As a note, I can always appreciate vlogmas because it's very demystifying. It's nice to see you go through your regular life dumbness, because I'm sure the rest of us go through this dumbness all the time. It's just nice to see people you admire dealing with the same dumbness too.

If you want to save the carpet that's in there, get a dehumidifier or two ASAP and dry the garage out for a couple days. I went through something like this earlier in the year and basically did everything wrong because I had no idea what to do, in the end, had to have the carpet and padding tore up and redone. They said things were fine after that, but I still stress over possible mold in the walls. Water damage sucks.

As someone who has used similar types of machines for their job, be prepared to be absolutely horrified by how dirty the sucked up water will be if the carpet hasn't been cleaned in a while. You also have to be very thorough with the water suction/vacuum part, you don't want that soap to linger in the carpet. It will take a long time for the carpet to dry, but since its in the garage, you can probably open up the garage door to help ventilate the area and dry the carpet faster. Good luck!

Some advice: In the garage : never pile stuff on the floor. The water heater can leak, the hoses for the washing machine will leak. Always have rubber tubs to store things or have shelves. Go to a big hardware store and buy one of those $25 plastic pans for under the washing machine. My kitchen re modeler says he gets LOTS of work from kitchens ruined by leaking washing machine hoses or fittings. Also - open the garage door and use fans to dry the carpet.

My installer said it was the hoses. Then should be changed every few years but people often leave them for years and years. (I bought all new hoses last year).

Yo! We've had problems with soaked carpet when our dehumidifiers start to get old and don't work properly so one of the best things to do is suck up as much water as you can (like you did), get towels and attempt to dry more of it up, then leave fans on the wet area until it's completely dry! The water that gets under the carpet itself will get absorbed back up to the top over time so it's good to check back and deal with it every few hours! We've had to do this a lot and I know it's a pain, good luck with it!

Hey Dodger - You don't need to worry about how dry the carpet is when you shampoo it. You don't want it sopping wet like it was because the shampoo won't really do its job then, but you can go over it when it's still pretty damp. Also, make sure you go through and do a very thorough rinse. At work (I'm a part-time janitor) we just went to electrified water and used it exclusively on the carpets this year and the water was still soapy because of how much residue is left in the carpet.

Oh yeah, a lot of construction in LA is Wood, so bursting those bobbles could have helped, since the organic material is not a fan of moisture at all. So glad we can use masonry and concrete without worrying about earthquakes here in Denmark, statics can be hard enough without having to worry about earthquakes. I wonder what the floor slab construction is.
@DodiTov
@DodiTov 7 жыл бұрын
Slab construction in the US is reinforced concrete. Even modern basement construction reinforced poured concrete. The mid 20th was block and cement, but it posed leakage problems, so the current standard is the poured concrete.The earthquake proofing is in the joints, with teflon floaters to avoid wracking and collapse.
@aMilling
@aMilling 7 жыл бұрын
Okay, that's pretty much the same for the slab, do the US have insane U-value demands as well? For basement the most common practice in Denmark is just in insitu casted concrete walls, with some polystyrene for insulation and moisture proofing.
@DodiTov
@DodiTov 7 жыл бұрын
I am unaware of most building codes. I know these few facts because of remodeling shows. You do have to consider the differences in climate. I live in the Southern US...think Italy's climate. Much of the coding for Denmark is because of the temperature variants. None of the US, except Maine, is anywhere near the extremes that you face. The Canadians would face your climates and building challenges. For instance, my "freeze line" is only about 18cm., where my Canadian friend has a freeze line of 2 meters. But then again, my "winter" lasts about 6 weeks, not several months. It's almost Christmas, and I am still wearing summer clothes.
