Been riding sideways since 91 and these are the bees knees. I think the comfort alone is worth getting them. I was one of those guys, “ah, they had Step ins 20 years ago”! Then I tried them and I was completely blown away and ate my own words. What I like about them? Boots are the comfiest I’ve ever owned, better than Vans better than 32 better than even my beloved Nike boots that I swore were he greatest boot ever made. never had BOA before and seems like I’ve been missing out. So easy to get the boot on and off. No pressure points from straps! Don’t lie, you know what I’m talking about if your a true rider. pressure points on the toes is no existent. And light! These bindings don’t weight as much as my Unions which makes my entire setup feel less weighted down. I’ve never really been a Burton guy but damn they got this done right. Check back here in 5 years and tell me I was right, these bindings and other brands to follow will change the way people connect to their boards. Great job Burton.
@grigorypostnikov93197 жыл бұрын
Great to hear the opinion of the guy that tried it out. What do you think about very unpleasant snow conditions for every binding system - wet sticky fresh snow that compresses to the ice in seconds under you boot and around it. Is this system sensitive to such issues?
@Shredderof_POWDA7 жыл бұрын
Grigory Postnikov Only experience with the actual product would be able to answer that question. I know I have struggled with any click in, step in binding from the past with snow pack, but these have an awesome concept to negate that. Can't wait to demo or pick up a pair
@Powder1487 жыл бұрын
I would say that you are gonna run into the issue in poor, wet conditions with any binding, strap or no strap. Just got back from riding today and many people asked me questions about the bindings with the most asked question about how to get your foot into the binding in deep snow. I would say you gonna have the exact same issue with strap bindings in deep snow so there is no difference. And if you think about it there’s actually less to worry about. Just think about it, I’ve had Union binding strap buckles made of magnesium snap, on the mountain, in very cold weather. I’ve had straps fall off on the mountain making me go to the ski resort shop to “fix” the strap which usually means getting a generic strap to make due. I’ve had screws pop off lost forever on the mountain. I actually saw a binding strap that fell off someone’s binding at the resort laying next to the ticket counter with a sign saying “is this yours”!!! Made me laugh!!! I told my buddy after riding 4 days so far on these Step Ons im selling all my strap bindings, my Unions, my Bent Metals they are gone. Never going back to straps. I’m telling you these are the bees knees and I don’t even like Burton! Just FYI I’ve been riding for since the early 90s so I know what I’m talking about, trust me.

This flex is ingenious and matched with my resurrected Burton Canyon 181 with a three hole mount has provided precise riding and control. Also the convenience is self-explanatory. Thanks Jake for taking the time to develop this revolutionary binding system which I have 33 days on this season to date. Cheers.

REVIEW: Just spent a week with my buddies step on setup on my board. Riding 40% park, 40% out of bounds/powder, 10% ripping straightline down the mountain, 10% other shit, at Whistler and Sunshine/Lake Lousie.. Bindings performed well in all circumstances. I did have slight issues putting them on in powder, but no more then you'd have for a strap binding, just clearing out snow under the boot. Worked well in some very cold conditions in Alberta, down to -25 C. They are just as responsive as traditional bindings in terms of board control. I didn't feel limited in what I could do, and felt comfortable with putting a lot of stress and force on them. I will say it did take a day for me to truly feel like that. The first morning I didn't throw anything more than some 3's and 5's on medium jumps, and wasn't torquing them in and out of turns at high speed. Then one run I finally felt like I wasn't pushing the binding past its limits, and I was able to start pushing my own skills again without popping a foot out accidentally. Learned how to rodeo in them, and would have felt fine trying to learn cork 7's if I had more time, so if your a park rat these are a viable option as well. All in all they function at pretty much the same level as strap on bindings. Will I personally buy these? Probably not, simply because when I went back to my old bindings and boots, I realized how much I like feeling the top strap on my foot. I just personally like feeling the strap push into my boot when I carve hard, or butter or whatever. If I didn't switch back, I probably would have got used to it completely and not notice that anymore. That being said, that is just a personal preference and I have personally recommended to a few friends and customers that they check these out when looking at new setups.

I can appreciate the trial and error of the R&D efforts when I watch this vid. The set backs. The failures. So glad Burton was the company that funded this effort and introduced something that I would consider disruptive to the industry. This tech seems legit. There will be a demographic for strap-in users, and there will be a demographic for step-on users. If the tech works just as good as strap-in, but does it in a way that saves my energy from bending over to strap-in, I am sold.

