Very good video. You demonstrated everything so effeciently, both how the pickups sound and how the phase shift sounds.

This is the third video I e seen of one of theses transformations. The other two were strata , I don’t know that matters, yours is the only one of the guitars that sounded good. I make my own red specials and took a picture of your video to replicate your tele. It’s beautiful!

Great video and great guitar! I did a very similar project with my squier strat, but I used the Brian May signature trisonics. It wasn’t cheap, but the result was amazing. I specially love the sound of the three pickups with the neck one out of phase. When I was planning to do it (for about 3 years) there were almost no good videos about this kind of mod. I think there should be more, these guitars are very versatile and sound great

Did you have to rout out the pick guard to make those BM Tri sonics fit? I'm thinking of doing the same thing. Also . .is you're Strat solid body or chambered? Thanks.
@Fab985 жыл бұрын
DrRussPhd yes, the trisonics are bigger than the regular single coils. What I did is buying a new pickguard that had no holes and I made the holes that I wanted. That way I could also fit the six slider switches. It wasn’t difficult, I did it just with a dremmel and an exacto knife, but it takes a bit of patience. I think I also made some cad templates for the holes. Regarding the body it was a regular strat body (solid and with full thickness, not like the slimmer squier affinity). I needed to take out some small bits of wood, but nothing that couldn’t be done with a chisel

Fabián Hernández Can you post a video with the sound you get from it please?
@Fab985 жыл бұрын
Hans-Cees Speel I want to make a video, but I haven’t had the time to do it yet. However I will do it, hopefully soon. In my Instagram (@fabian98h23) I have some photos of the guitar (before and after the mods) and I occasionally upload videos of it, in case you want to check it out

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that all six switches could be adequately replaced by a single rotary switch and a P-P phase switch on one (or both) of the controls; it might not cover every possible permutation, but it could cover all that any particular guitarist might be prone to use, and it would not be nearly so unwieldy...

You're right - and it is cumbersome. The original Red Special has this arrangement so I copied it. The advantage of the 3 on / off switches is that you can easily select bridge and neck, all on, or all off (which is sometimes useful!). The phase switches though - given two pickups must be on to select out of phase options, you only need 2 switches, not 3. Also I dislike some of the out of phase sounds and never use them... On subsequent builds I've gone with 3 on off switches (the guitar is wired in series too), a push pull to put the neck out of phase (with either the middle or the bridge or both); one guitar had a push pull on the tone pot for the built in treble booster, and the latest one has a push pull to coil split the bridge and middle (it's a Firebird, with Firebird humbuckers).

@@matthewdodds2175 , As someone who's puttered with guitars and amps for years, it never ceases to amaze me how many players seem to want to replicate the set up of their hero; as a pragmatist, it just occurs to me that there might be a better way, as the evolution of design is what the human mind has always done best. I only intended it as a helpful suggestion...
@matthewdodds21754 жыл бұрын
@@chokkan7 No - I completely agree! It is a cumbersome system! And I think the original design is unnecessarily complex and has redundant switching options. I really like my simplified versions on later guitars I've made. Another option I've seen which reduces the switches is to use On/Off/On switches but for my brain that would confuse me!
@poochcastilon2 жыл бұрын
I respect your opinion, but really have never had a problem with the red special switching. Actually I do with a typical strat Set up accidentally hitting that damn thing. I think this guitar sounds pretty good, I’ve never even heard about the minis until today. I assume they are not mini Brian mays they are just mini trisonics. There is a difference between a regular trisonic and a Brian May trisonic

is one of the pickups reverse wound/polarity? Im wanting that brian may sort of tone.
@matthewdodds21754 жыл бұрын
Actually no it isn't. To be honest for me anyway you're going to get closest to the BM tone with a good treble booster and a decent valve amp. You're 75% of the way there with that!

the middle is reverse wound to cancel hum when in phase with the bridge
