Even though I do this kind of stuff all the time on my tree infested property, and have been doing this same kind of thing since the early 80s, I never get bored with it or tired of it. It still feels as exciting as it did back then. Enough so that I can sit through a whole video of someone else doing it and not even start yawning. I’d like to see more videos on slash and different methods of dealing with post logging debris, such as scattering, piling, pile burning, broadcast burning, chipping, composting, mulching, filling in holes with brush and slash, clogging up creeks and gullies to slow down runoff, creating beaver analogs, creating wildlife habitat, nature sculptures, nursing logs, debris barricades to protect saplings or berry patches from deer, etc. A lot of people think there’s only one way to deal with slash: dozer pile and burn it. I beg to differ.

I did my burn just before Christmas after first snow. I had a bunch of 90 foot Aspens that had been on the ground for a few years, I cut them intp 10 foor lengths, stacked them together with half a dozen carboard boxes full of brush clippings, poured 5 galls of kerosen on her and lit her up. It burned real hot and gave off very little smoke. After two and a hald daus it had all gone. Happy New Year Friend from BC Canada.

Hmmmm, 7:30 pm here in Michigan, had a couple of beers and now a good laugh. I'm on the farm near Battle Creek, Mi., Widowed 10 years now and really needed a good laugh tonight. I've only watched a couple of your videos and trying to figure out what you are all about over there. So far I agree with everything you say and do and it confuses me. From what I see everyone is legalizing every crazy idea or drug over there which makes me wonder if I'm being lied to or am I moving left, Lol. Anyway, as much as I take risk I wonder about that big of fire near stuff you say loves to catch fire. Don't need any more forest fires. Probably there's more distance than camera shows and I'm certain you know what you are doing. Glad to hear mention about Osage orange trees. Was popular here in Mich. back in the 50-60's but rare now thank goodness. They were pushed as good natural fences but sure flattened a bunch of tractor tires. Thanks for the good laughs and good humor, it was really needed tonight. Happy New Years and Thank You. May 2024 be better for us all.

Coffee is hot too; just ask McDonald’s. OSB is probably 50% binders - perhaps that’s why it’s hard to ignite? It sure rots easily though I nearly got on a Grand Jury panel. Had to go over the hill to Pasadena (California). They were empaneling three juries, so they needed 99 jurors. I was looking forward to serving (I’m retired), and they had called for 125 prospective jurors to report, so my chances were pretty good. After all the excuses the usual reasons (caregivers, medical appointments, planned vacations - “I already booked my tickets”, etc) the pool was whittled down to 105. But at the end of the day six of us went home without being picked.

Don't quote me, but I think osb is supposed to be "flame resistant". Similar to CLS timber. I used to be a timber framer and that was the excuse we used when you get a site manager that thinks it's unsafe to smoke inside wooden building with no roof, in a country where it rains most of the time.

Nah. Old fashioned gets confused with universally logical far too much. Some things were figured out well, and long ago. I enjoy starting a fire just as you do, makes it a bit of challenge, engaging, and a sense of a job well done. And honestly as a perfext example, my older cousin went to start a fire one day. Bunch of logs, no fodder, and gas. I think it was three times that fire went out, and he gave up. Not because he couldn't start a fire, but he lost his point in saying gas was faster than building the fire up, and didn't want to do what I had said from the beginning. Only costed 4 dollars to not start a fire.. So I did, started a baby fire, and built it up in no time. Gotta give that fire roots! Not bragging, just sharing a good time.

Jury duty in Josephine County should be a riot! Or, maybe you’re in Jackson, which isn’t much better. Either way I’m sure you’ll have fun and come out of that experience with at least a few good stories to tell. Consider doing a video on “old man’s beard” and how flammable and prevalent it is in our woods. I’m sure you’ve seen how it grows thick on the dead branches of reprod trees that are planted so close together all of their lower branches die out, which is a fire hazard on its own. Dang Old Man’s Beard is almost like gasoline hanging from the branches. I can relate to this video as I bought some so called fire resistant shirts and pants to wear for the burn pile part of my public land gorilla fuel reduction projects and they got full of holes regardless. Also, I’ve lost most of my eye brows and some of my hair a few times over the years getting too close to the burn pile. Good stuff you’re putting out there! Happy New Year Mr. Wilson!
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands 10 ай бұрын
This is Jackson, I can only imagine it being about half a notch better than Josephine. You are probably right, a riot. I got selected as just an alternate juror so I might be off the hook. I don’t have enough old man’s beard here to be a significant fire hazard. I know it is in some areas just as you describe. It’s an idea to consider. Happy new year to you. We need more gorillas out there.

@@WilsonForestLands I have jury duty coming up in Jackson too! Blaaa! I just posted a short of a little logging operation near Galls Creek you might find interesting. Private land operation running a high-line you can watch/video from across the canyon. Something you don’t see everyday. Good view of it up Kane Creek Rd. (Off Old Stage Rd). Might make some good content for you, at least for a short. They put their yarder right at the end of a BLM rd where I was doing some fuel reduction last winter. BTW, I wrote a letter to the BLM about my fuel reduction efforts and they called me. That turned out to be an interesting conversation.

Fires burn up great but not well down so light the bottom of your pile.
