In this video I carry out a field test on two pocket, mesh, string hammocks and give my reasons for chosing one of them...which will it be ?

Thanks very much for the shout out Mick, much appreciated and im glad you enjoyed my 10 favourite items vid. Always pleased when something like that promoted additional thought etc! Thats just the set up I use but a single branch overhead is easily used with adaptation and ingenuity. Many times Ive used my hammock to do just what you did and kick back and relax. Like you say, the liklihood of using it for a gill net/trapping is slim, just mentioned that for the survivalists out there! MTFBWY

yea the way the netting is with the second hammock If I were in it would make me very nervous of it snapping on me. I like the first one better because its more assuring, but I don't like it because its cram packed. but with the second one, the netting is very expandable so that's one factor that I like if only you could combine those two good features then you would have One hammock. but a very GOOD one at that. :) Its okay to keep shopping around for comfort. I encourage you to do so.

@mazadan My sleeping hammock is a DD which I highly rate. This net hammock is just carried to get kick off floor, to use as a seat, for me its easier than having to find three strong sticks to make a tripod for a cloth bushcraft seat, it has so many uses and is more versatile. Just one branch overhead is adequate for a seat. Its not meant for long term sleeping so insulation isnt needed. Unlss it was an emergency situation which is highly unlikely. This offers a cheap ready made seating option

Thanks for the great comments and video response. Yes I would like to combine the two and will be looking for a hammock which combines both... thanks again

I'd ditch the mesh hammocks entirely and get one made of a solid cloth. They're much more comfortable, especially if you stay in it more than 15 minutes. Get it wide and lay in it diagonally and you'll never think of one of those mesh hammocks again. See hammockforums (dot net) for more info than you ever wanted to know about camping hammocks.

the second one is more comfortable because the meshes are smaller..

Not quite sure what you are asking, but if you used a bug net with these hammocks it would have to envelope you completely so as no bugs came in through the hammock mesh. Thanks for commenting

I have this older one also.. for about twenty years i reccon, it was my first ever try at hammock camping, but i dudn't trust it completely so i went back to tents. But just a few days ago i bought a Ticket to the Moon (double size) and i could use this as a lugage attic or basement and it's only 200 grams so it would make a nice seat when dayhiking. :)) thanks for the review!

I had a net hammock in Costa Rica 2 mpnths ago as we'll as my Hennesey Hammock (highly modified). The net hammock was in an outside pocket of my ruck. We had an afternoon rainstorm blow in and I slung my poncho and then threw up the net hammock. It rained for a couple hours and I hung out dry and comfortable, brewed up a kettle of broth to treat my heat cramps and sat in my mesh hammock and read a book. I could have done the same with my HH but the poncho and mesh hammock worked fine.

i got one of the old type as a present a couple of years back. as new i think its was only rated at 100 kg (15.5 stone ish). as i'm nearer 18 st was a bit wary first ime but it holds me fine. just up graded to a tenth wonder hammock which i used for the first time this weeked. lots comfier but it is a nylon sheet type and doesn't quite fit in your pocket but for under £10 for the basic model its all good.

I carry one of the newer mesh hammocks to keep my kit off of the floor while in in my dd travel sleeping , then during the day put my bag in the dd and sit and chill out in the mesh one, It great for doing a sit spot for seeing wildlife too, once the woods gets accustomed to you being there ..just fight the temptation to swing too much lol

Fabric hammocks are about the same size, but much more comfortable as you can lay Brazilian style at an angle for a more flat lay.

Both are too small. You'll find canvas or the lighter ripstop way, way more comfortable. But, here in the States where bears can be a problem, you use nets like these to pull your gear and food up into the trees. Sometimes it even works! LOL!

the mesh in the 'old' one was much smaller, I think that is why it was more comfy. how is it 'woven' though, did they just unravel/untwist one line to pass the other one through?

Do you happen to know what gauge of cord was used to make these hammocks? I was considering making my own as I make rabbit (and fox - using larger netting needles and mesh gauges) purse nets for use when ferreting, and I was hoping to apply a similar logic to produce a hammock. The only issue is that I don't know what breaking strain I would have to aim for to prevent it collapsing... it might require a bit of trial and error. Thick paracord would also be extremely difficult to utilise in the same way as the 2mm spun nylon used for rabbit nets, as it wouldn't fit on even my largest netting needle.

Do you mean to support the hammock... if so climbing tape is better or amsteel blue... online is best or your local outdoor store.
