Micah is former business major who just became a medical doctor after graduating from McMaster Medical School. In today's video, I interviewed one of my best friends from medical school to ask him about his journey to becoming a doctor as a non-traditional student, some of the hardest parts about the MCAT and med school in general and whether or not he would recommend the same path to other students. Please feel free to ask any questions that you'd like and I'll be sure to pass them on to Micah for you :)

Hey everyone :) Micah was kind enough to come on today and be the first student to share some of his experiences with us on camera. Great informative video! As someone considering a non trad path (international education, immigrant, nursing student) to medicine it would be really great to see more tips about approaching GPAs and MCAT :)

@@nxtgenmd Thank you. I am kinda confused about my prospects as I’d like to understand if universities would find me eligible based on my international undergrad (WES evaluated) (I also have an MBA but I read up that just undergrad itself is counted) and an accelerated nursing program (which has pass/fail practical courses too). If there’s a current student who has been in a similar boat and can shed some light, that would be extremely helpful to give me a reality check about my med school goal.

@@MsNikym I'm always on the lookout for other students to come and speak about their pathway but in the meantime what I can say is that the Canadian medical school admissions process very heavily emphasizes undergrad GPA. What you should do is 1st see if your undergrad is accredited at the schools which you would like to apply to (see the school websites for more information). After that, convert your GPA via the OMSAS scale and then consider your MCAT scores. The process will be different if you are applying as a Canadian PR or International applicant - I suggest looking up all of these things directly on the OMSAS and school websites :)

Awesome video to learn from. Was there a specific course Micah would recommend to get started on reviewing the sciences? I am in a similar situation as a Commerce undergrad in Canada

It is so awesome to hear stories outside the traditional pathways to medicine! I was just wondering how you studied for the MCAT with little science background? Did you take a prep course or teach yourself/ what resources would you recommend for someone studying with a limited science background?
@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Teagan :) Glad you found it helpful. Here's a response from Micah: "I took a prep course because I didn’t even know where to start. This was helpful because it narrowed down the material to focus on! And then I dedicated my time to areas that I knew I could improve and focused on learning the basics in areas where the depth of knowledge was too much to learn in the time I had (orgo). For CARS I did one passage every night and I felt that this really helped with the repetition." Good luck with everything!

This was a really helpful video, thank you for sharing! As a student undecided between a business and medical career (and, ironically, debating heavily between Western Ivey and a health science program!), I was wondering what made Micah ultimately choose medicine over business, and how he came to this decision?

Hi Sherry :) Glad do know that it helped and its very interesting to see the parallels between your though process and Micah's aha. I'll reach out and see if he can elaborate further. Best for now!

Hi, this is really interesting to see other’s experience. Can you please find an ESL student meaning someone who speak english as a second language. That would be give me a great perspective how hard can be medicine for them. Thank you for sharing your journey 👍🏻

How did he get his med school course pre-requisits? I'm having a similar issue because we don't have post baccalaureate here in Canada
@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd 2 ай бұрын
Many Canadian medical schools do not have course pre-requisites. Especially those that require the MCAT. This doesn’t apply for every school though :)

He had to get his science courses to do the MCAT ...would be great if you do an interview with someone who had to get the prerequisite science courses . Someone in their 30s or older with no background in science 😊✨

I have a question pls: How possible is it to study for Masters degree in medical inclined field with a bachelor's degree in Business Studies?
@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd Жыл бұрын
You can definitely do that :) a very popular masters for business students looking to enter the medical field is “public health.” It would be difficult to do a masters of biomed or biology though if you came from a business undergrad. The reason is because these programs are very lab focused and research based in many cases. They often build off of concepts taught directly in a biomed / premed undergrad

So the eligibility to get into a Med school is a good score in Mcat if your from a business major?
@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd Жыл бұрын
All medical schools are different - for those that require the MCAT, a good score makes you a more competitive applicant
