What are Japanese business manners and etiquette? What are the basic rules for a meeting with clients and partners? How do I follow bowing customs?
Conducting business in Japan is a little different from any typical meeting anyone would expect. Instead of relying on just facts and flowery words, transactions are highly influenced by social interactions and business relationships - and closing a new deal on the first try is almost always close to impossible.
But why?
Japanese companies often go for long-term planning, which means any deals they make should be with people they are highly likely going to get along with. This means that if you plan on meeting with a business from Japan, you should put in the effort to make a good impression.
Some people would even say that business transactions in Japan are a lot like courting!
Fun fact:
Did you know that the highest-ranking employee in a group starts all the interactions? It's a lot like a game of "following the leader"! You have to wait for the supervisor, manager, or boss to sit down before you take your seat, and they have to be the first to introduce themselves.

Comedy is a great way to teach. I was laughing but also cringing. LOL It's dramatized but it's amazing how many foreigners are like this. When I first came here to Japan I was aware that they were kind of over the top professional and courteous, but despite trying my best I was pretty fail. We really do need to learn the specific customs and protocols. Over time Japanese businesses (people) increasingly don't want to do business with us because we are so annoying. Even if we think we are being professional. It's a hard lesson to learn. Of course there are many more than this, and we should also learn the common expressions in Japanese. If we up our game with these things Japan will open up to us more, and we will experience more successes.
