I’ve gotten the question a LOT of how these burton step on snowboard bindings have held up after 2 seasons of riding. How the wear and tear was, if it would change how they functioned and how I still liked them. So I’m this video I break down how I feel about the Burton Step On Snowboard bindings 2 years later and show how they’ve held up through all the snowboarding and abuse I’ve put them through!

It’s just impractical for the average rider that doesn’t have that kind of money for some bindings that do the exact same thing for almost double the price in most cases. If I were to give any advice to anyone I would just buy normal strap on bindings. I think there mid tier but its your money to waste so do what you want but you could get bindings ten times better for the same price.

And for the fact that you need the exact boots and bindings that are matching to even ride them is stupid and makes it even more impractical.

Hi Alex, YT recommended this video and I checked it out and wanted to share my experience after a full season with this setup roughly about 40+ days on the mountain. Issues: 1. One of the BOA dials on my photon boot popped off and broke. It was while I was riding and I didn't hit anything so not sure what happened there but it was easily fixed, although I had to work directly with BOA instead of Burton 2. On one occasion, while trying to step onto the binding, my balance was slightly off and I stepped on one of the toe hooks. I have the second generation that has a separate piece to reduce the clicking noise and when I accidentally stepped on the toe hook, it broke the plastic piece. I was able to continue snowboarding with a single toe hook and the boot never popped off but Burton recommended that I don't do that... I think that may be lawyer talk. The customer service from Burton was fantastic and although I could have easily fixed it myself with spare parts, they would not ship me spare parts but I had to ship the binding to them for them to fix. A little annoying but the speed was amazingly fast Other than the issues above, I love the set up. I never had a proper strap setup so can't speak to the responsiveness but one thing I love about the bindings are how lightweight they are and the compactness for a clean look. I may try the new Nidecker Supermatics at some point if I get multiple boards but my feet fit well in Burton boots so step ons will continue to be my primary.
@BoardsBikesAndHikes
@BoardsBikesAndHikes Жыл бұрын
Dang! That’s weird about the BOA, Myself and my 2 friends all have the photons and haven’t ever had any issues. Heck I’ve only ever used boa boots and never seen that. That’s weird! Ya that’s one downside to the “newer” generation ones, I saw a lot of people actually had the toe clip break off really easily. I luckily never ran into any issues( I had the previous gen in this video as well as the new) They definitely are way lighter and between the 2 bindings I can for sure feel the weight difference vs regular bindings. Plus I think they just look good with no straps haha. Also look into the CLEW as well, Ive been using them this season so far and they actually ride really well and offer the best of both worlds with step ons and traditional bindings. I’ve really enjoyed them so far! Thanks for sharing your feedback as well and I’m glad both issues got wither out for you! It’s great to hear both Burton and even boa have great customer service!

I got a set of photons with genesis step ons and am in absolute love with them. And i dont mean just because of ease of entry but the actual feel of them. I have bad circulation in ny feet but i love fast response so when i use straps i need to crank the blood out of my feet to get the response i want. The step ons allow me to have the boot medium tight and distribute the pressure across the whole boot instead of just 2 straps. I have the same response with absolute comfort. Absolutely in love.

I was looking at some rear entry bindings for a new setup I'm treating myself to but was able to try the step-ons for a day and they won me over. I'm a penny pincher but even the steep entry cost couldn't keep me away after trying them. One thing I will say is the most important part are the boots. There was no performance difference between the different bindings in my opinion. Any difference I think results from an excellent marketing campaign from Burton helping people develop a confirmation bias.

