If your in the south eastern states, use a small fire and smoke. Our humidity won't allow for the quick drying to occur. I use a smaller drying rack on a tripod and box it in with evergreen branches to hold some smoke and heat in. After the skin is on, place in sun.
@TaylorsAuthenticTraditions
@TaylorsAuthenticTraditions Жыл бұрын
Shiyo Baldeagle. Your words speak truth. Very high humidity environments will take much longer for your meat to cure. If one can place their meat in a room with heat i.e. a wood stove(as in my opinion, the meat is much more palatable without the smoke, as I have used a low fire to finish curing mine in a moist humid environment when fowl weather moved in) it will expedite the process. Sgi for tuning in and for your words of wisdom. More content just like this coming soon! Sgi🦅🙏

@@StarGapFarm I have. The reason for the hunt or slaughter of livestock late in the fall is to take advantage of what had been provided in cooler and drier air. Even if the sun is lower and gives fewer hours each day, the benefit of lower relative humidity outweighs and allows even a small fire to keep away the majority of insects while giving a little extra heat. If using a fire, take care to remember that combustion of any hydrocarbon yields water. I've seen someone shocked when their fancy steel box smoker was covered inside with condensation and the meat was hardly more dry than as it went in.

Bless you, child of light! I wish to live these ways again. Raw meat saved my life. I am so grateful to have found you. I currently dehydrate my raw meat by the wood stove but am going to try and make a drying stand like yours this year from the may wild willows we have in the valley. I can’t wait to watch more of your videos. I want to learn to tan the hides I have been collecting and make clothing and shelter with them. Keep letting your light shine!
@TaylorsAuthenticTraditions
@TaylorsAuthenticTraditions Жыл бұрын
@@Pursuet_Paradise Shiyo MOA! We are blessed you are here! Willows should work so long as they are at least a few inches wide as thinner willows will have too much bend in them. Our willows here at least in their thick cluster stands do not get more than maybe 1-2" in diameter. Please let me know how it works for you once you build it! I would love to see it done by someone who learned this ancient technique. At times, depending on fowl weather moving in, you may still have to bring that meat in and let it rest by the wood stove but once the fowl weather moves back out, one can simply take their poles back out to the drying stage and reset your poles. The only thing is, once the meat poles are removed, it breaks the temporary bond between the wood and the meat so if a good wind blow comes in, it could shift your poles slightly, just something to keep your eyes on. I pray this works out for you! Also, I had more in depth videos on the braintanning process but my phone which had the SD card in it with all of my shot content fell out of my pocket on the sailboats hit the deck and sunk 10' under water into thick mud. So I will have to reshoot all of this content. Tanning the hides is something of nostalgia. It is truly a a remarkable experience when one can take a raw product of mother nature that will decay if left to its own and turn that into a useable, superior piece of material one can make clothing, blankets, pouches the human imagination is the limit! What type of shelter are you looking at proliferating? I should do a series on primitive shelters. Sgi for tuning in, more content like this coming soon! Sgi🙏🦅🛐

I would imagine that many places in FL would make this process difficult. The bugs and birds are one thing. Raccoon and opossum are another. Even stray/feral cats would want a piece and the humidity can stay at nearly 100 percent during the wet season where it rains every day making the drying process all the more difficult. I'd imagine smoking the meat will do the job better but be careful what you burn as some of the plants produce toxic fumes when burned. Not saying it can't be done, only that there are many challenges in combination that you don't face in other regions. If course, because winters are so mild, sources of food don't become as seasonally scarce.

I love this, I had a book one time to explain what to do, I have made jerky before, but understand the indigenous people did marinate with spices as people do now, but I think salt could have been used or traded, but originally probably not available, you can use a pickling salt to marinade the meat then hang it to dry, it will not let any bug on it and it's edible, plus salt kills germs, but I like this method he is using and it's the oldest way, next would be how it was stored in baskets, bags of skin, boxes made from bark, or clay pots, I seen my grandmother had a bushel gourd that dried real hard, you cut the top out and scraped it out clean and the top that got cut off was also the lid, I live in Louisiana in the northwest area, it is humid here but summer gets hot and the wind does blow, we also have ants real bad, wonder if the burt area of the bottom pole legs will stop the ants, some times it's like they are in the trees and it's raining ants. I do like this video and it's great for those who want to get serious, also down here the shrimp get dried and sold at the grocery store, and put in any dish, pour water over the and they are like ready to cook, if you want to dry them, soak them in lemon juice and salt water, rinse and drain, they keep good dried, people down south of us do this too I love this and even if I have seen it before, it's actually how my dad did it, this area was a designated hunting ground before other people came to settle , many tribes came together as a hunting party, a big lake here has a story of how they camped in a valley here but a tornado came and a flood , the story is they were asleep and here came the water, running in every direction for safety the tribes got SEPERATED and became native to other areas after they got lost from one another, we are Choctaw and in a lot of places, the lake is Caddo lake and after it flooded it stayed, another is cross lake, lots of fishing here at one time, this is a great way to prepare food to store for later use, I like the way you can use the dried meat in a stew, good healthy eating.

