In this video I discuss the science of sparks and how to make a "spark thrower" which is a leaf blower that has been rigged to throw 1400°C sparks. I use fine steel wool and a lot of blowing air to oxidize the iron to form iron oxide.
If you want to try to make this, the steel wool that I used was size 0000 steel wool and any metal whisk. Don't wear flammable clothing or do this in a dry area!

This idea just popped into my head so I figured I'd google and well here I am. Thank you for doing this and posting it! Very likely you will see this used in a coming video for me haha.

Ha ha, no its because I put the potassium hydroxide in it and I didn't want it to run off onto my lawn and kill my grass when I washed it off with the hose after:)

Yeah, I wished the potassium worked better. I will probably do a video later on coloring with different elements.

One of my favorite tricks was to fluff a ball of steel wool and place into a metal coffee can (if you can still find one) ! If you have an oxy acetaline torch handy turn on the oxigen ONLY ! Flood the can ! When you toss in a lit match it will flash like an old fashioned flash bulb! A coworker tried to duplicate my demonstration but turned on the acetaline first and nearly blew himself up! Fortunately he only lost some hair and eyebrows! A good laugh was had by all in observance!

Bro! This is the exact idea I had and decided to do... However, I'm not happy with the sparks flying only two metres and no further. I'd like it to go further, so I'm thinking of rigging up a metal tube system or something. Have you experimented any further with that sort of thing?

I burned alot of iron today. this is how flint and steels work, by alloying the iron to make it more flamable and then burning it in the air

Should have done like my son and myself did and just tie a wad to some electrical wire light it and spin it around you. I have a video of my son doing it and he was throwing 15 showers of sparks in a 360° arc.
