TransMilenio is a bus rapid transit (BRT) system that serves Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, and Soacha. The system opened to the public in December 2000, covering Caracas Avenue and 80 street. Other lines were added gradually over the next several years, and as of 2022, 12 lines totalling 114.4 km (71 mi) run throughout the city. It is part of the city's Integrated Public Transport System (Sistema Integrado de Transporte Público [SITP] in Spanish), along with the urban, complementary and special bus services operating on neighbourhoods and main streets.

It is clear that Bogotá does not have the best transportation system since it uses BRT lines as a base as mass transport. However, if we evaluate it as an isolated system and ignoring the deficiencies it has to face, it is enviable the great passenger capacity and efficiency it has. Obviously, there are better transport alternatives, more sustainable and aesthetic, but the Tranmilenio took the BRT a step further where no similar system has equaled it.

Bogota is like transjakarta but on a much bigger scale. Here in jakarta we only have BRT to combat the traffic not really for the efficiency because normal bus lanes wouldnt be respected by driverd

man those super long 3 part articulated buses are so awesome; really blurs the line on functionality between bus and light rail. Clearly this was the more affordable option for the city, but I really hope those lines can be converted into Light Metro eventually. Regardless, awesome system, with really great stations too

A cidade de Curitiba tem esse serviço desde os anos 1980. Bogotá inspirou -se em Curitiba.

Superlative buses, awesome video. Next time you visit South America, you should take a while in a very cute city named Curitiba, in Brazil. Curitiba is a pioneer in bus rapid transit., and they have inspired other BRT around the world. You won't regret a visit.

Your excellent video does rather show a drawback of double-articulated buses. The buses do rather bounce around. Although I am British, I have ridden on a lot of double-artic buses. This is mostly in Switzerland, where all the large cities have some. (In Luzern and St Gallen they are the backbone of the public transport.) I have also ridden on double-artics in Utrecht (Netherlands), Gothenburg (Sweden) and Linz (Austria). In all cases I do find the ride in the middle section relatively uncomfortable.

Great video! I finally got a chance to scratch this system off my bucket list! I stayed at a hotel right at the end of the Calle 26 corridor, steps away from Portal El Dorado, but much of my footage was along Eje Ambiental, Avenida Caracas, Autopista Norte and NQS Central. I primarily used TransMilenio to get around.

Did you find it safe? One of the main complaints about Transmilenio is that it can be unsafe
@cleanairbus

@@nicolasisquithcarreno9692 I found it relatively safe, but I was forewarned by the staff at my hotel about the dangers (mainly pickpocketing, groping), and I took some safeguards in order to successfully obtain footage.

Nice system. Double articulated buses. I favor electric powered trams and the city should have them instead of buses. Less pollution and noise. Thanks Tim💚👌

There were some projects in Bogotá to build subways and trams but it wasn't possible due to political reasons and corruption. Most of that long buses work vehicular natural gas (scania euro6) and shorter buses are electric and diesel powered

Enrique peñalosa one of the former mayor said tram and subway doesn't move the same amount of people than transmilenio buses do, he's the main reason that Bogotá has no subway

Thank you Timothy for an extremely interesting video. I would echo the question 'What did you think of the BRT in Bogota, compared to others that you've been on?'. I am British, and I have seen a suggestion from a British transport writer that the Bogota BRT is an example to the rest of the world. One obvious criticism is that the buses are all diesel.
@juancarlosvargaslagos175
@juancarlosvargaslagos175 Жыл бұрын
Correctión, the buses were diesel, right now, Transmilenio has at least, half of it´s fleet moved by GNC with euro VI emissions standart, on decemeber 2023 will left other 200 diesel buses, planed to be replaced with electric articulated and bi articulated buses.

@@edwardmiessner6502these rail tracks were used during the first half of the XX Century, and they were the main transport system in the city back then, but in April 8th 1948 the murder of the presidential candidate Jorge eliécer gaitán changed the history of the city, the "Bogotazo" devastated 3/4 of the city, including the trams that never recover from that day... They were burnt, all of them, and Bogotá never used trams or trains to transport people again until nowadays. Regards

I've been on the MBTA Silver Line from the Airport to South Station in Boston and back and compared to the Trans Milenio, the Silver Line is a joke! No two ways about it. I do have a comment about the TM though. They use diesel double bendy busses and the diesel engines plus the heavy traffic on the boulevard are LOUD! I wish they used trackless trolleys instead, those at least are somewhat quiet, like Montreal's metro.
