Great job Mick. Great videos. However I wish you could show how you fitted the temp and oil senders. And the rpm wire at the ecu. Please help. Thanks mate

Just watched the whole series. Very thorough for one that has spent years getting greasy on Type I, II, IV and most recently a Thing. Great video, great editing and very informative. Just put a 1.9 liter VW in my Thing and have no expectations of a Subaru update, but have always loved the engine swap vids on KZbin. When I had my '79 Campmobile I had dreams of a Wankel in it with a turbo. Like John Muir (of VW fame, not the naturalist) said, "If you want a car that drives like a Porsche, buy a Porsche" but the Bus has always had a HP deficit and I get putting a little more go in the back. Great series. Thanks!

Thanks for the compliments. I, too, love engine swaps in general. I've been specifically interested in Megasquirt controlled turbo swaps lately - fascinating stuff. Dream on my friend!

Did you ever consider using the old block off plate and screws to make a mount? It looked like you might possibly be able to cut out the center of the plate to the size of the rear housing and have enough left to catch the bezel and pinch mount it using the original mounting screw locations. Might need slightly longer screws. Hard to tell from the video if the block off plate is large enough to have enough meat left over.

Thanks Mick, wish I did have the obd2 connector, but my engine was a couple of years behind when that was introduced. Thanks for responding mate can't wait to see yours on the road, thanks JP

Thanks Mick, I did a bit more research and can see that the signal will come from the temp sensor as you described , I don't have any temp gauges on my splity so need to make sure the temp can be monitored. Thanks very much for your swift responses. :)

Hey Jon Paul, since you have an OBD2 engine you should get an Elm 327 wifi interface that works with a smartphone or tablet, then get an app so that you can have digital gauges. This would be temporary but very inexpensive and nearly immediate.
@draggonhedd10 жыл бұрын
hey for the multigauge, try using a silicone boost coupler and a couple of T clamps to hold it up. Slip the boost coupler over the back of the gauge hole, clamp it down, and then slip the gauge into the silicone tube and clamp it in as well.

That's another good idea. I like out-of-the-box thinkers.

Wish you lived in Kitchener as I'm baffled by the wiring and deleting air bags and all the other unessential wiring that I dont need to run my car. Reading a wiring diagram is just a mind f! Want to come for a trip to Ontario and stay and make some cash money to sort me out on this rig!Lol

Hi.Nice vid.Just bought the gauge.Could you tell us the wiring of the gauge,Which wire goes to which connection?Cheers.
@Busaru10 жыл бұрын
Hey Monk, The gauge should have come with a single page wiring diagram. Find your temp sensor, and oil pressure wires on the Subaru engine and connect. Tach comes from the computer and is different on different year Subaru's. Good luck!

I think you said you may cover the heater in a future video but I can't remember. I live in Ohio where we can get freezing winters so I'm just wondering about that. Love the progress so far! Can't wait until the next vid!

Yes, I'm going to cover a heater install but need to sort that out first. Thanks for the compliments!

Thank you for that info, also is there a list anywhere I can get for the places, all the tbr adaptor/ radiators/ transmission fitting you used, Were do they make that stuff at? don't remember seeing anything about it in the videos
@Busaru10 жыл бұрын
Sure do! Since you can't buy this stuff in the US I made some of the bus specific parts and am offering them at busaru.com --> Busaru Parts. There are things like engine adapter and exhaust manifold that need to be purchased from Kennedy Engineered Products. I'm hoping to show that in an upcoming video.

Hi Mick, great video. For the coolent temp did you get the signal from the ECU and in that case was there a variation from the temp read with the obd2 tool (read using an app on the phone)? I’m noticing a slight variation around 7 degrees Celsius. I’m wondering if you faced this and how you handled it.

