I am a cybersecurity engineer and I love my job, there are plenty of cybersecurity roles that are as boring as crap and there are an equal number that are super interesting. There is a type of stress to be sure, but it's the same type of stress as playing a video game where you are fighting a boss and you are just trying to win. If you have the right role in cybersecurity the bad guys are that boss, and you're fighting them. If you are competent you have the advantage over them (even the APTs). Essentially working in cybersecurity is like a real life videogame. It's super fun.

Hi Caitlin, thanks for sharing your personal struggles here. I think all of us that have worked in IT over a period of time can relate in some way. Ive learned after 14 years, that working in IT requires a healthy life balance. Shutting off at 5, and working on your own goals was the best advice i could tell someone in IT.

Hey Caitlin! Yes IT for me, since middle of last year has been extremely hectic. Most days I feel like a drone. I know how mentally straining it is to be underpaid. It's not a good feeling... Don't worry about loosing your second eye (this is not me saying you shouldn't take care of it 😅) but I bet you'll be fine, from what I see your eyes look healthy so you seem to be doing a good job taking care of them. Normally most people tend not to bother about their mental health, but you've taken one of the best decisions to preserve your mental health, and I'm standing solidly behind you. 🖖😎

I think the trend is cloud computing is consolidating network and security resources through infrastructure and platform services. So both AWS and Azure provide cloud resources to substantially reduce the older trend of larger IT infrastructure.

I'm just coming back into I.T. after leaving for some time. I started my career on fire to come to work every day, but over time became overwhelmed. Eventually I was placed under a new boss that pretended to know I.t. but really had no idea. The work day ended up being filled with political land mines and drama. Eventually I HATED coming to work every day. Leaving a job like that and trying to explain it at all to someone that has never been through it is incredibly difficult. I am now back to work for a third less than what I was making but I don't care. I'm back to being excited to come to work every day and that means everything to me. Thank you for your video! Even though you struggled to explain, I feel that I know EXACTLY what you mean and how you feel.. Best wishes!!

I make $175k self-employed working mostly from home managing the IT for small businesses. The best part is that I get to play with all the technology from Avaya IP phone systems, to Axis CCTV, to firewalls, vSAN and failover clusters in virtualization, and Azure cloud, etc. I also get to research solutions for customers, purchase the solution, deploy and manage it. It was rough in the beginning but I always did the right thing and I never lost a client although recently I fired two clients which cost me $32k/year but I am much happier now. I am happy and I wouldn't change a thing.

I've seen the whole IT industry fall off in pay. I gave up since every IT job I was taking was paying terrible, no raises, and constant increased responsibilities. Applied for a position for a CCNA and they said the pay was $60k. My last job even constantly threatened us that we were going to be replaced by software. I have zero interest in going back to IT unless there are a lot of changes. But yeah, I'm a similar spot as I've had health issues that have kept me from working and my human interaction has been limited to doctors and nurses.... and it sucks. Anyways, that's awesome that you're going to start making videos again and that you're doing alright. Exited to see what you've got planned.

Eh, define IT? You mean helpdesk, A++ stuff? "Hey i broke my workstation, fix it", or are you talking site harding(active directory SSL/TLS encrypt, site to site tunneling, MFA authentication for the office, bit lockers blah blah blah....local stuff pertaining to the local office)? I'm curious because there is a distinction between IT and engineering(devops, appdev, SRE, systems eng, and security). The latter...well...there has been no backslide in compensation in any of those fields. If anything compensation specifically in the Sec sector is quite adequate rivaling even those in higher end financial positions(150K+). Now a days $60k is about...I dunno, I'd say, high skill entry level employee? If that makes sense. ie, in the overall aspect of things, its kind of entry level, like your first phase of engineering. 2-4 years you'll be in the 80-100K+ salary, pretty easily as long as you work hard.

About 5 years ago I got my first job in Infosec. 6 figures. Loved my coworkers, loved what I did. CISO was awesome. There were some roadblocks from other teams to my work and I really wanted to try more technical areas. But the worst part was the commute of 2 hours there and 2 hours back at times and no option for remote work. My neck started killing me and I started feeling burned out. I tried getting help from my CISO and HR to no avail. So although the money was awesome and I have yet to match it, I quit and took 4 months off to heal my neck with PT and learn more about other technical parts of Infosec. I came back to a job 30k lower than where I was. But honestly, my stress level was a ton less. Would I like to be making 6 figures again? You bet, but will I sacrifice my health again for it - no way.

Good on you! I'm a sort of multi-purpose techie (electrical engineer, network engineer, biohacker etc) and there is definitely a sort of "divide" that can occur. This is even more emphasized when it comes to security. I'm not sure one's mate needs to be into the same sort of techie stuff, but they DO need to be supportive of whatever you've got going on, or at least not detracting. I'm not on instagram etc. but I can appreciate the way you are prioritizing things. You're doing well -- keep on keeping on!

Speaking from experience, having someone who shares and supports your interests is crucial to any long lasting relationship, otherwise it's just misery. And yes... you learned everything on the job... more easily in the smaller companies. Had a boss once tell me that he pleaded to his kids NOT to go into I.T. or you'll regret it. Depending on the specific flavor of I.T. you may be constantly on-call all hours of the night and have no life. Even tho I'm married and have a very supportive wife, I've developed eye problems too and have some upcoming eye surgery scheduled. The stress can sometimes get unbearable. Looking back at my life (all the missed holidays and summer weekends with family and friends) made me reevaluate my future. You can never get back all that time lost and you can't take your money with you to heaven.

Walked away a number of years ago, called it the fast burn certification type of lifestyle, went and found myself, geeked out on figuring people out. Now about to step back in one form or another. Figured what where my motivation and faith came from. Sorry to hear about coming in underpaid. Something that annoys me about managers in that it is not a zero-sum game when you invest in an employee. IT types like to think of themselves as fluid in a dynamic industry when in actuality the average IT employee is someone who is looking for centeredness and a very dynamic sense of individuality in the midst of static controls and processes working for a manager who is more than likely insecure themselves. So yes adhere to the static controls and processes but find that thing in your hire that is more tacit, foster that. Pay everyone pretty much equal with experience and qualifications. Best to you with your health

I agree. Information Security is very stressful. I am an Information Security Officer and let me tell you when it comes to financial institutions, InfoSec is not winning best team award anytime soon. The line of business hates having to run things by us. And correct, know your worth. Some companies try to downplay your role to pay you less, but ISOs should always be on a level 8 at minimum, which is most companies, is a management role. Anything less, and you are being underpaid. However, the expectations can be above what they pay you, even with a 6 figure salary. I'm hanging in there, but after the bonus season, I plan on making a change. Not so much leave InfoSec, but get out of financial at least. I totally understand why you left the role.

@@Stupefii Yes come in handy in multiple of way but biggest right now is attribution. There is a long of ransomware, malware, etc where malware authors are copying and pasting code. Basically reusing code from previous exploit kits, malware, etc. I have every piece of malware broken down into a large database with hashes for headers, different parts of code, the whole file, etc So it becomes a big search engine where I can input a piece of code or malware and it will run through it to find any parcel match. Stick with it because there is a huge shortage of information security, reverse engineers, etc in the security field. There are plenty of openings now and will still be in the future.
