The fumes are scrubbed, so it's CO2 that comes out. This would be the case in either way for the load bearing power plants that are needed to make up for wind and solar-power. I bought myself a lunch box a year ago, coming with a plastic knife, a fork/spoon, and a pair of chopsticks. I'm still using the same a year later, they're easy to clean off and the box is made to accomodate them when I take it. A year after, and a lot of lunches after, even if they go to the trash I won't feel like they would be wasted. Still ,they're doing the job just fine.

The common theme across all these "green/sustainable" programs from big companies are at most a marketing and greenwashing gimmick. The principle attention should be on reducing consumption and re-using already manufactured resources. There is a huge disconnect between scalability and these experimental programs.

I agree. Though the problem with reducing consumption, making products more recyclable, or even degrowth in order to stave of environmental collapse is that there is of course no financial incentive to do so. It is antithetical to the current economic world order. While some of these companies have promise, they all focus on waste; they all focus on the result of a wasteful system and not on the system itself. While it should be their principle to focus on the true source of waste and it’s environmental effect, that is something which-even if they had sufficient financial interest to do- could not actually do anything about. This is something that requires collective action.

It’s a simple supply and demand thing, people want/need plastic goods, forks, straws etc so these companies make and supply them. If that demand stops or reduces, the company will have to do the same. It starts with people leading more sustainable lives that will force these companies to change their manufacturing processes and materials to be more sustainable. If there’s zero demand or a reduction in demand, companies will have to stop or reduce making plastic products in order to remain a profitable business.

I would love to have the thongs (maybe an old fashion term ?) but I am 73 yrs old with a hip replacement and I need a shoe with an upper part, and no back. I am sure the material like leather that was shown earlier would do the trick. I also loved the packaging that was also shown that you can tear up and plant for flowers. That product should sell for any packaging except some food ones lol. This video should be shown in school classrooms or made more attractive to watch for kids. i'm actually very disgusted of this practice, especially "baking" the sticks in order to kill bacteria. Don't forget these sticks contain food remains and people saliva and god knows what could come out of a persons mouth and hands. And I dont see the good part in it, for what are they doing this? To save trees? come on, i bet there are more appropriate means to do this instead of handling germs, saliva, and cooking them alltogether. I'm stunned how they don't seem worried at all about corona up there in Canada ))

It's amazing we put so much of protecting the environment on the consumer and none on the corporation. This was the only one which I thought was the most controversial since algae are living organisms. So we’re basically killing the living organisms that small sea life feed on to create a product that would otherwise end up in the small and big sea life environment. The pro’s to this is that they’re farming the algae they could never extract it from the sea since it’s too small. This leaving the sea habitat unbothered. The cons is that there’s a carbon foot print to farm the algae.

Not necessarily. If a business is constantly sold out because it didn't produce enough, it leads to a reduction in business over the long term. Consumers tend to spend less time in an understocked shop/bakery than they do in a fully stocked one. It is a hard balance to reach and ultimately will produce waste based on common consumer habits. We could change the habits in time, but until then the waste needs a way to be used.

@@laurent3415 good point. In my country, we call this "hungry eye phenomenon", where we decide to take a product out of large bundle instead that one that's sitting alone on the shelf. But on the other hand, in our culture, bread was never wasted. Bread crumbs are one of the most common products, sold by bakeries, supermarkets, small grocery stores etc. We also make them at home by simply drying pieces of bread and grinding them in a food processor, blender or in a simple pestle and mortar.

I’ve worked in the restaurant/bar business in the US for 23+ years. Lauren T is absolutely right. We work on a par system, but if we have 40 steaks and 41 guests that want a steak, that 41st guest complains to us and their social circle, they get something free in return, and the odds that any of those people come back when they can go next door is hugely decreased. It’s a constant balancing act. You know Americans; better to have more than you need and throw the extra away than to ever have less.

Our local bakery routinely cuts unsold, bread into cubes or crumbs, for resale. I do that with my own bread. I put the cubes into buttered bakeware, along with any appropriate 'leftovers' & herbs, pour well blended eggs, and topping of grated cheese, and it becomes a dish called a Wifesaver. It can be frozen or stored 4 days in the fridge. Delicious.

Why do you need chopsticks . It’s just a bloody status thing to show everyone in an Asian restaurant that westerners know how to use chopsticks pffft . . I’m 73 years old and I eat Chinese food with a spoon and fork . Leave the chopsticks to the Asian people and do something to save our planet.

My hats off to the people involved in UPCYCLING the used chopstick ! I, myself UPCYCLE, I make round padded chairs that swivel from used tires and I use bicycle tire painted and decorated with a mirror in the center for a wall mirror.

so recycled chopstick furniture is comparable to genuine hard wood furniture, 3-4x the price of IKEA furniture. This is where recycling just gets ignored, it's necessary but the masses won't pay more for reused products. It just won't happen.

Plastic spoons and forks might be uselss in my opinion I mean we have metal ones we can reuse over and over again But since we humans are lazy we made plastic ones that are convenient for use as with all other things There are metal chopsticks as well

And the plastic forks or spoons often are not able to pick up a bite of food with. Knives seem clumsy and cannot cut a piece of meat. Fork tines snap off on hard plastic ware and the softer ones bend double. 🤔 A complete waste. So much real silverware available in thrift stores.

the chopstick recycling is great cause it gives a short-lived item a long-lived use. tables and floors tend to be around for a decade if not multiple. i hope this can scale because with the mass of chopsticks waste mentioned, they could supplement at least a small portion of wood. also huge credit to Bottletop for not just stealing a South American idea but rather build up a community by employing them right there and paying a fair wage. that's how aid is done right.
