The engine rebuild is going forward in this yacht. Rebuilding the engine in the hull is a tight fit and a very difficult job. The yacht owner is helping do a lot of the work himself including cleaning and setup. We are assisting him a day or two a week on this project. Fingers crossed that the o-rings seal properly. If they don’t seal this whole project will be for naught.

Working in a marine engine room is such a pain! I made sure to purchase a yacht where I had access to all sides of the engines. But just because you can get your hand on a part and touch it doesn't mean you can get a wrench on it and turn it! Great work as always.

The one silver lining to this job is that the owner doesn't care about the interior because it's all getting redone anyway. I could see BGM turning down the job if this was a pristine yacht that had to be kept spotless while the repairs were going on.

I remember when I was young I worked on a sightseeing boat during the summer in Chicago. They used to do tours on Saturday mornings once a month of the south branch of the river system. We sucked a super charger and had to run on one motor back to Chicago main branch. Cummings came out on a weekend and holiday at that. Worked in the engine room cleaning out the junk from the cylinders. What an experience as I was his gofer that weekend.

Many an engine has been built on the kitchen or dining room table. Not many have been built on the master bed on a yacht - that engine should be proud of the treatment it is being given.

Back in the day, on 855 Cummins engines, when the lower receivers or the upper counterbore were pitted to the point that it was questionable, we used JB weld to fill and smooth out the areas that we thought might be an issue. It used to be a very common practice. I can't count how many I took apart that had a JB weld fix and had no issues with the filler falling out or degrading.

One of my favourite authors has a couple of book series which talk a fair bit about boats. In both examples, a central character has seriously negative opinions on Volvo marine diesels, at least about their maintenance access. I can't help making comparisons when watching this saga. From your other videos, I'm glad I'm not a bus mechanic, and now, even more, that I'm not a marine mechanic. My admiration for your ingenuity and dedication continues to grow.

Total professionalism all the way down to the plastic tubing over the connecting rod threads and generous use of high quality assembly lube. Careful attention to silicone water jacket o-rings and no coolant leaks means this ocean-going beauty may soon perform to original specifications and expect a long life! According to the Parker O-ring Manual, please allow 48 hours for o-rings to fully seal into static grooves before pressure testing.

Over the years I've overheard conversations from ex Navy mechanics. Generally the most advantageous route for removal and reinstallation is through the deck plate. Old engine out, new engine in, welded deck plate. Out to sea they can't take the down time.

One of my friends was a top-notch marine diesel mechanic. Some of his stories of on-site engine work on crabbers, tugs and long-liners out in Dutch Harbor and Unalaska were torturous adventures to say the least. Stuff ALWAYS seems to break when the weather is at its worst, and of course that's when he had to fly in to do the work. He got paid really, really well, but Man did he earn it!

I'm still amazed that the boat was built without the facility to remove the engines. Ships are built that way, but the engines are built inna way that enables most major repairs to be done in situ. If an engine really has to come out, it is relatively simple to cut through the hull and replace it.

Diesel Engines will run for several hundred thousand miles when properly maintained but when they are let go it’s like opening up Pandoras Box and you better have a pro like Scott and Johnathan or you have no chance of getting a positive repair! People don’t realize on these yachts the engines are all put in before the upper part of the boat is fabricated ! I have been in a boat yard at West Palm Beach in Florida and watched them cut a hole on each side of the boat with a Chainsaw to get the motors out! That is the way they all are built about 50-60 feet ! It’s something to watch but when they are re-fabricated you would never know what was done ! That’s where big bucks are Spent !

That is a hard job. Me I would have dry docked the boat cleaned the hull and have a crew come and dismantle the upper portion of the boat and remove the engines and send them to you for a complete reman. I do not like the pitting on the Block you showed it may work now but later it may start leaking under heavy use. The block in my opinion looked pretty rough based on your photos. That is a 200k boat I hope he got a very good deal considering the other engine the same rebuild will have to be made on that one as well. Just my own opinion. Those repairs are very expensive. It is a very nice boat really nice. A good piece of History.

Great question Gerard the 2 strokes are slightly different but generally you measure the top of the sleeve flange and the top of the block that measurement must be .45 - .50 below the surface of the deck for each cylinder they all need to be within .002 of each other or the block will need to be resurfaced and shimmed you can see they did use shims under the sleeves.

@dougnorton5143
@dougnorton5143 7 күн бұрын
@@BusGreaseMonkey Here's my thinking for my comment. With the condition of the block surfaces where the seal is expected to seal the coolant, the rough surface condition will wear down the seal due to the roughness in short order due to the expanding and contracting of the liner. Now that is just speculation on my part but seems like a reasonable assumption to me. But from where I sit, you and your crew seem to be taking all the measures you can to make this repair a success!

Scott, Long time subscriber here. So I can understand this. You pull a vacuum on the wrist pin covers so the assembly doesn't lose oil pressure. How does the wrist pin get its lubrication? I didn't see any feed holes on the upper rod bearings. Does it feed from around the rod bolts then?
@K5ALLEN
@K5ALLEN 7 күн бұрын
Because Detroit 2 stroke pistons have rings at the top and bottom of the piston. The space in the middle is the wrist pin. It is lubed from below by the cooling jets of oil. If the pin caps are not sealed it will suck the oil from the cooling jets through the pin into the combustion causing it to burn oil, . I hope this helps
