A pity about that man, sorry for you! the two reactions to surprise are "fight" or "flight". You realise that nearly everybody - maybe after a "freeze" chooses "flight" - to escape/get away /avoid etc. And then someone comes along and wants to "fight". Not often, but you caught one here.
