Very interesting to see the red huckleberries. We only have the purple and blue ones in Montana. Magnificient idea to preserve seeds of the red/pink/white bush. Its fun to see you stirring with sticks in the wild. That it is going to be good wine. Thank you, Greg!

great video greg. i have been making wine for 45 years and love this process. you can absolutely, with minimal equipment, make very palletable wine from fresh fruit. the kit wines dont hold a candle to fresh fruit and patience is the key. do not hurry the natural fermentation.. been following your vids for years now and thanks for the vast buscraft knowledge you share.

Too late now probably, but Greg, if you have a tool kit, just put a socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt and rotate your engine clockwise. I had to do this with my 318 v8 in my van when I did the timing chain. I did not have a breaker bar, just a 1/2 drive socket wrench and I was able to do it. It does not turn easy but, it is not all that hard either. If it is too hard, just pull out a few spark plugs, but I doubt that would be needed. Probably need to replace the starter now too, or at least the gear on the bendix drive so it does not tear up the new ring gear.

Great ideas about preserving the seeds, you can never tell with those things but it is worth a try. I have experience with tomatoes of different types and found if I grew them together they would sometimes cross, like I had yellow cherry tomatoes and red pear tomatoes next to each other and ended up with yellow pear ones. It might be an idea to plant them a couple hundred metres away from each other just to try. I stored the seeds on paper towels and let them dry then put them in a paper bag for the winter. Worked great. Good luck, and thanks for the video.

Saving the plant's genes is very very smart. My father grows peppers and if they have a plant that grows abnormally it actually sells for more due to the plant usually having a weird feature it evolved during the growth process.

I live in Maine where 90% of US commercial "wild lowbush blueberries", "Vaccinium angustifolium Ait." come from. I know a bit about it because my dad is from "Downeast", also where Zake is from, and where most of the fields are. If they are picked by hand, (which most are because the fields where they grow is so rocky) they use a "blueberry rake". I am sure the blueberry rake would work just fine on highbush blueberries and huckleberries. Blueberry rakes can be bought in some hardware stores and agricultural co-ops, or online. Commercial operations today use a berry "winnowing machine" to remove the few leaves from the picked berries. The machine has a fast moving belt the berries are poured on. They shoot over an opening that has a blower or fan that blows away the leaves and small twigs. I imagine you could just pour the berries in front of a fan. It would take a little practice to figure out the right method. The "rotting" berries on the bush should be just fine for wine. They are not technically "rotting" yet. Because of the high sugar content, fruits naturally ferment first from natural yeasts when breaking down. The huckleberries are fermenting on the bush. Once the sugars are consumed by yeasts, bacteria go to work on the leftover cellulose fiber, which is "rotting"..

Greg needs to come to the laurentians of Quebec to harvest some wild grapes too. They grow EVERYWHERE! I live in Montreal, and I can find them in every second alleyway, overtaking chain link fences and consuming large parts of forested land. I mean, we have grapevines as thick as alder branches that take over the canopies of my favourite trail. If Greg wants to try his hand at making the wine of the first peoples and settlers of Canada, THIS is the place! A bit of Canadiana in every sip