I can say the hammocks and gas pedals are under-engineered, flimsy, and easy to fall/break/lose, if they do not specificy periods of replacement of the toe clips, AND make them available then these are patently dangerous - by 65 days I could pull my rear boot out of the binding by applying less than 30lb of lift... with another lift/twist I could disengage the heel. This could happen in a big fall. Lots of talking about engineering.... But this product feels like 3d modeling prototype sent straight to market. Secure the Genesis highback with more than a single pop rivet... and plastic teeth that break... Secure the gas pedal with more that plastic teeth that release/bend/fail... I had 2 fall off/get lost and even found another guys... Reinforce the toebox seam on the photons instead of the rest of the boot being stiff and FAILING across that seam - both boots from day 40-65 failed completely. For few weeks these were great but they need work. I'm not an engineer - I'm a snowboarder.

I'm a little late to the party, but here are my 0.002 cents on these. I have a set of old-school Liquid step-on bindings that I've been using for umm, 15-20 years? Not sure, too long. I fondly remember getting dirty looks from older riders when I would just get off the lift and without stopping, click in and go. Anyway, the soles started to separate and I was frantic to find a system that kept me from having to sit on my butt and strap in. I was so spoiled by getting off the lift, clipping my toe in and then, stepping back to lock-in and go. A tube of shoe glue helped me get another season of riding with my old system and when I finally heard about the Burton system, I said, "I got to have them!" Couldn't find them. Out of stock everywhere. :( I finally found them this season, but it wasn't easy and that's not the story. I have to say, that they feel more planted than my old step-in system. I do feel more control and feedback. I'm still getting used to how this system locks in and releases. The heel in first followed by the toes is a bit tricky compared to the toe clip system. I've managed to step-on and get locked in a few times, but I usually have to sit and press down on my toes to get the side clips to lock in. Stepping out, the toe clips can sometimes stick, but that could just be me not using the correct motion. I like them and can't wait to do more riding with this system except, now my son wants a set. :)
@Logan-ge5qm7 жыл бұрын
I'm just concerned about the deterioration of toeside response with this system. You can have a packed out old pair of boots that have lost rigidity and get the response from your straps. I ride diodes and love them but feel like step ons wouldn't last. Still really cool and innovative though but I think you would have to replace your boots more often to not sacrifice performance.

Toe straps do help, but the high back does most of the work, unless you have a no back. I've ridden with broken toe straps and been fine. I do agree the toe clips probably will get loose or have more play in them over time, but so does a toe strap.
@Powder1487 жыл бұрын
Straps wear out too. I have to replace my ladder straps a lot during the season. But I ride a lot might not be a issue for people that ride a coupe times a year.

I've been using the FLow reclining HiBack bindings for years and i can not overstate the time it saves and how much of a difference it makes in the snowboarding experience to not have to ratchet in every time. It deceases fastening time by at least a factor 10. Making it actually faster usually then any of my skiing friends who need to twist the strap of their ski-poles around their wrist. I can only imagine this increasing that difference. Just step out of the lift and Goooooo!
@scottt32697 жыл бұрын
This is a great concept and I don't doubt the work that went into it. Burton is an industry leader in R&D. But don't get it twisted. The ultimate reason for this binding platform is money. Many people love Burton bindings and boards, but not their boots; or they love Burton boots, but not the bindings. With the step-on, you trap people into buying the boots AND the bindings, not one or the other. The same is true with the 3d hole pattern on older burton decks and the channel system on newer burton boards. Burton bills it as "revolutionary" and that might be true, but the real aim of systems like these is to require riders to buy all or most of their gear from burton, rather than mixing and matching. Eventually, another company will release boots that are compatible with the step-on bindings, just like they did with the 3D hole pattern and the channel system, and Burton will move on to their next "revolution in snowboarding."

