using guts to bait a line left overnight is another option in survival situation (atached under water for stealth). another improvement is having 25cm (10") leaders with loop on end pre atached to the hooks/flies. having fished with injured dominant hand (broken wrist) was challenging, having looped leads made it MUCH easier. that made me realise why the aviatior parachute survival kits have that (likely injured pilot feedback)

Outstanding video. 👍🏼👍🏼 I will occasionally live vicariously through your videos, this is no exception. In my younger days, I would do campouts with just my knife kit. When I was raising my two boys, we would do “survival kit camps”. Not just to test our kits, but also to test our skills. Don’t have as much opportunity nowadays, but I still love to build a survival kit around each of my knives. Semper Fi

This was amazing, thank you sir! You should enable super likes on your videos so people can support you further if they want to! Your field instructional videos are the highlight of my day, and bring me back to the times when I was a Boy Scout 👍👍👍 I would have included a two sections of cheesecloth in your survival kit a metre squared each - my scoutmaster used to say that there's about a thousand and one uses for it in bushcraft: A tourniquet, a bandage, tinder if you rub it with animal tallow or dung, a bug net for hiking or sleeping, a bindle to keep your items or foraged food with you, a filter to remove heavy particulates from water, and if you dye them carefully with yellow and black - they can even be used to make a pair of semaphore flags! I suppose the only trouble would be seeing if you could wrap all the other things in that kit up in the cheesecloth tight enough to fit in that zipper pocket on the sheath... Long live the survivalists!

The SK5 is a beast. Stands for “Survival Knife 5 inch”. I remember when that first came out as a collaboration with OKC and Justin at Hedgehog Leatherworks around 2010. It is still a top pick for me. Can also be lashed into a spear with the flat bottom and lanyard holes.

These really are my favorite mini kits to carry, right on the knife in a small pouch like that. One suggestion, don't put iodine tablets in that plastic tube. The iodine will leach out of the tablets making them useless. You can already see the inside of the tube turning orange from the pills leaching out the iodine. Plus, the iodine will corrode anything and everything near it. It even destroyed my fishing line when I did this 20 or 30 years ago. I had 30 pound test line that a child could break with ease. It rusted other metal objects too like a razor blade, wire saw, wire, and even turned my aspirins and compass face orange. It's best to just leave them in the original bottle. Keep up the great work.

The blackbird.... great knife. I picked up a factory 2nd a few years ago. No sheeth, so I made my own. Kydex and dollar store epoxy. Far better than the original sheeth. Small buffing blemish on the blade, but man it's great tough steel. Factory 2nd was far cheaper too.

Something I would like to see is, how to make mini kits that fits into otherwise main components of a BOB, just as you have shown with the knife... the knife itself is highly useful... but then you had the little mini kit with it... have a water storage tank, one of the collapsible one's, and have a mini kit taped to it, for just incase that was the only thing you found after falling off the trail, when going to get water for where you where originally camping at...

Got something similar I made years ago out of a Becker BK10, and the stock nylon sheath that comes with it. Personally wouldn't use an Ontario Blackbird for Bushcraft survival. The older version was ATS-34 steel. Newer ones, S35VN. Far from ideal for re-sharpening out in the field. BK10 is 1095 Carbon steel. Much easier to re-sharpen. While the others offer better edge retention, depending on the circumstances and amount of usage; would prefer not to be stuck outdoors with a somewhat sharp butter-knife.