Loving the series so far Mick! Was wondering if you've ever seen any swaps done with the eg33? If it fits it would be a pretty awesome NA powerplant for a bus. Can't wait for the next episode.
@Busaru10 жыл бұрын
Good to hear from you man! I did an eg33 swap into a Subaru RS2.5 coupe. It was a pretty interesting swap as the car is so tiny. I have a friend who uses the EG33 in a Syncro Vanagon and its a super tight fit. Incredibly stout engine though - I think there are 7 main bearings in a span of 21 inches or so (to put in perspective, Chevy and the like use 4 or 5 in a much larger engine). At roughly 240 HP its a good, inexpensive, swap but I'd probably go WRX Turbo up here in the mountains :)
@runboyrun10 жыл бұрын
How is the fitment with a turbo in picture for a bus? seems like you would need to do some extra fab work. would make for a pretty sweet sounding bus for sure.
@Busaru10 жыл бұрын
runboyrun The turbo would have to be relocated in a bus but they fit well in Vanagons as long as there are precautions taken to deal with the heat that a turbo generates.

Hey how you doing loved the videos, I just purchased a 68 bay window and live in Vegas and really want to do this conversion due to the heat here, was wondering a few things, Do you make the harness and sell them? Can a A/C unit be installed into the bay also my bay as of now has no trans would a Subaru trans be a easy option or do I need to go with a VW trans?? cant wait to get my project going
@Busaru10 жыл бұрын
The 68 would be a sweet conversion. I would definitely email Tom Shiels about the wiring harness (just google and you'll find him). A/C could probably be installed under the rear seat using the Subaru equipment but this hasn't been proven (at least to my knowledge). I'm hoping to put something together in the future regarding this. I would go with the VW transmission for now, but SubaruGears offers a kit to convert to a Subaru transmission, its just pricey in my opinion - it may be worth it to you though.

Hi Mick, can you do a video on which terminals you connected the wires to the computer. Any help appreciated! Thanks Jon
@Busaru10 жыл бұрын
Hey Jon, can you expand on your question a little? Are you curious about the connections for the gauge or for the entire wiring harness?
@koryzeller15609 жыл бұрын
Hey Mick, thanks for the videos, they are super helpful! So I picked up this gage for my EJ22 - air cooled conversion and tried mounting the oil pressure sender in the stock position on the block under the alternator, but it interfered with the alternator. I looked all over for another port but couldn't find one. Is this where you mounted your sender?
@Busaru9 жыл бұрын
Hey Kory, That's where I mounted mine but you're right, the sending unit is too big to mount vertically, you have to either get a 90* bend and attach or use a tee fitting which will allow you to also run the stock Subaru oil pressure switch to your oil indicator lamp on your dash.
@Busaru9 жыл бұрын
So I dug a little further and found that in my engine prep video you can see the Tee that I used. Its about 13 minutes in on this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZamiKuOntBnaMk

On the ecu I can identify the temp terminal for example, can I just insert the temp wire from the gauge to get it to work, with 12v power also, any risks of frying the ecu? Thanks mate
@Busaru10 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon, the wiring of the gauge is pretty simple and only interfaces with the ECU for the tachometer. The gauge comes with a water temp sending unit and an oil pressure sending unit, these then connect from the engine to the gauge. If I were you I would try to find a service manual for your Subaru engine that has a wiring diagram. This will help with identifying the tachometer signal wire at the ECU.

Hey Matt, thanks for the comments on this and the other videos. This gauge is actually an eBay special. Its a multi gauge with voltmeter, coolant temp, oil pressure, RPM, and shift light. See the video description for where to get it on eBay.

Hi Mick, please can you help me with some advice. Does this gauge work directly from the ECU signal wire? I tried another gauge and it was not compatible with the signal wire. I like the fact that this is a multi gauge. I see you have to use an adaptor to connect the oil pressure sensor and that it comes with oil and water temp sensors. Do these have to be fitted in addition to the sensors that go to the ecu? Any advice would be appreciated , cheers Mark
@Busaru9 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, I've decided that I don't really like these gauges too much. They aren't extremely accurate. Any gauge you select will use senders - for example, the water temp and oil pressure senders need to be installed for that particular gauge. The tach signal from the ecu is the only thing that doesn't need a sender.

Hey Jessica, the gauge is NOT compatible with the Subaru oil pressure switch. The gauge comes with an actual pressure sender that you use in place of, or in conjunction with, the Subaru pressure switch.
