I deside to try schmincke's burnt umber. Perfect chocolate-like hue and very appealing. Have holbein's version and this one is a bit reddish and paler.

I thought it was very interesting that the colors varied so much with these brands. I would think that “what your subject to paint “would determine which color would work best. 🤷‍♀️

thank you for the shout out 🥰 hope the brush is treating you well ;P and wowwww i didn't think schmincke's would be darker! reminds me of roman szmal. when i first swatched out roman szmal burnt umber, i definitely felt like it was darker than what i was used to with rembrandt's. and thank you sooooo much for the brands on top, so much easier to compare now! 😁

Thank you very much for the brushes 🙏 It's quite similar to my Escoda Perla, but the handle is much smaller, so it takes a bit of getting used to.

That Schminke Burnt Umber is nice. It’s a good single pigment alternative to the usually multi pigmented Van Dyke Browns. I’m not really a fan of student grade watercolour paints. They always look so flat. Keep meaning to compare my Daniel Smith Trans Brown Oxide with the Burnt Umber 🙄 My favourite here is the Daniel Smith. If I wanted it less red/darker, I’d mix in a little dark, cool blue or something. Thanks for the upload 👍🏼

I use Daniel smith's transparent brown and m. Grahams burnt umber. I love the translucent nature of the d.s. and the fairly reliable and true to a typical brown of m. Graham. Love your switching. Kathryn

Looks like I might have to pencil in the Daniel Smith Transparent Brown Oxide version for when my Van Gogh and Cotman Burnt Umber paints run out. Although, I'll probably keep using the Cotman one as it's cheap and perfectly adequate for my uses, plus it comes in a 21ml tube. I've got a Rembrandt Brown Transparent Oxide on order, so maybe that will do me for a while.

I use Burnt Umber a lot. I have the Cotman and Van Gogh in those palettes, plus Daniel Smith, Holbein, Sennelier and DaVinci. All are slightly different and all are very nice. The slightest touch mixed with yellows can make good warm shadows on a yellow flower. I use it a lot mixed with Ultramarine or Cerulean for lovely greys, cooler than those made with Burnt Sienna. Tree bark - check. It is fabulous for knocking down those wild colors of Phthalo Blue (to an indigo) Phthalo Green (muted forest green) , and dioxazine violet (muted violet, so beautiful). It doesn’t take much to get those colors. Your tip about using a drop of glycerin is good, Umbers have a tendency to dry into bricks that don’t rewet easily. Nice comparison, thanks!

Nice comparisons. I have been using the Cotman burnt umber for years but have rehomed it to my travel palette. I bought an M. Graham burnt umber for my studio palette but have yet to review it. I most certainly would try that Daniel Smith one as well.

I use davinci b. Umber, very nice Closer to the shminke. I think. Also use their natural raw umber, which is like raw sienna deep. Nice. Just bought some Mijello, gonna try that, such a nice a paint.

I have & love the Daniel Smith Transparent Brown Oxide. In my opinion, you don't have the best Burnt Umber-DaVinci's. It is gorgeous-Kimberly Crick suggested it in her favorite single pigments list.

I have Blockx, QOR and DS, burnt umber, all PBr7. My favorite is the DS which is not red like the transparent brown oxide. I prefer the chocolaty hue of the burnt umber and it mixes into a beautiful dark with Indanthrone Blue.😍

Oh this brush looks interesting. I keep forgetting Roman Szmal have a brush range. The Rembrandt version looks great here. I only have White Nights Burnt Umber and the Van Dyck Brown from Mijello, both are PBr7, warm and chocolatey. I recently tried "Transparent Oxide Umber" (multipigment) from Rembrandt, I think it is meant as a transparent alternative to Burnt Umber. It looks fine but I prefer PBr7 XD

I need to use burnt umber more. I always find myself reaching for raw umber or burnt sienna for some reason. It makes lovely darker greys etc I haven’t got used to mixing.

At first when I purchased DS transparent brown oxide it was to replace burnt sienna but after drying it looked like rust to me. The Schminke looks like many raw umber varieties if were just slightly more greenish tinged. I think out of these that I like the Rembrandt. Again DaVinci has a lovely one too.

Royal Talens Sakura has a student grade line called van Gogh and the artist grade is called Rembrandt. So there are two student grade and three artist grade in this video.

One of my favorite colors because it's easy to mix black with ultramarine, and it reminds me of dark chocolate, which is my favorite chocolate flavor. Rembrandt is quite glowy, I like it. Since my gouache set doesn't have a PBr7 Burnt Umber, I think I'll either settle for a Van Dyke Brown, a Burnt Sienna (which reminds me of milk chocolate), or mix up my own browns using Burnt Sienna as a base color.

burnt umber for me is a colour that has to work in mixes or has to fit e.g. in a landscape to the other colours. just by the plain swatches, I can't tell anything. not sure, how important it really is, that I like a certain colour swatched out just looking at it. maybe my eye is pleased with the result for many reasons. to find out, which one works for you and e.g. yours is less reddish, in case all the sudden you want for a special spot that reddish tone - how to add to the paint you have, to make it reddish without making it dull. what to add to stay transparent, what to add to go more opaque. these sort of questions alsways remain open. till one does experiment with it. isn't it?

Browns are my least favorite colors in any form of paints...But that DS one looks really nice and rich!! I only use browns to mix skintones ,so I wouldn't know what to do with them .

I like the Rembrandt burnt umber, but I actually use Da Vinci burnt umber in my 1001 palettes. I do like the color of the Daniel Smith, but I wouldn't use it in place of burnt umber. It would go in my way too many colors palette instead. lol

Okay...I'm new at learning about watercolors, how can you have only one pigment PBr7 Rembrandt & Schmincke but have two totally different colors.
@JayNathanWatercolor
@JayNathanWatercolor 2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on how the pigment is processed. For example the color could be different depending on what temperature the pigment is heated to.