A company trying to make money!!??!! What are they thinking! Bastards!
@psirus896 жыл бұрын
Youre absolutely right in everything what youve said..But what should they do instead? At some point they reach market saturation with their current products and then a company has to release new products to stay in the market. Why not being revolutionary at the same time? These are all big words, but thats how business works. If they dont reach a critical mass theyll move on with another project. Doesnt mean, the products are garbage or useless. A better click binding is not something that would be useless if you ask me. They would be alone, dominating that market and thats good business. At some point other competitors will join in, the price will drop, money for further development wouldnt be profitable, so they move on to the next project. Thats a textbook good company if you ask me. I really thought, that the video was great and personally I thought, Burton looks like a fun place to work at. Of course you dont see the stress and frustration, during all these failed prototypes. At some point some executive came in and reminded them that they have a deadline, maybe. Butat least it looked like, the engineers have a really cool job and are happy coming into work everyday, especially after the first reactions on their project. Nobody is forcing you to buy it.

These self tighten on the heel with a ratchet. When you step into any binding in powder or slushy conditions you would normally brush the snow away. No difference with this binding. The advantage with these step ons is the heel cleat has two locking positions so when there is some snow in the binding the heel still locks in and self tightens on a heel turn or on an ollie - as the snow dislodges. I live in Colorado and have been riding these for 3 seasons, 50+ days/ year and 700,000+ vert ft/ year. Not a single issue.

@coops50605 жыл бұрын
It probably doesnt, theres a reason clickers were phased out in 2000

Self tightening ratchet on the heel. You're still locked in and when the snow or slush displaces the heel locks down further. Not an issue.

WOW. Jake looks old. I first met Him in 1986 my 2nd year of snowboarding in Burlington when we were on a summer family trip. Store wasn't even open but he happened to be their and opened up for my parents and i and gave us a personal tour. Wow! They should do the same thing with skis.... oh wait.

the sucky thing about skiis is that the boots are uncomfortable as hell, thats all snowboarders benefit. so maybe we can also then make ski boots comfortable.
@shrimpfriedrice4946 жыл бұрын
The way to make ski boots comfortable is to get ones that actually fit you. Ski boots aren't uncomfortable if you get the right ones.
@strangerpainter6 жыл бұрын
@@shrimpfriedrice494 If you have ever snowboarded?...then you would know that ski boots are nowhere near as comfortable as snowboard boots. Maybe at least they can work on it.
@shrimpfriedrice4946 жыл бұрын
@@strangerpainter There are plenty of ski boots that are made to be comfortable, but they sacrifice downhill performance in doing so. A soft flexing ski boot will never have good performance. If you actually had any knowledge on the subject, you would know this

@@shrimpfriedrice494 i dont have any knowledge on this, im just saying maybe they can try to be a bit more innovative on the ski boot as well. you should never say never.

Don't get the genesis - both hammocks fell off. I'd recommend Klew. Or wait for burton to address a LOT of failings. Ask the sales person how much replacement toe clips are. Ask them why they only have a one year high back warranty... But if you are beginner, but able to stand and ride off lifts with them they are pretty cool - just carving these things fell apart.
@MrJamocity Жыл бұрын
@@trex2957 glad you said this. I've been riding for over 20 years. definitely don't want those kind of issues.
@trex2957 Жыл бұрын
@@MrJamocity yeah I heard from Burton what happened to me very unusual, that all these parts can be replaced, that they have or know some other person that used these a lot no problem...But I genuinely wonder if anyone has used these much... Most users get a 7-14 days a year. I got 75 days last season. My xp was lost gas pedal by day 20, replaced and tied down the new one or would have lost again. Left hammock lost by day 30. Right hammock lost by day 50. These are integrated to the highback so need a whole new highback. Goodluck if outside a year (one year on highback). No response from EU Burton despite promises and 6-8 weeks trying.. Boot toe seams starting to fail day 40. By day 70 both toe seams completely gone. Day 50-70 rear toe clip increasingly unreliable. By day 70 rear toe cip releasing with light upward pressure. Any heel turn releasing toe, but heel stayed locked. Snow trapping under the boot toe during riding... I'm checking out flow or clew because I did like the off the lift ease.

Got some brand new never worn rental photons, bindings, and board earlier. Cannot wait to pick them up next week and try them out. Tried one boot on during the rental, stepped in and heard all the clicks, already hooked. 👌✌👌
@trex2957 Жыл бұрын
How'd you go on those? MY brand new photons fell apart by day 65. The toe box is unreinforced and basically sheared off from the forces being applies to the boot because of the toe clips. Could see the seams unraveling from day 40. I'm guessing these get ridden more by early intermediates that aren't doing the kind of aggressive carving and skids on ice I like... and maybe only for a week or two each season.
