One of the biggest regrets in my life was not taking advantage of an opportunity provided to me while in basic training to go to a year prep school, then attend west point. Throughout my time in service, every west point officer I met was top notch. Everything came together for me after serving. The GL Bill paid for my college education at UT Austin, which I loved, I bleed burnt orange. But for me, and who I am, west point would have been a better fit.

Back in 1985 i joined the Army as a 19E. ONSUT at Ft Knox and then off to Ft Stewart, GA for my first duty station. I was there about 2 months when I got a letter through the unit ordering me to attend a meeting on post. It was a meeting about attending the West Point Prepatory School, at the time in Ft Monmouth, NJ. I kick myself for not completing the paperwork and see if I could gain acceptance to West Point. At the time I believe I was identified due to my high ASFAB score. If I could go back to my 18 year old self, I'd impress upon him how beneficial West Point could be in a future he could not possibly imagine.

At that point in the video, they were learning drill and ceremonies (basic marching commands). When in formation and following drill commands, you don’t do whatever you want. You listen for the preparatory command and then get ready for the command of execution to do whatever facing movement is ordered.
@mickbourne30282 жыл бұрын
@@sherbaum1985 just rewatched, looked liked what you said was true, but If I heard that and it resonated with me at this distance, what impact would it have with a new cadet, the rebuke or order we were given was “Do not anticipate the word of command!” Initiative is required at all levels of command, “A field marshal’s baton in every knapsack” indeed from my Corps during the First World War there was a lance corporal acting as Company Sergeant Major during a particularly heavy engagement
@jacobhaft97142 жыл бұрын
@@mickbourne3028 I mean the guy said "Wait for (all or the whole?) commands without doing things on initiative" which isn't really the same as what you said. I believe he's saying make sure you have all the information, and act according to that information instead of acting upon misunderstandings or incomplete orders. We are obviously both missing some important context to the situation, but what I assume happened, is he gave part of an order like "Put on your camelbacks and pick up....", some cadets started acting upon those orders preemptively by putting on their camelbacks, and he's saying "Wait for all commands without doing things on your own initiative", meaning wait for me to finish my mf sentence lmao. Plus, the cadets in the video were brand brand new, so taking orders and ingesting all of the information, an important aspect of life in the military, may be something that they've never learned. Also, these instructors are also cadets, so they obviously get some training in initiative throughout the process.

Brett Biederman Counter argument, The Military isn’t really for people who roll their eyes at authority and think they are better than others.
@ourtube42665 жыл бұрын
DooBick I didn’t necessarily say I was better than these guys. I can see why you might think that but I should stress that I did almost the exact same thing through basic training, so I’m not in a position to assume superiority. In fact, I don’t even think that the initial “basic training” environment is a bad thing since it gives every soldier something in common and standardized the way we communicate/work on certain tasks. My main point is that forcecomm emphasized how I need to think for myself and get out of the by the book mentality thus the way I’ve been conditioned in the actual military is in direct opposition to the very first lessons everybody coming off the streets who puts on that uniform learns. Hopefully that makes sense, I’m not making fun of these young soldiers just thinking back on my own experience with a little irony.

Brett Biederman....NO, the only reason you wouldn't make it to West Point is probably due to the fact your grades aren't 4.0 and you can't 'handle discipline. Most of you "mama's" boys are brought up to think you should never be punished and use your ridiculous attitude to give your teachers in school a lot of grief. Most people like you think you can disobey the law.....it's sick. You think you're entitled, although in a different way.

The haircut, the uniform, the drills etc. are all a part of stripping you of any individuality. The military is all about teamwork and your first lesson is that everyone is equally worthless. I can’t relate to this video since I never joined the military. But my husband is going through his Army retirement process now after serving 23 years, 20 of that active duty. He’ll be drawing his military pension, VA benefits, and another income from law enforcement all at age 41. Sometimes I joke with him that I should have should joined the military myself bc I could be drawing retirement myself at such a young age and still have a second career. But you know, a lot of them didn’t come back home from war and a lot more came home without their limbs. My husband is one of the lucky ones who came home alive but he’s drilling it into our two sons’ heads to never join the military.

I was drafted in August 1968. At the start of basic training after testing six of us were brought to a movie theater on base to watch an army film on the West Point Preparatory Academy. We were being offered the opportunity to attend. After attending the Preparatory Academy for a year you received an appointment to West Point. I indicated that I was interested in attending. I think I was the only one of the six. I was very excited until a couple of days later I was told that I was ineligible because I would be beyond the maximum age allowed (25) at graduation from West Point. Very disappointed. Why didn't they check my age before showing me the film? Anyway I attended Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning and was commissioned much sooner (August 1969) than I would have bee had I attended the academy.
