын
Awesome! When I started this project I found lots of info out there, but no comprehensive guide. I wanted to create a series that included all steps. Feel free to ask questions as you go. As for the jack stands, yes, the ones I used only went up to 17". I talk a little about the height requirements here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKfQqYKwmLKApNEm10s Note that you don't need the whole car to be 20-23 inches high, just the back bumper, and you can use the notch for the exhaust to help you clear the car. I assume you've already found the IMS playlist I created: kzbin.info/aero/PLiya6G1pHhIYyzhlVzS_LwoIovrlv6_lv I also talk a bit about the jack I used in my tool review, here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3uYiKqYnLaYoNUm27s Good luck! Keep me informed of your progress. It's really satisfying to be able to say you removed your transmission and replaced your IMS yourself!

Just got to video 4 where you speak of heights. You beat me too it with your reply. Thanks.... I'll keep you all in the loop. :) thanks again.

You should sell video's these are really great!! One question do the cross braces really affect your alignment?
@BurnersCars8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'd love to do this for a living, but let's face it, I'm going to have to get a real job here in Seattle. I believe the braces do affect the alignment. The front bolts and bolt holes on the cross braces seem to have the capability for adjustment. I'll find out for sure. I know what my alignment was before the job. I'll probably take it in and see if it changed.

Loving all your videos. Have a question in regards to jacking the car up. Once you had the car on the low settings, where did you use on the underside of the car to gradually jack up the stands to a higher setting?. I'm stuck as to how to do it (thinking of safety, do not want it tipping on me!) Is there somewhere on the centre mid of the car to jack up the front? I understand it's better to jack up a car end to end rather than side to side. Any help would be appreciated, as I'm stuck with the car on low jack settings and need to jack it up more to start working on it.
@BurnersCars7 жыл бұрын
I did basically the same thing you did. I got the car up on 4 jack stands on the low setting first. Once that's done, I was able to jack up the front and back in several stages. Once all four points are on jack stands, I found it doesn't matter where on the front I placed the jack, it moved the front up equally. I just kept an eye on things and took it slow. I also placed a few large cinder blocks under the car for insurance.

I'm using the Bentley service manual... not sure if they made one for the 987 but the info on the 986 is excellent. As for the support bar, did you see the video and post on my tools? I show it a little better, there: burnerscars.blogspot.com/2016/09/engine-support-bar.html and at 5:18 ish in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3uYiKqYnLaYoNU

Really like your videos, how do you educate yourself before all of these Repairs? The reason I ask is you seem to have a really good understanding of things? Do you have an engineering background?
@BurnersCars7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don't have an engineering background, but I do have a pretty strong background in math and computer science. I suspect these skills help. I draw on my experience (I've always repaired my own cars) and spend a fair amount of time researching. I've started a small collection of Porsche TSBs (the best sources) along with the Bentley manual (good, but sometimes wrong) and the Pelican Parts book (decent, but wrong often enough that I usually cross-check it with another source).
