Bad fuel injectors, dusted and worn turbo, wrong engine oil, k&n air filter, lots of codes. One step at a time.

If you are not racing, you do not need K&N air filters. Everything has a time and a place and with the cost of HD engines and components, the increased airflow does not pay for liners, valves, and turbos. Always great to watch you guys go through troubleshooting issues. Great work!!!

While spending a winter at Del Pueblo RV resort in Yuma; a beautiful newer 43 ft'r came into the park belching and smoking while barely able to keep running. I went over to give the guy a hand opening up the engine bay doors only to find the whole engine bay was chock full of blown in sand from him leaving the thing sitting for months out at the Imperial Sand Dunes. The sand was so tightly packed into that bay you couldn't do a thing. I asked him if it had given him any over-heat warnings and his answer was "yes but I ignored those because it hadn't run for so long I thought it was just being temperamental." The coach could probably be repaired but there was no hope at all for the stupid owner.

Well Scott and Tyler, y'all have started something wonderful for the bus and RV world. The more of these Wonderlust coaches you work on, the more I'm starting to like them. Had no idea how popular they are in the RV world. I'm thrilled that you are able to address maintenance and repair issues and failures and return these coaches to near perfect mechanical condition. I'm on vacation in the Ozarks right now and up the road by the Christ of the Ozarks is a few RV campgrounds with a few of these RV coaches on site. They had some kind of motorcycle rally or show or something this past weekend.

Nice bus. Too bad many owners don't know how to run and care for what is in essence a heavy duty diesel vehicle. It ain't your Ford Escort. I think ALL motorhome buyers need to take a basic class in heavy diesel maintenance, even if they don't do any service themselves, so they know what to ask at the shop and not be taken. A CDL class might not be a bad idea too. An over-the-road commercial bus is this size and requires a CDL, yet an RV is allowed to be driven by anyone. There is a lot to know. The dealers don't do a good job. Most just show you where to put the key and how to work the sewage dump valve. As you say in the video, many shops don't know all the details of working on what is really an 'antique' since most of the old guys who worked on this stuff have retired by now.

The same people that allow people operating heavy RV's with just a regular old Driver's License are the same people that work overtime keeping RV'ers from parking overnight in Walmart parking lots. They are on a mission to ban vintage RV's and converted Bus's from camp grounds. One day sooner or later those people will get what's coming for them eventually. Some Politician or famous person driving his RV will end up crashing it in a huge way killing a bunch of people that will cause a major investigation and a once family members learn about the lack of proper training and qualified licensing the results will be epic.

When I worked at Blue Bird, I was amazed. I remember there was one of these large WLs parked next to about a 25 foot (reasonably short) school bus. I asked: "So, I need to get a CDL with all the testing, etc. to drive this (point at school bus,) but I can hop in this big thing (point at WL) and drive off with just my license? " "Yes. It's an RV." "That's crazy."

@@excavatoree Especially air brakes. How many pump the brakes going down a hill like they do in their cars and wonder why they can't stop at the bottom? People should have to be trained and licensed based on the size of the vehicle and the equipment it has. They don't need to train like they are a gasoline tanker, but they should have to prove they know how to drive and care for their larger machine.
@n4zou
@n4zou 3 жыл бұрын
@@excavatoree It's harder to get a Moped or Motorcycle license today than to drive a huge RV with air brakes. With Motorcycles you've got to take an additional written test and run a safety course on a motorcycle they provide. Many States mandate a motorcycle safety course in addition.

I’m pretty sure the leading edge of the turbo impeller is corroded, not sand-blasted. Perhaps starting fluid, or just time....

Since everyone is trashing K&N I wanted to add my 2¢ because... well mostly cuz I am an senile ahole and a K&N was original equipment on a Still 045 Pro chainsaw I purchased. I loved that saw and the K&N filter. Cleaning the filter is almost mandatory everytime you use it and I would clean mine anytime I sharpened the teeth. My old Still had a 3-4" square air filter which consisted of a screen covered with some fuss. I can't remember what the cleaning proceedure was for the old saw but I think it involved soaking in solvent and an air compressor to blow dirt off neither of which are convenient in the woods. Sure you have your mix and you could cut bottom of gallon container to soak it in but owner manual specifically warned not to scrape or brush off the filter. I don't know what they expected you to do in the field but the 15-20 minutes it took me to touch up the. teeth wasn't long enough of a soak to clean the filter. I used my worn out tooth brush to help it along but after a short time I could tell that I was compromising the filter. The K&N was huge and with the folded nature of it's construction had probably ten times the surface area. It also had this elastic foam band that fit around the oval shaped filter housing that acted as a pre- filter. In the field just pulling off this pre-filter and slapping against my leg a couple times and it was good to go. I would clean the rest of filter a couple times a year but it was never very dirty. Besides the convenience I can't qualify on it's effectiveness other than it was still running almost 20 years after I purchased it when it burned up in a wildfire along with the rest of my possessions. Almost grabbed it as a tool we might need to escape but decided to leave it because my girlfriend finally appeared and I was so thankful that I didn't have to drag her out of the house and we had all our animals in the vehicle. Didn't want to grab something for fear she would think of something to grab and leave the vehicle. As it was we escaped with only 5 minutes to spare. Sorry I degress. Anyways K&N. also useful in dirty environments where you have to service air filter more frequently because you can clean and use it for life of vehicle which might not be very long unless you oil properly. They shouldn't sell the filter without the oil. Might be part of the reason for the bad rap.

A tiny chain saw. You don’t have a clue how much air is moving through a detroit diesel 8v92TA. K&N just can’t filter it, at those volumes too much dirt gets sucked through.

Always a good video. The ending is gold. I am curious. If the turbo was sandblasted, wouldn't the cylinders/pistons be dusted too and if so, how would that affect power/reliability?
@BusGreaseMonkey

Praying that it’s not. There is no smoke and other signs of worn out rings. Obviously wear will be there and long term longevity greatly reduced but still life left we hope
