In the Philippines, chisel-grind blades are associated with Visayas and Visayan-speaking areas of northern Mindanao. But the rest of the country mostly use convex grind for traditional blades, except probably some towns in western Rizal province where they also use chisel grind in some blade profiles. Btw, that blade used for sugarcanes is locally called "lantip" in Negros, I think the one with buffalo horn hilt is called a paragaw-at/panggaw-at in Ilocano.

I love this series of video, but I would be curious to know as to the composition of the steels as in my experience parangs, goloks, kuhkuris, and the heavy machetes (spines around 1/4") are often made from leaf springs which is usually 5160 or very similar. Having watched your videos, as well as a lot of forging from around the world, and having done my own I think the hardness differences you are seeing is from the heat treat, & tempering. There are just so many variables when it comes to both heat treat, & tempering it is impressive. 5160 is a rather forgiving steel, but there is still a lot of room in how hard you get the edge, and then how hard you leave it. I bet on some of your bigger blades there you will even be able to find differences in edge hardness between different points on the edge as well as generally a softer spine, & a hard edge. Thanks for this content!

Very nice collection Grayson. The 880g one reminds me of the ones that the meat vendors use in the open markets in the Philippines. Thank you as always for sharing your equipment and knowledge with us. God bless and stay safe.

Thanks Rich, yes it does resemble a meat cleaver. You could chop through some serious bone with that one.

Nice collection and demo. BTW how do you clean them? The high carbon steel can often rust so I give my blades a wipe down with mineral oil.
@Bushchannel
@Bushchannel 8 жыл бұрын
Hey B. I'd just use the sharpening stone to scrape away the rust. Or a steel scowering pad from the kitchen. Another option is keep it wrapped in an oily cloth for a few days.

***** Yes all good methods. I use a CLP mineral oil which does everything I need it to. If its rust we're talking about then best to scrub it off with steel wool and some good oil.

Superb when you consider the man hours that's gone into your collection in crafting and collecting it's v impressive. Id have them as wallmounted pride of place talking point but detachable for use as a needed.

Any advice on places to buy a good Parang online? Not all of us can get to South East Asia at the moment.

I find a little sharpening and a run on the strop actually helps my edge last longer by laying the metal fibers on the edge in a little better.

If you load a strop with white on one side and green on the other, the white will add a micro convex right at the edge no matter the grind, and the green will do the finish polishing and make sure all the steel fibers are flat which will make your edge a little more durable.

If you strop the edge it will actually make the edge dull faster. It refines the little teeth on the edge so short they will wear of faster.

Hi, I wanted to ask you, since you seem familiar to me in the use of parangs, which is your best model in terms of robustness, reliability and ease of use? Have you ever had experience with Parang Condor? I was looking at the Bushcraft parang model and the Eco Parang model, anyway let me know what parang you think is best done to be used to make the purchase, thanks to Michele.

You should try leather stropping. Safer for the steel and hones the blade without sacrificing the steel.
