5 things to do after your tooth is extracted

So you had to get a tooth extraction. You got some instructions but you probably already forgot them. Now what?
Here are five important steps to take after your extraction to get back to feeling 100% ASAP.
1-Make sure you change the gauze you were given to bite down. You can change it once it becomes soaked.
2-Ice the area 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off.
3-Take pain medication as prescribed.
4-Don’t spit, rinse, drink through a straw, chew tobacco or smoke for at least the first 24 hours and up to 3 days after your extraction.
5-Relax! Take it easy and get some rest.

Just got a tooth extracted few hours ago after a tooth canal therapy couldnt help. I was skeptical initially doing this, but to have my peace I opted for extraction. I felt no single pain at all during the process because it was numbed. Let no one scare you. That's nice, but at the other end of the spectrum, I had an extraction yesterday and it took about 2 hours because my tooth (#31 I believe) was deeply rooted. Dentist said it's the most difficult extraction he's had to do. It was quite a fatiguing, dreadful time for me, and I'm sure it was for the dentist as well.

1. I had done impacted wisdom tooth removal. I drank a bit of juice with straw in the first day. But nothing was seen in the loc like bleeding since may be there were stitches. We hope you are healing well. If you have specific questions about your extraction sites, it's definitely good to call your dental office. Generally speaking, you should brush all of your teeth that are not near the extraction site like normal but be very careful around those surgical sites. Its okay to move your jaw as long as you are comfortable doing so. Typically they do not numb the area when they take the stitches out as it only takes a couple minutes and usually the gums are comfortable. And if you feel like you need some clarity, definitely reach out to your dentist :)

Didn’t dentist give you guys a paper to follow. No blowing nose for a week…sneeze with mouth open and no rinsing the first day…soft foods only for first few days. You can eat if you can tolerate…no rice or small grainy foods first week or so. Gently rinse with salt water few times a day starting next day after extractions. I been eating since the second day. Made me some stewed chicken with potatoes. Make it soft enough you don’t really have to chew it. Turkey spam is another great choice it’s soft. Next day had some beef cubes cooked down very tender in crockpot with soft dumplings…it was amazing. You can eat just have to know what to eat and keep your mouth rinsed and clean. Downside the extraction isn’t hurting its my bottom teeth and ear canal. When you’re numb you can’t tell how much pressure they’re putting on your other teeth and mouth until numbness wears off😡. Also warned me it might effect sinus area now my ear aching😡.

thought I'd make a comment because I had mine done Monday (as I type this it is now Wednesday - so two days ago) and today my (I don't know what to call it so I'll use the way I've been explaining it) my jaw 'hinge' on the back side near where it was pulled (back bottom molar) has been tender/painful. still trying to find out if "slurping" is an issue, id imagine its not much different from a straw, but with gauze in my mouth for 2 days, im super hungry and thirsty, but since a blood clot wont form, i cant take the gauze out to eat/drink. so i put a spoon to my mouth, and "slurp" it up. also, my mouth makes a complete mouthful of saliva so i end up "slurping" it up as well. dunno how much it affects the clot, id imagine not well, but have no real alternative for drowning in saliva (and blood when its the 1st hour after changing gauze)

I got all 4 wisdom teeth taken out and it's the first day currently and no swelling and barely any pain. I feel mostly fine but I wanna know when I can start brushing and how. Like do I avoid my molars when brushing so I don't accidentally get near the sockets? And do I rinse my mouth after brushing? Also when can I eat solid foods like eggs, proteins, vegetables, etc? I just want to make sure when the blood clot is fully formed and I want to avoid dry socket.

Definitely a good idea to be as careful as possible. Always call you dentist for advice specific to you. When brushing the teeth near the extraction sites very carefully now and gently rinse with water. Typically you stay on a soft diet for a week or so but this is dependent on your specific situation and the type of extractions and whether or not there were sutures placed. No hard swishing or eating crunchy or crewy foods until you're dentist gives you the green light. Do you have a follow up visit with them?

What about kissing? Read some information that says avoid it fir the first 24 to 48 hours, mainly to prevent loss of the clot. Does kissing present a danger of infection?

that's a GREAT question. You do want to refrain from activities that could dislodge that clot as it's healing. Kissing does transfer bacteria, so technically periodontal disease and cavities are contagious

Although your own dental office is the best resources, follow the general guidelines in this video. Every situation is different and hopefully you’ll be comfortable to get rest. Take any prescribed medications as instructed to stay ahead of pain and perhaps try sleeping in a lazy boy or propped up just a bit for a few nights if needed

Generally you should eat only soft food for the first week: for example, soups, eggs, mashed potatoes, and meatloaf are fine. Typically for 2 weeks, do not eat hard, crunchy, or very chewy foods. As always, the instructions from your dentist or oral surgeon take priority since they performed the extractions if something isn't quite clear, give them a call for advice

I have a question. I had a tooth extracted and they had to cut my gum so they sewed it shouldn’t they have used dissolving thread???? because they didn’t. There was a lot of thread that I noticed and now the gums had worked over it, but there’s a little piece sticking out of the gum that irritates me.. just wanna know should they have used dissolving thread? I would think so and why didn’t they call me back to cut that thread off? I can feel the thread with my tongue sticking out thank you. This was about a year and a half ago.

Every case is different and your dentist may prefer a non resorbable over a suture that dissolves. Our best advice is to call your dentist and schedule an examination and cleaning. They will be able to take care of that stitch for you.

Although it's impossible for our team to know for sure without seeing the area, it sounds like you might have some sharp bone that needs to reshape a bit. Sometimes, little fragments get lodged in the tissue. They might come out on their own like a splinter of sorts but it's best to point that out when you see your dentist. You just want to be very careful not to forcefully spit. You more or less let water and paste fall out of your mouth. Accidentally creating a suction when you spit could cause a dry socket.
