Good video Faye. I'm definitely going to check out Shop Ware because I don't love the management software I'm currently using. As for your tools, look into Pro-Tec Tool Insurance. They specialize in insurance for mechanic's tools and have a both a low premium and deductible for $50,000 worth of coverage in their standard plan. They can also custom tailor a plan if you need more or less coverage and they're insured in both your home shop as well as in transit to and from jobs.

My brother-in-law is a master mechanic. He said when he needs a special tool he just calls his local tool dealer (snap-on, etc). They can usually have it to him within a few hours.

What I have always told anyone is that one of the best deals are those craftsman 200 piece tool sets in the plastic case, you can get them for around 2-300 bucks, that is going to get you most of what you need to work on things, also some needle nose, channel locks, vice grips, wire strippers and crimpers, a butane torch for heat shrinks, a good set of jack-stands and a good jack and a torque wrench. That is enough to do about 90% of all jobs on most vehicles. Oh and video idea! (if you haven't covered it already): How to properly put a vehicle up on jack stands! I had a 1 ton dually fall off a set of jack stands and take me for a ride across the street one time underneath it. That was super scary!

If you have a vehicle covered under a standard policy, it won't cover you if you have an accident while driving for a commercial purpose. You need a specific rider (at additional cost) to your main policy or a separate commercial policy. This also applies to folks driving for gig jobs like Uber, Lyft, Favor, Door Dash, unless they tell you they have insurance that covers you while driving.

I am hoping to start a mobile mechanic business here in Indiana very soon. I have an accounting degree but accounting just isn't for me. I've rebuilt a 2001 Chrysler Sebring as well as swapped out the transmission. I've done a variety of other jobs including two cruise control installs (one was plug and play), installing power locks, remote start, etc. I feel like I learned so much rebuilding that Chrysler 2.7 liter. I'm now working on the ASE tests as well as the MECP. I"m so glad you mentioned it doesn't require a license. It appears to be that way here in my locality as well as in the state of Indiana. I checked with ASE and my professional expereience can be at my own business. I've also had an insurance quote for business liability insurance. So I think I"m on my way. I absolutely love the idea of the Car Fest there in San Antonio. I actually gave away that Chrysler Sebring to a family member who really needed it. I figured I learned so much from the experience that it was a win-win. I had two Buff Orphington chickens that my wife and I had pets for SEVEN YEARS! Unfortunately, last May a fox got to them. It sucks! But for seven long years, they lived like royalty. :)

Faye, I loved the wooden SST spanner that you made! I actually made one out of metal to remove a pulley from a 22RE and it still bent the 3/4 rod handle that I used... it was mild steel though. Great video!

Sometimes making a tool that can do the job saves much needed money, if you can make something work, and it works use it. There's endless special service tools out there , one part of my toolbox that never stops growing, and will never stop growing. The cardboard one hit's home, hard. Cardboard is your best friend. About pricing your work, a good thing is to have price ranges depending on what the repair may or may not entail as some things are only found once the job is underway, last thing client wants is unknowns popping up unaccounted for

I would think a great cordless impact gun and sockets. You are going to use those things a bunch. Taking wheels off to do brakes and for taking the stuff off. Watch south main auto and see how much he uses impact guns on every brake job and anything to do with the wheels.

Daisy does have cute face! Great video, yet again. Kudos for making your own tool. I was shown a trick on sizing a drill bit to a threaded bolt or screw. Hold the bit in front, and line the bolt up behind it. You want to compare the size of the shaft. You should only see the threads. Loved watching you make that tool from (chicken)scratch. Faye, you should take a peek under the hood of a 1999-2004 Nissan Frontier with the 2.4 four banger and the 5 speed. It will be your new favorite to work on.... Hi Faye I enjoy your channel I'm a mechanic have been since the early 90s yea I'm old I have done the independent and dealer and chain garages like monroe muffler etc now I'm self employed I buy and sell muscle cars vintage trucks and flip wreck rebuilds I have to say the vw with the misfits sticker is how I started watching your channel oh and the punk rock girl you are then I realized how good you are esp with new techs getting into the busines steering them on a good path that's not going to discourage and turn them away there was a old biker who took young me under his wing and didnt let me loose on the tool truck and go in debt like I used to see people do later on in my career some kids would list to my advice some just spent more than they could afford but yea I think your awesome for all the help and work you put in to this crazy world of auto repair

Instead of wood use thick wall square tubing same set up as you did with wood. Now to break loss the crank bolt use an impact socket on your breaker bar, wedge the breaker bar on the frame on the right side as you face the front of the vehicle driver side. Crank the engine bolt is loosened. If the belt is broken the crank method won't work as it might hit the valve.

Yeah...Faye get A.C system soon, save up, weather is so so warm, freezer grade rubber seal kits, freezer gas leak detector, dyeing fluid, aluminium pipes, copper pipes, pipe flaring tools, fittings and clamping kits, etc etc.

Hey Faye. Love your content. I just started putting in the work to start my own mobile mechanic business with a friend. We have been doing cheap side work for a long time now and figured why not turn it into something since we make a lot more doing side work than in our 9-5 lol. Hoping our new business will be successful and once we are off the ground we plan to start a channel showing off some of the stuff we work on (lots of race cars surprisingly) and doing tutorials and custom builds.

