My grandfather flew bush planes in the Canadian north after the war. Those guys were epic heros.
@52SquadronBand4 күн бұрын
My grandfather was in a plane crash with one of the bush pilots of the North after the war. He lived, obviously. They had to get rescued but everyone made it. Any landing you can walk away from is a good one. The bush pilots influenced my family to take up aviation for the next couple of generations.

Wilfred "Wop" may also had another incident where he knocked the tip of the prop after plowing into the bush on a runway that was too short. Solution? Cut the same amount off the other end of the prop and fly away. Real men don't worry about things like balancing propellers........lol

Open cockpit, in the Arctic? Forget that!!! How the hell did they protect their face? Eyes, ears, and nose can only be protected up to a point. Even with goggles, no ice shards from the tear ducts? They must have been mouth breathing the entire time they were in high elevation. Q to pilots: In that kind of atmosphere and terrain, do pilots just fly like 100 feet above the treetops? Making sure not to get too high up? But then only accounting for mountains when necessary to go over then and then back down again?
@TheManFrayBentos6 күн бұрын
They had a low screen, which would be very effective at flying speed. Lot of early pilots just didn't like the idea of being behind a proper enclosed windscreen, in case of wipe-out conditions.