So nice to hear about it. Can you tell me are Flow bindings still popular / used? I am actually using a flow binding (a less expensive one) and its good but difficult to put the foot in, I have to really make them loose to get in and out comfy and quickly, but I trade control and have my foot too loose this way. I'm considering the burton step-ons for the next season
@BoardsBikesAndHikes
@BoardsBikesAndHikes Жыл бұрын
I think the most popular options seem to be the burton step ons, CLEW and now the Nidecker supermatics. The supermatics are basically a redesign of the flow(Nidecker bought flow from what I’ve heard) and I’ve watched a lot on them and they seem really awkward to get into, that’s how I always thought the flows might be just from watching others use them. The burton step ons are fantastic and i really enjoyed them, I honestly have nothing bad to say about them. I’ve been testing the CLEWS this season just to see how they stack up and honestly they’ve been really really good. Slightly faster entry than the burton step ons(I can click in coming off the lift) but you still have the option to use straps and they fit ANY boot which is really nice.

@@BoardsBikesAndHikes Thank you so much man. As much as I love how the CLEW's look and what they provide it seems like a small company with limited stock (in Europe, Poland) they were available but aren't anymore. The Burton STEP ON's I could get right here, right now, probably easier to troubleshoot and maintain if anything goes south , locally. With the CLEW's this won't be possible. I know this almost never happens but I'm strongly considering something I can get here, which isn't limited. Also burton is huge and I can easier fix and find parts just in case. I'm riding like 3-4 days a year so practically should last for 10 years haha. I'm just worried because I was always riding loose with little flex and my left ankle is a little damaged and always hurts after 2 days riding. I'm considering something stiffer and with less flex than my Flow setup, this is how I ended up on your channel :)

How many days total do you think have you put on step ons? I eventually had the heel clip get lose because the foam in the foot bed compressed over time which caused some heel lift when turning as there was a few mm of play between heel lock and latch. I fixed it with some foam on heel but wonder if you ran into anything similar? I didn’t really notice it until second season on them after maybe 70-80 days on them.

Just curious about your choice on the wide boot. I haven't ridden burton boots in awhile and back in the day they didn't make a wide option. So are the regular boots narrower now or are the wide boots just extra wide? I'm a size 15 and nobody stocks anything that big so i need to try and figure it out before ordering in case it doesn't fit well. Thanks
@BoardsBikesAndHikes
@BoardsBikesAndHikes 3 ай бұрын
Ahhh gotcha. So my reason for going wide was I had heard with the step on boots a lot of times were giving people a pressure point or weird pain where the step on points were. I had heard if you went wide this wouldn’t be an issue so I went wide without ever trying the narrower option. And they were super comfortable and I never had an issue. My 2 buddies also did the same with their boots as well. None of us typically wear a wide in other boots or regular shoes just for reference.

Great video, Alex. Question: should the binding lift slightly above the board deck when pressuring the toe side? I just bought Genesis Step Ons (size XL) and size 13 Photon boots. I ride a duck stance (for switch) with 18 degree angle front and rear. I have tried two different sets of screws to mount the bindings to a Burton board with the channel system, and yes: the screws are very tight.. Using the set of screw holes further back helped reduce this lift issue. Just wondering if you had run into this at all, and if so, what the solution could be. Thanks.

Thanks for the comment! I’m sorry to hear that. That’s weird. I can’t say I’ve ever ran into that issue. And I have no idea what could cause that. I’ve heard of some people have “heel lift” issues but mine never did. And you’re using the standard screws that come with the binding 🤔

I've been riding on StepOn for 4 years now.. I'm nor expert, I'm more like intermediate snowboarder, so won't see the fine difference between that and the others. But I love, makes easiers and is really tied to the board. The only thing that I really don't like, or at least couldn't figure it out yet, is how to step out if you ended up on a sitting position OR, even worst, if you are in the 1 foot snow. If you get stuck there, oh boy you are in trouble. Again, not expert and perhaps is my lack of experience, steping out while sitting, I don't see how. Perhaps with a litte more experience I won't be falling as much so that won't be a problem :P

No problem at all with snow in there. From the start a great FEELING system. Snow will get under the gas pedal and that will fall off and Goodluck getting hold of Burton to get a relacement. So maybe shock cord that down if you buy do it can't fall off at least... I did get snow under foot (and very quickly) but not till end of the season (70 days) when the toe clips were failing with any turns and my foot lifting up. But by that stage the gas pedal had fallen off 2x both highback hammocks had snapped off, the entire toe section of both photon boots had disintegrated... So yeah a bit of snow was a minor issue - the fact my toe clip released on every heel turn was more worrying. Find out how easy it is to get replacement toe clips before buying. And replace them before you have an injury...

