The "molds" seen here are made of steel by machinists using saws, vertical milling machines, drill presses, grinders, many other metal fabricating tools and techniques including EDM. This all comes under the general heading of "tool and die." Most decent sized manufacturing plants have at least one or possibly an entire team of machinists who build whatever customized "tools" or "dies" are needed to fabricate various materials into whatever shape the customer needs. Some of the tools/dies used in this video are operated manually, while some of the cylinders/pistons can be operated by pneumatic(air) pressure or hydraulic(oil) pressure. I'm not sure if there is a specific term or name that could be used to describe these machines, they are highly specialized. Many times a specific tool or die may be used to manually produce a sample or prototype for a customer. Later it can be upgraded, modified or even automated to speed up the production process.

Why are americans always so stubbornly patriotic? By manufacturing them in China they could have higher quality and quantity thus giving them more profit and reducing expenditure? There's a reason why 98% of products in the world are manufactured in China rather than the us...
@Luisa-mu9yw5 жыл бұрын
That's true, but there's an ethical argument to be made. You boost the US economy by providing work (and paying reasonable wages, ideally) and you can control factory safety as well as making sure production is as ecological as possible. Provided these things are important to you, of course. Besides assuming that the CEO tries to do what he feels is right, it's just also a great selling point: 'made in the US' sounds good. So PR could also be a concern. Of course the plain old 'more profit' often wins out, but I don't think it's pure patriotism.

No, from another video Ann Clark outcompetes China coming and going. Their Chinese competitors take 3-4 months to come out with a new shape, Ann Clark takes as little as 2 days. And Ben Clark has made production cost-competitive with China when you factor in shipping, so there's really no reason not to buy American in this case. He tells a story where their biggest competitor pre-announced a Llama shape via email, and then Ann Clark designed, tooled, produced, and shipped two Llama shapes to all their retail stores and Amazon in 10 days. They cornered the market before their competitor even had them on a boat.
