As a person who hasn't yet made it to BRC i do frequent renaissance festivals and i totally agree that having some fun things to wear makes for a more immersive experience. You can still have fun outfits and dress up your more comfy clothes. I'm kinda good at channeling my inner Stevie Nicks while rocking my black jeans and boots 🙂 you have no idea how far a few veils and some flowers in your hair will go toward helping you balance comfort with fun outfits.

While I appreciate the sentiment behind this video, I need to jump in here because I am really thrown by the use of the words "no-no's" and "faux pas" ... I would like to suggest using words like "10 Principles" and explaining what we do and why we do it. We choose the 10 Principles of Leave No Trace and Decommodification because there are careful thoughts behind them. Once you understand the meaning and intention behind these, you have the opportunity to grow both at Burning Man and in the default world. What is being shared here are "suggestions" or "recommendations" rather than "rules" and "no-no's". Take a look at the library of Halcyon's videos about Burning Man for ideas about how to communicate the spirit of Burning Man and the principles. He does this very well. Thank you and see you in the dust.

I'm going to wear a straw hat, Ray bans, Cargo shorts, with with Hawaiian shirt. Then I'm going walk around and say, "Chill man. Feel the peace." I also have a giant robot, but I don't wear him, he is not clothing.

I generally dress to be comfortable (I bring a pile of white oxford shirts. My profile photo is from Burning Man) and spend about 10-12 days on the playa. Not everyone who isn't wearing a costume is a tourist, and not everyone in a costume is actually a legit participant. Otherwise, your video is legit.

Thanks for helping me decide. This is way too establishment for me. I get the "pack it in - pack it out" mentality. But this sounds like too many "establishment" rules, and not enough personal responsibility. I am just gonna go hiking, camping, and toking.

Jeez, for a gathering that's all about being free, getting in touch with yourself, no judgement and togetherness, there sure are a lot of rules, judgements and things you're "not allowed to do" or that people will judge you for...

What? This has to do with the COMMUNITY PRINCIPLES of burning man specifically two of them: "leave no trace" and "decommodification". We help each other learn the rules, so we can all be on the same page about principles and having the event be what it is: adhering to those ten principles. Leaving no trace is really important!! She's offering so you don't have to learn the hard way, and be that person who unintentionally litters things, affects the land, and the ability for BM to go back on the land, because they "didn't think about it" ahead of time.

This video is about *advice*. It's not rules. It's "here's what will be uncomfortable, messy, inconvenient, and may send the wrong message to people around you". You can still choose to wear whatever you want.

Super informative! Does that also apply for bands' t-shirts? or just brands?
@projectpterodactyl81

Thanks :) I've never thought about band t-shirts! That's such an interesting questions. I'm sure that everyone would have their own opinion on it, but personally I wouldn't class it the same as wearing a shirt with a huge brand logo all over it. I feel like when people are wearing bands' t-shirts it's more a way for someone to show their appreciation for that bands music rather than as "advertising".

@projectpterodactyl81

It's more the extremes you need to be prepared for, so you might have some nights where it's not that cold and others where it's really cold. The coldest is usually about 40F (4C) but even if the temperature isn't too cold there could be wind which will make it feel a lot colder. If you're super active at night like dancing and running about then that'll keep you warmer as well. You'll want to be prepared for anything really, have some bits for nights when it's colder and some bits for when it's warmer. That's why a lot of people bring fur coats, it's easy to stick on on a chilly night, and you can leave it behind when it's not too cold.

@StacyBS

MOOP means "matter out of place" - in other words, anything that doesn't naturally belong in that environment. That includes feathers, sequins, bits of fur, cloth, cigarette butts, trash, oil, etc.

The moment you said the words cultural appropriation and offend I realized how people that think along those lines have ruined what was once a great thing. First year firing of fully auto guns at junk cars in the desert. Now you cant where a logo.

Your comment on cultural appropriation wasn't entirely accurate. Mardi Gras Feathers do come from Mardi Gras Native Americans. Just FYI. Knowledge is Power. Just like many tribes, Native American tribes of Louisiana were excluded and oppressed. Do you research before stating the fact. Much Love

@LakotaCat

Some of the black people are descenents of Native Americans in that area BUT Madi Gras outfits have very little to do with Native American cultures. They took some very basic ideas and incorporated in with their own cultural styles.

Honestly, I have been interested in this in the past, even though I am not any sort of hedonist. BUT... I just can't imagine trying to have an enjoyable time with all the judgement and rules that seem to abound. Glitter falling on the floor? There isn't a floor. There is dust and dirt and dryness. And rules and judgement, and trucks bringing non-potable water and spraying it all over people, creating mud bogs... But NO GLITTER !!! And nobody pees on the dirt because it's against the rules? You are fooling yourself. I guess if one single blade of grass or natural bit of animal life showed up they would cancel everything and send everyone home? What happened to all those swarms of bugs that invaded. Wasn't that their home?

SO many incredible things happen at Burning Man. I hear what she is saying not as telling me that it is illegal to do these things, she is advising what to do if I want to be an incredibly respectful participant who wants the future of burning man to be successful and to keep continuing as long as possible! I know it seems like a lot her, however when I am there and just have already kept these things in mind when preparing, there is sooo much more to it! To the thing about water on the floor, if you go I think you will quickly realize why. If everyone even peed on the floor once it would be a gnarly mess. Keeping the water off of the floor is easy though. I barely even had to think about it because I just got used to it!

jestersMadhouse Huh, you must not get it. The point is, my regalia is important to me, to my family, and to my people. It's a way that we communicate and celebrate and pray, and it's fucking disrespectful to wear it. So, for the sake of not being a prick, don't do it. It's an easy way to save money and not look like an ass too.

Why is it OK to wear fur to Burning Man? Besides being really offensive to many people, it's probably the most ridiculous fabric?skin to wear in the desert. It's impossible to get the playa dust out of a fur coat, so basically it's just getting ruined anyway. A practical way to stay warm in the desert, it is not. Just wondered how this awful trend started. It's Aug. 31, things should be burning brightly out there. Hope you had a great time!
