After WWII, Europe was in shambles and Europeans were almost completely dependent on Americans and their economy. In this situation, a German man named Franz Josef Strauss had a dream: to reclaim the skies with a new airline born of cooperation between European countries. His passion for aviation led him to the foundation of Airbus, one of the most famous and versatile airliner manufacturers of present times. But in the beginning, Airbus had to fight against the fiercest competitor on the market, convince airlines that its products were both safe and efficient, and find ways to turn dreams into reality.

Hardly responsible environmentally. They’ve been part of the fossil fuel based aviation industry emitting vast quantities of greenhouse gases and pollutants and noise disturbance and are only recently dabbling in alternative propulsion at a time we have essentially reached well over 1C (possibly 1.4C) of global heating. They’re also responsible for promoting air travel in general. Everything the business does involves environmental degradation and is purely driven by the pursuit of monetary gain and sales of combustion vehicles

This is one of the many stories about Airbus birth. Another one is, following the Concorde cooperation between the UK and France (technically very successful but commercially a failure), a few European government tried to create Airbus (Germany, France and the UK).

When one has zero knowledge about Airbus and Europe History, this altenative narrative presents FJ Strauss as the founder, inventor, god of Airbus! FJ Strauss was a fierce and successfull politician who deserves recognition, alright. But but but but... Airbus is a Franco-German-British invention where France and Germany have played an enormous role, and continue to do so. Shadowing the merit of French, German and British engineering, as well as Sud-Aviation, British Aircraft, Dornier, Dassault, Aérospatiale, to name the biggest, and presenting Strauss as he is presented here is a... joke.

Interesting story: Strauß was a hobby pilot and when he had the chance to visit moscow during the cold war, he flew himself to moscow in a plane and landed on a snowy runway, almost with no fuel left. Then he was asked by a russian official if that had been his first time flying to russia and he replied, no but the first time I only got to Stalingrad

The story told above is far from reality. Initially Airbus was planned as a 50 pct/50pct project between the French and the British who both had built airliners during the 50 and 60' and that included the supersonic Concorde, in the 60' Germany had no experience in the manufacturing of Jet airliners... only ambitions. The Germans came into play when the British decided they could not afford the project, that is when the Germans were invited to replace the British who took a smaller role in the venture. Franz Strauss was a politician and acted as a lobbyist and as such aimed to get Germany to replace Britain as a key partner of the French in the Airbus project, Strauss was not a founder of Airbus, he only joined Airbus as a chairman in 1980, Airbus had started in 1970. The first Airbus the A300 came in 1972, meaning long before Strauss actively joined the company. The first men in charge of Aibus were the Frenchmen Henri Zielgler and Roger Béteille, both aerospace engineers...

True, but without German involvement, Airbus could not compete with Boeing, because many British aircrafts were not successful before, France produced only three - Caravelle and Mercure and Concorde with the British. Caravelle had a British front part and engines and Mecure a lot of parts from other European countries, but was on market unlike the Caravelle very unsuccessful. Only the later Germany presence in the group led to success finally.

You forget to mentiion France had the caravelle before Airbus and the Concorde with the Brits. Airbus was created along with the european integration. 63 Billions Euros revenues in 2023 not you state. Do your homework.
