For centuries, Koreans have been using onggi to store and ferment foods. Jin-gyu Heo is the youngest of the 20 remaining master potters who make these earthenware pots. We visited Jin-gyu's workshop, in Ulsan, South Korea, to see how this ancient craft is Still Standing.

I lived in Korea about 10 years and it was so common to see these outside houses and temples. The problem is that so many people in Korea now live in apartment highrises... hard to have an onggi there. But still, I didn't imagine that the craft was so limited; there was such pride for onggi and I even once saw a video about how amazingly perfect the breathability of the clay is for fermentation and protection. I always imagined that if I ended up buying a house in Korea I would definitely keep a few onggi outside ^^ Still hope to someday ~ Thanks for this video, well done!

@@alejandraflores4601 Just stop. It's completely unfair and selfish to spam religious text everywhere when its completely unwarranted (and no, its not warranted: I've already heard the excuses similar to "God is always relevant"). It's one thing if someone is having a hard time and you send them prayers, or the topic is about religion or God, but just spamming it in replies simply to force others to deal with it is wrong. Keep it to yourself. It's especially egregious when half of you start the reply with "REPENT". We've all had to endure eons of religious (mainly Christianity) propaganda and speech being part of our lives completely for so long, especially when it wasn't welcomed to that extent. Just let us all live and enjoy what we choose to without being forced to bump into this type of thing constantly. There's a very thin line between "free speech" and being proud, and spamming your beliefs inappropriately.

Seems like Mr. Jin-Gyu Heo should get some sort of "Master Craftsman" designation from the Korean government. It would've been nice if the video covered how the pots can and are being used in modern times, like they did with the Zellige Tiles episode. Maybe highlight how restaurants or home cooks are using them in traditional or innovate ways/recipes.

@@repentandbelieveinjesuschr9495 why is it that you keep responding to everybody's comment with this overbearance of putting your personal belief which is fine I just want to know why.? @@monie2514 I don't know what they said since it's been removed, but I've noticed a HUGE uptick in religious harrassment and spamming lately. I'm perfectly fine with people expressing their beliefs respectfully, but these comments are being spammed under every reply and are generally along the lines of "REPENT JESUS LOVES YOU REPENT", in its mildest form. Sometimes it is a whole lot darkness akin to fear-mongering with threats of going to Hell and stuff. I'm honestly fed up with all of it. People have had to deal with Christian beliefs (for the majority, it's been that in a lot of countries for centuries now) being the mainstay and little tolerance for anything else. A lot of people want to have experiences online separate from religion. I just find it insulting when people are throwing comments around like that unprovoked. I wish they'd stop. A "God Bless You" or "I'll pray for you" if someone's sick is totally find and has wholesome emotional basis usually. Religious propaganda splattered everywhere, hoping it'll find a mark somewhere isn't. I am curious what exactly they said, though....

I get wanting to keep the process the same but is changing to a modern kiln really that big of a deal. 50% of pots breaking is hard to understand when it could be reduced to 25% or less and not require to be constantly monitored for 5 days. Same with the glazes, those traditional glazes are cool but only earth colors, I feel like most would want bright colors. Still, it a really cool that they are keeping the tradition alive.
@slalomie
@slalomie 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I thought I heard them say 1 in 5 break, which is still a lot, but a 50% failure rate is bad and uneconomical for just how much time and effort is put into these handmade pieces. Firing them in a kiln for 5 days sounds like a lot too. I think they can modernize some of the processes to be more efficient without sacrificing quality.

@@dwjunior MasterVZ has a point. His reply sums up the answer behind the question, or rather the sentiment. It's not lacking in intelligence but a succint answer relayed in sarcasm. If you're given an option between riding a horse and carriage or a car, which will you prefer? There is a reason why the "old ways" gets forgotten or chosen over: cheaper and easier procurable solutions are available. By your logic, you should also bewail people 200 years ago for eschewing homemade clay pots for cheap cast iron pots. Or complain to people 300 years ago for patronizing mass-produced cotton cloth over furs...

Using plastic containers have been reported to be unhealthy, I'm sure like all things this onggi will be an must have necessity health conscious faze..et once researchers report on its health benefits. For me practical wise I'm interested to see if there's a mini version (for smaller households)

thats actually crazy to me. im mexican and we use clay everything bc the flavor comes out so different when you use clay......why would you switch to using plastic or glass to ferment when you can buy a pot that youll use forever and get a way better taste? thats actually insane to me. why in the world would you switch to plastic or glass to ferment? espECIALLY plastic that is full of god knows what....his cheapest pot is $80. just spend the money for a better taste and a more traditional taste AND process. I couldnt imagine skipping steps while making tamales that is an ancient process lol its gotta be done the exact same way. its who we are. and its the taste of our ancestors.
