Melt a stack of pennies, burst a glass bottle, damage various food items, and incinerate wood using the power of the Sun! This 4 foot magnifying lens will melt concrete, and nearly anything else that gets in its way.

WARNING:
This project should not be attempted without adult supervision and adequate training. Misuse, or careless use, of tools or projects may result in serious injury property damage, or death. Concentrated solar energy can start fires and cause personal and property damage. Concentrated UV radiation may cause blindness. Do not look directly at focal point without eye protection like welding goggles. Burning of metals like zinc, may release toxic gasses that can be harmful if inhaled. Extreme caution is advised. Use of this video content is at your own risk.

Project History & More Info:
LEGALITIES: Some people have asked about the legality of treating pennies in this manner. The federal law states that there are exceptions made for use as "educational, amusement, novelty, jewelry, and similar purposes as long as the volumes treated and the nature of the treatment make it clear that such treatment is not intended as a means by which to profit solely from the value of the metal content of the coins." For more information, see: www.federalreg...
A 4 foot magnifying glass is powerful enough to melt metal, incinerate wood, and burn holes in concrete.
Putting that statement to the test with various items was the purpose of this project. I'm impressed at the results, and excited at the power available through this Fresnel lens that I've nicknamed my "Solar Scorcher".
In the summer, the sunlight at this spot is around 2000ºF, maybe more. Enough to melt spots of concrete into glowing orange liquid.
I'm curious to see what I can do with all this heat so I've filled a glass bottle with water and I'll punch a hole in the cap. It's incredible to see that the instant I focus my lens on the bottle, it starts smoking. Just a few moments later this water is so hot it's boiling, and I'm a little nervous the bottle might blow. Yep, there it goes. I'll try burning a penny, and, wow, it melted. How about a stack of pennies? Yep, they're nothing but liquid metal now, and I'm thinking that slag in the mixture must be what's left of the copper coating. It's only taking about 4 seconds to melt these.
Well, I'm convinced there's an insane amount of power behind these lenses. If you'd like to see where I got this one, take a look at my video on how I hacked it out of an old TV.
• How to get 2000ºF Sola...
This one boiled water in less than a minute, welded a nickel to concrete, and instantly torched any piece of wood in it's way.
It was brought to my attention that Kipkay did a project like a couple of years ago that he called the "Solar Death Ray". Check out his awesome video: • Solar Death Ray vs. iPod

97 million miles away from the sun, a measly square meter of the sun's power is focused back into a small spot of light capable of melting metal. If that doesn't paint a picture of the sun's energy, then I'm not sure what would.

depend on the pool bottom and size. if its a reflective material then it would take forever. if its dark ,non reflective and small to medium sized then maybe just with 10 of these ,anyway its always possible to cause a crack at the bottom with it.

u need to put something dark (black metal sheet) on the water surface. since it is in the water it not gonna melt or burn but it transfer the heat to water. but it takes for ever to heat up the pool in this way
@iPelaaja1
@iPelaaja1 8 жыл бұрын
Think about it.. The len just focuses the suns energy from lets say one square meter or foot to the pool. What happens without a lens? Well that same square meter hits the pool.. And it has exactly the same amount of energy. So your pool will heat just as slowly as without a lens because it receives the same energy... Of course if you place them so that they focus sun from somewhere where the suns rays werent going into the pool, it would heat up faster, becuase you have one extra square meter/foot worth of heat energy going in. But water is very reflective, so it'll reflect most of the heat away. Basically what im saying, a pool wont heat any faster with this than without...

@jameshutton123

This is a Fresnel lense, it acts as a condensed version of a magnifine glass. Therefore it needs to be at the perfect angle with its normal vector pointing towards the sun, and even then will only burn things in it's focal point which would be a few feet away and only be a range of about 6 inches. If you understood the physics behind the lense, you would see that carrying it around is about as dangerous as plugging in a power cord.

I always wondered.....would it be possible to make something like this that functions as a power-converter/generator? Wouldn't that be extremely cheap and effective? Giant magnifying glasses in a field/desert, magnifying the sun's rays and collecting all that heat/power into some kind of generator. Has anything like that been done before? There would literally be no pollution.

sorry bro but I found nothing interesting that was listed on your blog site. I hit the link and some video was trying to load. I am glad I use Safari web browser because Safari energy saver kicked in and didn't load the video. I probably saved $0.00028 on my energy bill by not loading the video. And I found no products for sale, why mention $200 when there are no products at all. If I purchase the video then how in the world is the video going to install solar panels at my house, is it some kind of virus that will turn my mac book pro into a transformer which will then magically create panels and disconnect me from the grid or what. what if i like to play tron, why disconnect me from the grid???

The total energy of a system can be subdivided and classified into potential energy, kinetic energy, or combinations of the two in various ways. Kinetic energy is determined by the movement of an object - or the composite motion of the components of an object - and potential energy reflects the potential of an object to have motion, and generally is a function of the position of an object within a field or may be stored in the field itself. While these two categories are sufficient to describe all forms of energy, it is often convenient to refer to particular combinations of potential and kinetic energy as its own form. For example, the sum of translational and rotational kinetic and potential energy within a system is referred to as mechanical energy, whereas nuclear energy refers to the combined potentials within an atomic nucleus from either the nuclear force or the weak force, among other examples.
