I find that a quick scoring of the MDF before I pop the pieces out to help with the tearing. Also, TTCombat has had some too thick MDF in the past so having a file or sandpaper to thin the tabs is useful.

Do you think you could use a piece of sprue and some cardstock to make a channel above the doorframe for the door to slide on.

I've made sliding doors for the first Minka A that we built. Well... Carl did the building but I made the door guides. The trick is you need both an upper and lower channel. I happen to have plastic stock in a "U" shape that I used for the upper channel, then I used a couple of square toothpicks for the lower channel. It works fine and looks fine too, but I'm not sure I'll go to that trouble every time. It wasn't hard, but it was a fair amount of effort for a relatively minor payoff.