If you do end up procuring your jerkey, please let us know how it turns out! Sgi oginalli🙏🦅 P.s., what was the cause for the flood? I.e. man-made?

Hello Taylor ! I found this video very interesting , I'm from Australia I'm what you would call a city boy .Everything comes from the store & really know nothing on where or how it's made . But the past 5 yrs The wife & i bought an off grid property in the "bush" .The only luxury we have is power . So we are ruffing it . Machines make our life easier, as we in our 60's now . But it hasn't stop the wife leaning how to dry out foods .We haven't tried meat as yet but many types of vegetables & some dairy experimenting .lol. How i came to your channel i was watching a 5 part series on the 5 tribes of the lower 48 by this guy named " Peter" on there Res .Life & struggles of the people ,I found through watching these different tribes they have the same struggles as the rest of us fewer housing & drugs .The younger people are not interested in the old ways but only substance abuse .But that's not really true , there are some like yourself showing the people & sharing with others the Traditional ways when it comes to food. For example a man called " James " from Crow tribe made a fruit snack that you roll up & as he says some medicine added to the fruit .I see him & yourself preserving your traditions & culture ,Many peoples from all walks of life have song & dance but that's just part of who they are & where they came from .I wish you well in your en devour & success ! Hopefully many other tribes will share the old ways & be like you & James keeping your peoples tribe a live & you'll become the next teachers for the younger ones who want to learn !

Shiyo Kyle! Sgi for tuning in and sharing your amazing venture! How do you enjoy your life now prior to when you lived in the cities? I want to make something clear here, I am not presently a member of any state or federally recognized tribes nor do I or have I ever claimed to be. My great great grandfather Udalvnusti(Walkingstick) was removed from his homelands after his parents were killed during the roundup. He was later removed and transported by barge. This shop,our crafts and our videos are inspired by my Tsalagi(Cherokee) ancestors. It is a true saying what your words speak that many of the young throughout the country are more interested in drugs, gangs, alcohol but this is a byproduct of the evil actions committed on them by the United States Government. For one example; Pine Ridge is known as Prisoner of War Camp 334. How would you feel if every day you woke up inside a POW camp inside of your own country with a broken treaty from Fort Laramie signed in 1851 and now there are thousands of people living in the lands that legally by treaty belonged to the Oglala. This is one small(but large) example of many broken treaties. These economic barriers weigh on the shoulders of those that bear them. The genocidal atrocities that were brought forward for example the Tsalagi, after The United States Supreme Court passed 30:1, permitting the Tsalagi to remain on their lands. President Andrew Jackson famously known as the Indian Killer overthrew the U.S. supreme court decision which is Illegal for any President to do and moved forward with the Indian Removal Act, rounded up the Tsalagi like cattle and placed them into stockad made for cattle. Many became I'll, babies died, woman were raped by white soldiers. They had to walk from their Indigenous homelands to an unknown world across the great waters. Thousands died and most graves were dug very shallow as the winter freeze made the ground too difficult to dig. One key point that needs to be acknowledged is that the tribes(those that weren't completely wiped away forever by the U.S. Government) are still here. Still going. Still building. Still breathing. Not every tribe lives in tipis nor wears Eagle War feather bonnets and live on the plains riding around on horseback. This is a misconception put forward by Hollywood. Each tribe had their own songs, dances, beliefs, structures, homes, haircuts, etc. These are very small glimpses into the full history and I suggest one reads the full history to gain a complete understanding. It is of my hope that the youth shall rise up out of the oppressions and bondage mindset and spread their wings and fly back to the ancient paths that each once walked. We strive to maintain our ancestral pathways. One remains free while living in the footsteps of Yahweh, The Creator of All, ways. Sgi for tuning in, more content just like this coming soon! Please let us know how your jerkey making experience goes. If at any time during your trials you have anyquestions, dont hesitate to reach out as we are here to help in any way we can! Sgi!🙏🦅✡🛐

@@TaylorsAuthenticTraditions Hello Taylor .Like Wow i never thought i would get a reply like this. I can understand your anger & what the American Government did to ALL the Native peoples in the past . Only by history accounts i know a few things what they did broke treaty after treaty .Slaughtered 60,000 Natives over prime lands ,& today this day i found out if a tribal group can't take care of the land the federal Government can sell that land to a non Native .That was said by a man named ' John" if spelling is correct Larkota tribe. These were evil greedy men land grabbing & didn't matter who was living there ,just took it. But we can't be blamed for what our ancestors did. It's the same as Australia's past that isn't taught in schools ,how the white settlers Kill thousand of Native Australian's in Tasmania until there were none left . Or the stolen generation ,where the white people thought they were helping the Natives by Educating them Stolen there children from there families . & yet our Government is still saying "sorry" for generations. We can't ignore it didn't happen ,But we must move forward as a people or be stuck in the past full of hate & divide.I can forgive those who wrong me but ... i'm sorry i can't forget .But... i do believe you'll make a great teacher in the Traditional ways & many will follow you .I am sure there are many other viewers see this in you as i do. I really hope you succeed & stand proud as the man you have become & rise up & be better than those who did your people wrong in the past .I Believe in you !
