Retired Canadian carpenter. I think it's good to have both styles. Different tools for different jobs. Started using Japanese shark tooth saws 40+ years ago and briefly studied Japanese joinery. Silky is good for clearing an area. Making decks or sheds, sometimes there are tree limbs up high so Silky works better. Processing firewood and Agawa is better. For EDC I have a folding saw that takes reciprocating saw blades made by Lennox so I can use all kinds of blades. Cheers from Canada.

I like the folding Silky saws. They cut on the pull stroke only, and I find that easier to work with.

This is exactly what I’ve heard about the bigger silkys. I have the Silky Gomboy and it’s incredible for its purpose... but for processing some larger diameter logs, I’m gonna grab the boreal21

I Agree with Y’all’s assessments,,,!!!! One thing you didn’t mention(1/2 way through video),,, Becky,if needed,, can find a Replacement Blade for her Boreal 21”, at any hardware store or garden store. You,, having a Silky saw(I own a Outback , Curve420mm Silky Saw,, and love it,,) Must find a Silky blade. If the store your At doesn’t sell Silky Blades ,,, Your SOL,,!!!!! I own a Boreal 24”,,, also with the black/ yellow handle. I really enjoy the Versatility of the Saw. And Also, Choice of Blade type and brand/maker,,,,!!!!! I Agree with Y’all,,, Becky’s saw Wins the Day,,,!!!! Cheers,,, Joshua

I have the pockey, gom anf big boy 2000.. I also have the agawa...like you said they all have a place.. I use the agawa to process wood while winter camping. The thing I disliked about the bigboy was how it beats up your fore arm trying to cut and keep pressure on it. I am glad you all enjoy the agawa... they are great saws

I use both silky and a Boreal 21. Got to say though my Boreal is my go to camp and pack saw. Silky blade replacements are rediculously expensive. You can sharpen silky blades by placing each side flat on a large wetstone. But let's be honest, bow saw blades are cheap to replace.

I just wanted to let you know, that I saw this video........😉😬😬😬 sorry. One of my saws is an Opinel #12, that definitely is very convenient. Have you ever used one? I guess a similar comparison would be between an axe and a hatchet. I have a Fiskars X7, and a tomahawk. Both of them are great for general purpose wood cutting around the camp, but I would definitely want a larger axe if I had to do a bunch of wood processing all day.

Great episode, a 2 for 1, Bushwacker Man and Girl Outdoors.:) The silky is great for felling because you've got 2 hands on the saw and when you cut, you draw it back and you actually use your body weight if you just kind of fall back when pulling. I was thinking about making it better for processing by using a strap or belt at the end of the handle, strap it to your forearm right below the elbow (for stability) then attach a vertical handle up near the folding joint. Then you could hold the log with one hand and put some weight into sawing with the other. I noticed you were cutting birch wood. I wonder how quick both saws cut pine or spruce. (sometimes that's all there is) ..in W Canada anyway, altho you can usually find a birch among the evergreens.👋😊

my gerber 12 is like a mini version of the Boreal21 , those look realy good as you say for processing the 21 is better.. I tend to carry dry offcuts up to my camp as they don't spit and pop when it,s quite , for that stealthy not to smoky fire :) . ATB. Phil.

I have owned a similar Gerber saw for at least a decade. It came with bone blade and green wood blade. Best uses: hunting and backpacking. The kit in its pouch was very 'pack friendly'. Especially with today's twig stoves, an experienced woodsman can get all the fire needed for three-seasons use without needing the larger Silky Saws. For arborists or winter firewood needs, the Silky line is just fine.

Aussie's are like "stuff that mate, grab the Stihl and let's hit the frothy's", you Brits and Europeans work too hard lol, I've seen these saws on so many channels thanks to Lars and others. As for the colours, you can thank the Finns for that. Seems every man and his dog have copied Fiskars two tone colour setup.

His "technique" was perfect, what are you talking about? Lol. That's what sawing with a Silky looks like in order to make sure you don't snap the blade which I've almost done myself. Use enough Silky saws and it will happen. Big drawback to the Silky's. I prefer my Boreal 21 over the BigBoy but Silky's are great saws with a few advantages here and there. For straight up bucking trees all day, Boreal wins though. Silky's are great for minimal sawing.