Hey Yall! I just got myself a pair of Burton step-ons for the first time, and I have a lot of positives just in the few days of riding I've gotten in. At first, it was hard to get the back boot clicked in properly while moving but that's becoming muscle memory. The responsiveness is noticeably different than the standard method of binding, my carving and general control at low and high speeds greatly improved. I'd argue my skill at jumping and getting air has improved as well with this setup in just a few days... However. I have one thing that keeps bugging me. I notice a slight click when I rock from heel to toe, it wouldn't concern me but it does feel like my heel is raising ever so slightly. I'm talking millimeters but I do notice it carving on groomers and smooth terrain. Has anyone else who has ridden the step-ons noticed this? if so, did you find it to be an issue? It's early season where I'm riding so I haven't gotten many chances in fresh snow, I'm theorizing I wouldn't notice it with more snow on the ground. Let me know! Thanks!

How does the sizing hold up after all that time? I tried to go down a full size (11.5 wide to 10.5 wide) and couldn't stand being in them for more than an hour, so I'm going to only go half a size down to keep that feeling of my toes touching the end of the boot, except with a size that isn't cutting off my circulation. I was told at my closest burton store that they only really pack out a quarter of a size at most, but since you've actually used them for a couple of years I'd really love to know if the size truly does mostly hold up

I’m honestly not sure, I would have to measure🤔I would think if they’re that uncomfortable you might want a different size but I’m not sure. How many days riding do you have in them? @BoardsBikesAndHikes I haven't had a chance to ride in either size yet unfortunately, but I figured if I couldn't stand being in the smaller boots while sitting on a couch in the comfort of my own home, I wouldn't be able to stand being in them while on a mountain 😅 I bought a second pair that are half a size up and they feel comfortably snug. A little uncomfortable, though they're right out of the box. When just standing upright I feel 2-3 toes up against the front of the boot, but if I sit down, tilt my toes to the sky, and press my heel down into the floor I can only really feel my big toe barely scratching the front of the boot - do you reckon that's a fine fit still?
@BoardsBikesAndHikes
@BoardsBikesAndHikes 7 ай бұрын
@@vinluman that sounds a lot better to me. That’s about how mine were. My big toe and second toe would just barely touch the end and after a few days riding just my big toe would barely barely touch the tip every now and then and that’s pretty much how they stayed.

I’m not the biggest park rider, I’ll hit the occasional flat box and some of the more squared off rails. But I will say the dampening on these is really great for getting on and off of the features. The only thing that I did notice is where it is a super responsive binding, where you’re directly connected to it you lose some of that tweak ability, so you have to be very precise.

I didn’t think it was too bad, but you did have to be a bit more precise. I actually liked it on rails but noticed on jumps sometimes I had to be spot on with my landings. I did 76/83 straight days in Austria. These things are pretty junk. Both hammocks came off (they're held on by a single pop rivet and two plastic teeth),. The toe clips (rear) wore down becoming less reliable for entry and ultimately releasing during riding. The gas pedal (under foot) falls off because it's only retained by little plastic teeth. Happened 2x to me and I found someone else's on the mountain... The Photon boots fell apart completely across both toe boxes. This is because they stiffened the whole boot and then relied on unreinforced double stitching at the toe seam. If you carve and want more than 40-5 days forget these. If you are true beginner and want maybe 4-5 seasons doing only a week or two each season then yeah these are good. As long as you have the balance to take advantage of the entry system... And never progress your riding...

Well, I wouldn't recommend them to anyone but a beginner or very early intermediate... As a beginner you will not be applying the forces that these (imo) cannot actually withstand. Only downside is if you start carving and applying real pressure to these and the boots you might end up looking to replace them as they completely fall apart.