At least in CA the city that you work in probably requires a business licence. You repair labor is not taxed but your parts and mark up have to be. Generally, your Company rate is calculated by your total revenue.

Im new to the channel, love how enthusiastic you are when most of the dealership techs I’ve worked with over the years seem to hate their job. Would you come to Lansing, MI and replace my rotted out brake lines on my 95 GMC 1500? Lol its only a couple hour journey by plane. I just don’t feel like doing it after I spend 40 hrs a week fixing cars. No I wont watch you as you work. As a fellow mechanic, that is one of the most annoying things when someone is watching you work, when there is a waiting room! If my back ever gives out and I cant do this job, I might drive to Texas to have you fix my car, theres too many hacks out there. Also a Robinair A/C machine is a about $3500, but should pay itself off quickly. During the summer here, most of the complaints were no A/C

,I run a small engine repair shop, and charging fair prices for repairs is challenging. If I get a trimmer in and it's going to run $80 parts and labor and it can be bought new at Walmart for $60, I'll tell the customer it's better to just buy new. I can't with good concious charge them knowing that. Most times I'll offer them something for the old one if they buy new, as I use the parts to try and fix a low income person's equipment to get them going.

What are Texas' rules when it comes to refrigerant? The reason I ask is because it is possible to make an A/C machine from random parts. I made one that can recover, vacuum, inject oil, and recharge. It's all mechanical and uses R-12a (propane/butane mix) or R-290 (propane).

Keep an eye out for a box trailer...like you'll see from u haul or the construction companies like to use. Those can be customized to hold that equipment. Also keep an eye out for the equipment like the AC machine, serious it in garage if you find one cheap at a shop going out of business our something

Hey Faye I enjoy your video very much I'm from South Texas and I'm also a mobile machanic I however rent a small 12x35 storage space in an industrial park nothing crazy I think I pay in total 150 a month just for big jobs such as engine swap and performance upgrades that take me awhile

the most maddening thing about my mobile mechanic phase (7 years) was that I lived right on the state line and worked in two states, and had to charge sales tax to customers at *their* local rates, so I had hundreds of tax codes in my software and filing taxes to -all- of these localities was a major pain, stress, and waste of time. I learned that being a business owner/operator was a full time job in and of itself, before I even picked up a wrench... so if I were to do that again, I would have to find a business partner willing to run the business so I could do the work, or employ a business manager to deal with the forest while I fixed the trees. At that point, I would have to earn enough to support two paychecks, and I don't think that's realistic considering the field I was in and how much territory I was called on to cover (sometimes several hundred miles away and found myself staying over in hotels, etc)

What State are you in that has local sales taxes? Sounds maddening. Plus I’d bet that half of them don’t have an online payment system. Here in KY there are no local sales taxes, only state sales tax to keep up with but that’s on both parts and LABOR CHARGES TOO!

I had to remove the balancer bolt on a 3mzfe that broke the homemade wooden board tool, broke a pulley holding wrench (obviously the bump the starter trick didn't work either)..torch work...nope....and finally required removing flywheel cover plate and wrapping a chain through the flywheel. First time in my life I've ever encountered one this bad.

Well not necessarily undercutting and disrespecting others, you don’t have the overhead of a shop to maintain. When I was mobile computer/network consulting it was the same thing. I could charge less because I worked out of my house there was not brick and mortar shop to pay rent /lease, heat and cool, utilities and insurance on. Now if you do not have the overhead, and you keep your prices in line with traditional shops then you just make more profit. A big but is the time you spend driving from job to job is all lost revenue, so a bit of a trade-off.

As a mobile mechanic how do you recycle your oil? I’m slowly starting my own mobile repair business and as a mobile mechanic for a large company we have a huge recycling tank. What will I do once I can’t use my company’s tank lol

1. Depending on your city and your "license" is your filed record of "auto repair". That's your license. Stop states don't care as long as you are properly insured. Check with your city/state. 2. For liability purposes, you don't have to file LLC, you could have simply gotten insurance because you will still have to insure your service not just your business. If problems arise and they want to sue, they can still sue around that LLC (stating this from experience not regurgitation). 3. The way to get experience is learn and do. Go buy a shit car that don't run, stay the hell off youtube and facebook and learn from pure self-taught knowledge. Get it running on your own. I state this because I been doing this since Wildcat BBS systems BEFORE the internet. It helps you get acquainted with overall experience. 4. Price your work base on YOUR worth not what everybody else is. Sorry to say this but Faye, you are not disrespecting anybody, you are competitive. If you can get the job done less and your fee takes care of your overhead then damnit, lock that client down on your deal and do it. Overall, you will not be able to youtube your worth, you have to factor that in mathematically and understand how to use math to forecast. Factor your worth, set your own hours, get out there and do it. If you don't know what you are doing then fall back to step 3. My comment is not trying to 1up, ridicule nor trying to buck up my chest to sound smart, everything I mentioned is purely from experience and action. Just sharing with others.

I am happy for you that you have the desire to work under the hood and teach “ powderpuff “ mechanics classes to /for women. I picked up a little knowledge from my brother who was a grease monkey for a spell. ( Dk what he does now.) I gleen knowledge from others here and there. I appreciate the car repair books for each type car made. They are very helpful.
