Where can i find that roller set up to spin my shells
@drumfoundry115 жыл бұрын
Mostly I was applying in a circular motion because a quilt figure has the grain opening pointing in all directions. The goal is to force dye down the grain openings. Sanding a shell too smooth closes the grain and doesn't allow good stain penetration. Sanding to 120 is plenty. Sanding sealer plus topcoat is for smoothing the surface.
@rjdrums2612 жыл бұрын
I figured it must have been something to that effect. so simple, but its absolutely genius!

- It's not paint but aniline dye stain - The finished shell is not on the site - the two dyes are black and purple - get the rollers at rockler.com - the topcoat is industrial polyester (not polyurethane). polyester is a 100% solids, high build finish used by high end guitar makers, piano makers, drum companies, etc. - because polyester is a high build finish, you don't need to sand every layer.

There are two reasons I like water better than alcohol soluble dyes. The first is that water soluble dyes are more colorfast (meaning more resistant to fade), and the other is that water soluble dyes are easier to manage once on the wood. Alcohol dries fast and if you're doing something like a burst as shown in the video, water is much easier to get a smooth transition. Depending on your topcoat process, you'll need to weigh that against the grain raising issue. Remember.. test test test!
@drumfoundry114 жыл бұрын
It is a water based stain. The plastic container has water in it used to raise the grain. We sell the stains on our website.

Hey man, after watching ur vid, i decided to stain with custom colours from the paint store i work at... its a 3 toned finish with 3 different colours with all oil applied stains and sealer... but my main concearn is the application process.. i have no clue how im going to apply the stain like you did without that conveyer type rollers ur using to spin the drum around to have a consistent and fairly easy application.

i try to avoid using water, because the moisture can get trapped under the lacquer, nice stain job tho man, quality work!!

thanks for the tip & link, and the Great Videos! if you take requests i would love to see a video of someone hand cutting edges with a router, as it would seem to be the cheapest way for me to diy a drum kit from start to finish, and i don't know of any videos really explaining the process.

Why do you wet the shell before staining. I think you said raise the grain or something. But what does it do
@drumfoundry112 жыл бұрын
No higher than 220 or 180 to keep the grain open. Always sand with the grain in a linear direction. Don't use an orbital on raw wood.
@MadShepard14 жыл бұрын
yeah i'd also like to know where ya got the rollers lol beautiful shell though
@drumfoundry115 жыл бұрын
No pre-stain. Personally I've always found a proper sanding works better. No sand paper was used between the stains, the shell might look sanded because the dye dries and lightens up. When the topcoat goes on the color will pop again.

No, because it with a high build polyester it doesn't matter. The finish is thick enough that it takes care of that.

It would have looked better if you had left it with out the black in the middle. It looked really good with the light fade in the middle. You are covering too much of the natural beauty of the wood.
