truly, truly heaven sent... saw him sing 'american woman' live at garfield park, indpls. in. when i was a girl. sounds as beautiful live as in the studio. not too many composers, vocalists nor lyricists that can hold a candle to him today.

Back in the the 90's, i was at a Karaoke bar when a guy came in and whisper something to the Host and next thing you know Burton Cumming's was on stage. People was screaming "American woman" instead he sung "Beyond the sea". He did a excellent job but, left just as he finish singing one song. This was in Richmond BC, in Canada. He is a humble and and very easy going kinda guy, shook our hands and left.... :D

It was hard to believe this was the same guy 8 years before singing hits like American Woman No Time No Sugar Tonight New Mother Nature Hand Me Down World to name a few . Burton's heart will always be with the Guess Who . A ten year 14 album association with RCA records that I truly feel he never was able to break away from . When Burton broke up the Guess Who in September of ' 75 he was only 28 and toured the world five times with that band . God to be so young what do you do for an encore .

In 1982, when I was but fledgling in Toronto's burgeoning TV/Film industry, I worked on a movie entitled 'Melanie'. Burton played a musician (really?). Paul Servino, Don Johnson and Glyins O'Connor were also present. There was a scene in an auditorium where Burton's character Rick performed a concert. It was staged at Ryerson University's grand hall. During re-sets (camera & lighting) Burton did not just sit around in a trailer and get pampered. No, he stayed on stage and played to the 200 + crowd of extras. He kept it up for 10 hours. A true talent, gentleman and a blessing to the Canadian music scene. I still hearken back whenever I hear his songs.

Up until now, I had no idea that Burton didn’t write the song. I looked up the songwriter, and listened to his version, and I think the songwriter sounds better singing it than he does. I think Burton should’ve stuck to writing his own songs, and performing his own material, because it suits his singing and playing style better. I guess Burton had writer’s block when he made the album, so he decided to go to the “song finding machine” as he puts it to get some filler for his records.
